This is MOL AccessPortal’s second major acquisition in the month. Earlier last week, it acquired a majority stake in Turkey’s Game Sultan and PaytoGo and planned to use the opportunity to get into Europe, the Middle East and North Africa.

Website eMarketer confirms this trend in travel, as their Social is the New Normal for Travel Marketers report provides charts that validate the deep connection between travel and social. The study showed that 65 percent of travel brands said they were increasing their social media marketing spend for 2012.

Naturally, travel decisions are often driven by search queries, but we’re seeing a fundamental shift towards social as travel brands start to focus on the power of referrals on social networks.

Canva is currently building an online platform that lets anyone create professional quality designs easily in a collaborate manner.

This is the second startup that co-founders Melanie Perkins and Cliff Obrecht are involved in together. Their first was a online yearbook design product called Fusion Books which was started in 2007. Cameron Adams, a former lead designer at Google, has joined Canva as co-founder and Head of Product.

The relatively huge seed round indicates that Canva’s investors are extremely confident in the team and its vision. “Design is moving into a more collaborative and social world, and I predict Canva will be leading the way,” said Lars Rasmussen.

Rick Baker of Blackbird Ventures thinks this startup is proof that Aussie companies can think global from day one.

“The desktop design industry is ripe for disruption and the Canva team are the best people for the job,” he added.

Vietnam’s Microchip Industry Keeps Getting Bigger

If you know anything about the beginning of Silicon Valley, you know that it all started with a group of men called the Traitorous Eight, who worked in a company called Fairchild Semiconductor. They were pioneers in chip manufacturing and laid the foundation for the most productive tech valley in the world. Chips are still one of the most important areas in technology, they are in every computer device on the planet and it’s a highly competitive field with the likes of Intel, AMD, Texas Instruments, Toshiba, Samsung, Qualcomm, and lots more competing. Which chip is going into the latest iPhone, HTC, or Samsung phone is headline news.

シリコンバレーの始まりについて何か知っているなら、すべてはFairchild Semiconductorという会社で働いていたthe Traitorous Eightと呼ばれる男から始まったことを知っているはずだ。彼らはチップ製造のパイオニアで、世界で最も生産性の高いテクノロジーの渓谷の基礎を築いた。チップはテクノロジー分野の中で最も重要なものの一つだ。世界中のすべてのコンピューター装置に使われおり、その分野ではIntel、AMD、Texas Instruments、東芝、Samsung、Qualcomm、その他大多くの企業が激しい競争を繰り広げている。どのチップが最新のiPhoneあるいはHTCや Samsung製の携帯電話に使われるかが重大ニュースになる。

Undaunted, Vietnam is entering the fray. Or at least, taking chip manufacturing into its own hands. Just last week saw the formation of the Ho Chi Minh Semiconductor Industry Association. It brings together industry leaders, universities, and companies to facilitate the learning, research, and production of semiconductors in Ho Chi Minh city. This means money is being funneled into connecting the dots, building more factories, and looking long-term at chip manufacturing in Vietnam. Although it’s an industry that takes a decade to build up, the money is already pouring in.

ひるむことなくベトナムはこの競争が激しい分野に参入しようとしている。少なくともチップ製造を自分の手で行おうとしている。ちょうど先週、Ho Chi Minh Semiconductor Industry Association（ホーチミン半導体産業協会）が結成された。これは業界のリーダー、大学、企業をまとめ、ホーチミン市での半導体の技術の習得、研究、製造を推進するためのものだ。これが意味するのは、全体計画を策定するために資金がつぎ込まれ、設備が建設され、ベトナムでのチップ製造を長期的な視点で見つめるということだ。半導体産業を築きあげるためには10年を要するが、資金はすでに流れ込んでいる。

This is big. After all, in 2012 alone, Vietnam earned US$16 billion through exporting electronics. That’s a 91 percent jump from the year before. I wrote about this in January, highlighting how Vietnam’s electronics manufacturing is getting really serious.

