Kakaotalk app gets a makeover on Android, updated to v4.0

Popular chat app Kakaotalk has been updated to v4.0 on Android today, bringing with it a makeover that refreshes the interface.

There are no major new features in the update, but the revamp gives the Android version of Kakaotalk a fresh look thats a bit more minimal, a tad more ‘flat’, and more in line with how apps should look on Android 4.0+ (the OS, I mean). Which is a good thing. The app didn’t look too good before (the same can be said of Line and WeChat on Android), so it’s a welcome makeover. Here’s a comparison of the old vs new look:

今日、人気チャットアプリKakaotalkのAndroid版がv4.0にアップデートされインターフェースが刷新された。

今回のアップデートでは主要な新機能は追加されていないが、Android版Kakaotalkのデザインが新しくなった。新デザインは以前よりもいくらかミニマルでよりフラットなものとなっておりAndroid OS 4.0以降に則したデザインといえるだろう。これはいいことだ。以前のアプリは見栄えはあまり良いものではなかったので（同じことはAndroid版のLineやWeChatにも言える）、変更はかんげいである。新旧デザインの比較がこれだ。

The KakaoTalk team says it wanted to focus on the UI/UX and overall branding in this v4.0 update, which will also come to iOS later this year. On Android, some previously obscure menu items accessed through the Android hard key buttons have been moved to the screen area in v4.0, and the ‘find friends’ function similarly has its options – eg: add via QR code scanning – more clearly laid out. In another small refresh, voice chatrooms now feature a collage (pictured top) of up to four of the participating friends.

KakaoTalkのチームによると、今回のv4.0へのアップデートではUI/UXおよび総合的なブランド化に主眼をおいたという。これは今年中にiOSにも適用される予定だ。Android版では、これまで隠れていたためAndroidのハードキーボタンによりアクセスしていたメニューアイテムがv4.0ではスクリーンエリアに移動された。また「友達を見つける」機能でも同様によりオプションがわかりやすく配置されている（例えは、QRコード読み取り）。もう一つの小さな変更は、音声チャットルームに参加している友達のコラージュ（最大4人）が表示されるようになったことだ（上の図）。

KakaoTalk soared past 100 million registered users this summer, and is also expanding its presence outside of South Korea, especially in Southeast Asian nations like Indonesia and the Philippines.

The revamped Kakaotalk Android app is already in the Google Play store.

KakaoTalkは登録ユーザー数が急増しこの夏に1億人を超えた。また韓国以外、特にインドネシアやフィリピンのような東南アジアの国々での存在感を高めている。

Uber announced Series C financing from Google Ventures, Texas Pacific Group and Benchmark in late August at a valuation of $3.5 billion. It currently operates in 41 cities globally, with three cities in Asia, namely, Singapore, Taipei and Seoul.

Uber’s primary competition in China is local rivals of Yongche and Zuche, which have already established their presence across China.

More than a few people, however, believe it’s a niche market. In Ling’s article he cited a research that shows 5% of the total population is homosexual. So that’s 70 million in China’s case — not a small number by any means. But what a percentage of those people would admit they are of LGBT groups is a question. After three years, Zank’s online community has more than 300 thousand users.

Zank’s app functions like Momo, a social app for strangers, that has location-based features for users to find and interact with people with similar interests. Momo claimed it had had 50 million registered users two years after its launch.

When it comes to monetization, Zank plans to charge premium features, sell goods loved by this group of people or organize offline events that will be sponsored by brands — no difference from other social services.

Canva, a web app that wants to make graphic design super easy, launches today

The creative industry is undergoing a revolution of sorts as startups are creating all kinds of apps that democratize what once were exclusive and expensive tools of the trade.

Instagram, which lets users apply all kinds of photo filters at a press of a button, is just the beginning. There’s Narrative Science, which crafts grammar-perfect articles from data; Knack, which lets users create web apps without needing to code, and Piktochart, which simplifies the creation of infographics.

クリエイティブ業界では一種の革命が進行中だ。多くのスタートアップがあらゆ種類のアプリを開発し、高価だった業界向け専用ツールが一般の人々にも手の届くものとなっている。

Instagramによりユーザーは、あらゆる種類のフォトフィルターをボタンを一度押すだけで適用することができる。Narrative Scienceは、データから文法的に完璧な記事を作成してくれるし、Knackを使えばコーディングすることなしにウェブアプリを作ることができる。また、Piktochartを使えば簡単にインフォグラフィックが作成できる。

But for straight-up graphic design, there aren’t a lot of tools out there with the democratizing potential of Instagram.

Canva is a candidate. Launched for users in United States and Australia that are on the waiting list, the web app aims to make graphic design dead simple. While Photoshop is expensive, complicated, and has a steep learning curve, Canva is supposed to be free, simple, and easy to learn.

