How is the travel industry changing with consumer behaviour?

Most travel purchasing flows simply start with a Google search. The user types in “cheap flights Bangkok,” for example. The search results will show many travel search engines like Agoda, Kayak, Expedia, etc, where the user can do some reference pricing. Usually the purchase intent is very explicit so it makes sense that travel companies spend most of their customer acquisition dollars on search engine marketing. Once on a travel site, the customer selects their target destination, inputs the date parameters, then browses the search results to see if any are attractive. Simple, right?

A new focus on WHO you know, not WHERE you are going

Recently, travel decisions have become more influenced by social networks than search engines. According to a recent Forbes article, “recent studies reveal that what matters most when planning a trip is not where you’re going, but rather who you know that has already traveled to that destination.”

And according to a 2011 poll featured on UK-based flight comparison site Skyscanner.com, 52 percent of Facebook users stated that seeing friends’ vacation pictures inspired them to book a trip to that particular place.

The shift to social

What does this mean for travel brands? Among other things, it means that it’s time to shift marketing budget from Google to Facebook. If your potential customers are browsing their friend’s travel photos on Facebook (or Instagram), you want to be right there to offer them a deal on their next trip.

TravelAdvisor is probably the best example of a travel company that is “social by design.” After running extensive paid media and sponsored stories to amplify organic distribution of it’s “Cities I’ve visited” app, TravelAdvisor experienced seven times increase in daily installs from the paid campaign and organic growth from the app’s timeline implementation, two times sustained increase in the number of daily active users after the campaign.

According to Adam Medros, VP Global Product for TripAdvisor, “The integration with timeline enabled us to greatly increase the number of installs and active users for Cities I’ve Visited. By using targeted ads and sponsored stories to drive to the app, those numbers increased even more dramatically. As we ramped up our use of sponsored stories and got more penetration in a particular market, we found that the addressable social audience grew significantly making it easier to increase our reach.”

Green tech startup SynapSense helps Equinix save US$1.3M in annual datacenter energy costs

Energy optimization technologies implemented by Equinix and green tech startup SynapSense have resulted in an annual savings of S$1.7 million from datacenter cooling facilities.

Cloud computing may be the buzzword that enterprises and startup companies are talking about. But what really powers your cloud computing initiatives are the infrastructure run by the likes of Platform Equinix, with their server clusters and data centers. One big concern here, of course, is energy use, which is why cloud service and data center providers are trying to reduce their energy costs.

In Singapore, Equinix reports to have saved S$1.7 million (US$1.3 million) annually from savings of more than 8 million kilowatt hours. This has been done in partnership with SynapSense, which did a six-month datacenter cooling efficiency study with Equinix starting 2012, after the two companies were chosen by the Singapore Infocomm Development Authority as the winners of the Green Data Center Innovation Challenge last summer.

Equinix implemented SynapSense’s Data Center Optimization Platform in its SG1 Cooling Energy Efficiency Project. In particular, this involved using real-time environmental monitoring and active control, in order to optimize the energy needed to cool datacenter facilities.

This is the hard truth – fewer than 13 percent of Harvard’s graduates want to work in a startup. Needless to say, this figure would be even smaller in Asia.

Having once been part of that 87 percent and having worked at a number of multinationals, I can honestly tell you that it’s not for everyone. It certainly wasn’t for me.

Change comes slow in an organisation with more than 10,000 people. Most of your job revolves around processes handed down from predecessors, and innovation is limited to that of the research department. All that talk about intrapreneurs – they’re unicorns; it’s just not happening. Of course, this isn’t reflective of all firms.

Today, I still dream of being called a Googler, but I can assure you that the vast majority of corporate life will reflect my previous experience.

With that, let me share with you the three greatest benefits of working in a startup. I reference Dan Pink’s thoughts here in describing our startup experience.

1. Autonomy

I cannot stress how amazing freedom is. As Start Now moved from just two co-founders to a team of seven brilliant individuals today, we still maintain the same culture of autonomy. There is no formal work time, no strict dress code, no need to fill MCs, and what not. In fact, one of my colleagues is remotely working in Tanzania, Africa, right now as she explores the vast African savannah.