So the electronics sector is already hugely profitable in Vietnam, but what does this association spell for the future? It means we’ve got cross-institutional involvement in microchip manufacturing. And when you’ve got the government on board, processes get streamlined, land is opened up, and bureaucracy is potentially reduced.

これは重要なことだ。なにしろ2012年だけでもベトナムは電子機器の輸出で1600億ドルを獲得している。これは前年比91％の大幅な伸びだ。これについては1月に書いた記事でいかにベトナムが電子機器の製造に真剣に取り組んでいるかを浮き彫りにした。

Now if this kind of support could also trickle down into domestic software startups that work in local and global markets, we’d be looking at a really different Vietnam. But I doubt that’s coming anytime soon.

Visitors to AIME were able to select their education programme highlights via the mobile app launched for this year’s show, a feature that also allowed them to browse through a detailed list of full show events, view their appointment diaries and even demonstrate how to navigate the show floor.

Making this app even more useful was yet another first for 2013, with visitors able to line up pre scheduled appointments with their preferences from the more than 800 exhibitors through new ‘Visitor Appointment Diaries’, previously reserved only for hosted buyers. This offered greater visitor time RoI and the ability for exhibitors to also maximise their own participation.

An Experiment in HTML5 Gaming Inside WeChat

We get the feeling that the hugely popular messaging app WeChat will eventually move into social gaming. (We asked earlier this afternoon but a Tencent rep declined to comment). Until then, the closest we have is this fun experiment in HTML5 gaming from a startup game studio called DuoPao. Basically, DuoPao has opened up a regular brand account on WeChat and is using it to let followers access and play a wide variety of HTML5 games – right inside WeChat.

Yesterday marked the end of HelpLearn.Asia’s event. One of the topics that got me sitting up was crowdfunding – a relatively new concept in Asia – that Daryl Arnold of Newton Circus (not the hawker centre in Singapore) shed some light on.

Hear ye, all you who are interested in raising capital but are sick of trying to convince the rich people to invest in your idea. Try tapping into the masses instead. Besides raising money, crowdfunding also serves a marketing purpose. It’s another way of getting the word out on your idea and to test your concept.

Restaurant Booking Site Chope Raises $2.5 Million Led By Singapore Press Holdings

Singapore’s restaurant booking site, Chope, has concluded a US$2.5 million round led by Singapore Press Holdings (h/t TechCrunch). Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) now owns 27.87 percent (pdf) of Chope, having invested S$1.81 million ($1.45 million).

I called Arrif Ziaudeen, the CEO and founder of Chope, who said that there are two other “prominent investors” involved in this funding round who he can’t disclose for now. When asked about why SPH has decided to invest, Arrif told me:

SPH believes in the Chope team and want to grow the business. They are investing in us to grow Chope and we definitely hope to work with their food media arm.

In Singapore, Chope competes with HungryGoWhere (acquired by SingTel) on the restaurant booking front. Last month, HungryGoWhere claimed to be “Singapore’s leading restaurant reservations service” with over 15,000 restaurants listed. The HungryGoWhere site also has 100,000 food reviews with over 1.1 million unique visitors per month.

Chope has over 224 restaurants listed on its Singapore and Hong Kong sites. Arrif revealed that 10,000 diners book their restaurants through Chope each week. In July last year, Chope served over one million dinners.

HungryGoWhere was previously more like a Yelp (restaurant reviews) for Singapore and thus its restaurant listing number is definitely higher. On the other hand, Chope’s 224 restaurants, are actual paying customers.

HungryGoWhereはシンガポールのYelp（レストランレビューサイト）のような存在であった。このため掲載されているレストラン数は当然多い。一方、Chopeに掲載されている24のレストランは実際に利用料金を支払っている。

Arrif told me that healthy competition is good; he believes it is still early and there are a lot more restaurants for both HungryGoWhere and Chope to approach. Chope is definitely looking at expanding to a third city with a good food culture but declined to name a specific target. I have also heard that HungryGoWhere is looking to expand outside of Singapore very soon. Expect a land grabbing competition going on in years to come.