今でもGoogler（Google社員）と呼ばれることを夢見ているが、私はほとんどの会社生活が私の以前の経験と同じようなものだろうと確信を持っていうことができる。

This is a very important benefit of working in a startup. It’s not about having more time to run personal errands, or the privilege of shopping on an empty Orchard Road, but more about tailoring working hours to our own predisposition.

Our development team is the most efficient between midnight and 8am, while I wake up early without fail to clear my emails. Often, we are more productive on a Sunday afternoon than a Monday morning. Say goodbye to Monday blues for us!

We've seen predictions for an Apple HDTV and a revamped Apple TV experience come and go over the last couple of years. Analysts have predicted several times since as far back as 2011 that we’d see Apple introduce its own full-fledged TV set by the end of the year, and the most vocal analyst, Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster, was still calling for a full HDTV by the end of the year with an innovative new remote control last we checked in. Today, in a note that sounds like it should have been scheduled for an April 1 release, another analyst has backed Munster’s claims that Apple will launch a full TV set (not a set-top box) in the second half of 2013.

Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White issued a note to clients today, following checks with supply chain sources in Asia (via BGR), claiming Apple’s “iTV” project will launch this year in 50- to 60-inch variants and come with a ring-shaped motion controller dubbed, get this, “iRing”:

The “iTV” ecosystem represents a major innovation for the $100 billion LCD TV industry that will revolutionize the TV experience forever, in our view. First of all, we believe “iTV” will be 60-inches in size (but could also include 50-55 inch options).

Secondly, we believe Apple will release a miniature device called “iRing” that will be placed on a user’s finger and act as a navigation pointer for “iTV”, enhancing the motion detection experience and negating some of the functionality found in a remote.

White continued by saying Apple will include a “mini iTV” with iTV that will allow users to have a second-screen experience on a smaller, iPad-sized display:

An Apple spokeswoman declined to comment. The Wall Street Journal earlier reported that the company was working on a less expensive iPhone that could go on sale as soon as this year. Analysts have said they expect Apple to launch its next iPhone around the summer.

The two devices reflect new pressures on Apple. The Cupertino, Calif., company has long commanded unique premiums for the iPhone, but consumer demand for cheaper products is spiking. A flood of smartphone entrants and the rise of Samsung Electronics Co. 005930.SE -0.99% have commoditized the market, squeezing margins and dividing profits among an array of devices.

"There isn't really any major differentiator between the players at this phase," said Neil Mawston, an analyst at research firm Strategy Analytics. He said to cope, Apple needs to take a page from Samsung and launch more products faster.

"The panacea is to transform the industry with a revolutionary design," Mr. Mawston said. Until then "you have to do the traditional business school implementations like manage costs and move quicker than rivals."

How the innards of the next iPhone may differ from the iPhone 5, which went on sale last September, remains unclear. Apple often upgrades the processor and other components like the camera between models. Apple is also expected to ship the next version of its iOS mobile operating system around midyear, other people familiar with the matter have said.

Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook has repeatedly declined to comment on Apple's plans for a cheaper device. But he and other executives have been fighting to protect Apple's premium image. At an investor conference in February, he said Apple "wouldn't do anything that we consider not a great product."

Key questions to ask: investment at what value and at what percentage (so you need to know how to value your business); WHY does this guy want to invest in you/your business; ask yourself are you comfortable with the answers you get and if there are any uncomfortable feelings u may have. There are times you may just have to trust your instincts and gut feelings.

According to John Neal, co-founder of Beacon, Jooix possessed strong margins and significant quarterly revenue despite having no marketing spend.

Beacon will be helping Jooix with its upcoming marketing campaign, which includes pop-up stores and digital marketing. The startup hopes to expand across borders and gain customers in Malaysia, Indonesia and Thailand.

While the market is certainly big enough to accommodate more than one player, it could mean that the potential growth of these smaller competitors would be affected.