It is created by an Australian startup of the same name. Back in March, it announced a USD 3M fundraising round involving prominent Australian and US investors like Matrix Partners, InterWest Partners, 500 Startups, Facebook’s director of engineering Lars Rasmussen, and Yahoo! CFO Ken Goldman.

しかし、本格的なグラフィックデザインのための、Instagramのように広く使われる可能性を秘めた一般向けのツールはあまり多くはない。

グラフィックのデザインを極めて容易に行えるようにするためのウェブアプリであるCanvaはその候補の一つで米国およびオーストラリアのウェイティングリストに登録されているユーザー向けにローンチされた。Photoshopは高価で複雑だ、また修得するのも難しいが、Canvaは無料でシンプル、簡単に修得することができると目されている。

Canvaは同名のオーストラリアのスタートアップにより開発された。今年の3月に同社は300万米ドルの資金調達ラウンドを発表した。このラウンドにはMatrix Partners、InterWest Partners、500 Startups、Facebookのエンジニアリング部門ディレクターを務めるLars Rasmussen氏、Yahoo! CFOのKen Goldman氏などの著名な投資家が参加した。

After being in development for the past year, the app is finally being unveiled to early adopters.

Upon logging in, I was directed to a home screen with a set of predefined canvas sizes which matches the dimensions of a Facebook profile cover, A4 document, or presentation. Users can select custom dimensions as well.

Picking any one of the preset dimensions would bring me to the design page, where I can pick from a number of possible designs. To use a particular template, I’ll just need to drag and drop it onto the canvas.

1年の開発期間を経て、アプリはついにアーリーアダプター向けに公開された。

ログインすると、Facebookのプロフィールカバー、A4サイズのドキュメントあるいはプレゼンテーション用に対応する予め決められたらサイズのキャンバス一式がホーム画面に表示される。ユーザーはサイズを自分で選択することもできる。

サイズを選択するとデザインページに移り、選ぶことできる多くのデザインが表示される。キャンバスにドラッグアンドドロップするだけでテンプレートを使用することができる。

The app makes using stock images easy. Canva has a searchable library of premium images which cost $1 each per design use — much cheaper than what many stock photography sites are offering. In total, users can pick from one million images and hundreds of fonts. I also have the option of selecting images from my computer or Facebook account.

I’d certainly like to share more about my experiences, but many of the app’s features doesn’t seem to be working in my case (other users appear to have no issues though). I was told the engineers are pushing a bunch of tweaks, so I’ll update this article when the app is fixed.

Canvaには検索できる有料の画像ライブラリーがありストック画像を簡単に利用することができる。デザイン1つの価格は1米ドルでストック写真を提供しているサイトよりも大幅に安い。ユーザーは100万点の画像と数百のフォントから選ぶことができる。また、自分のコンピューターあるいはFacebookアカウントからの画像を選択することも可能だ。

利用体験についてさらに詳しくお伝えしたいのだが、筆者が使ったときにはアプリの機能の多くが動作していないようだった（他のユーザーは問題がないようだ）。エンジニアが多くの微調整を行っているとのことなのでアプリが修正されたところでこの記事をアップデートするつもりだ。

In any case, Canva holds a lot of promise in giving everyone access to cheap yet sophisticated-looking layouts. But I doubt such tools will entirely displace the profession anytime soon. In fact, it could help designers work more productively and act as another monetization channel since the platform enables creative professionals to share their layout and photos with others.

While there’s been a lot of hype about how apps like Instagram are replacing professional photographers, the creative industry ultimately involves aesthetic taste, an eye for good visuals, and creative spark.

That won’t be as easily replicated.

いずれにせよ、安価で洗練されたレイアウトをだれでも利用できるようにするための手段をCanvaが提供できる可能性はおおいにある。しかし、近い将来にこのようなツールがプロの仕事に取って代わるとは思えない。事実、クリエイティブのプロは自分たちのレイアウトや写真を他者と共有することができるので、このプラットフォームはデザイナーがより生産的に仕事をするのを助け、もう一つの収益化のチャンネルとして機能する可能性がある。

Instagramのようなアプリがプロの写真家に取って変わりつつあると大騒ぎされているが、クリエイティブ業界は最終的に美的なティストやビジュアル対する感覚、創造的なひらめきを必要とする。

それは簡単に置き換えられることはないだろう。

3. There will be 1000 pieces of advice. Listen to all, but only choose those that matters.

From the first point, while it is sweet to have 1000 people giving you advice, it can also be the biggest pain in the butt as well. Before Demo Day, we had a month to prepare our final pitch. We pitched to mentors, investors and to each others. “Fake it until you make it” is the term that we use. Everyday, we pitched like it’s the real pitch at the Demo Day. If there were two people watching your pitch, you will get two different pieces of advice. If there were six, you will probably receive five different advice (likely one of them will agree with some other in the group).

3.　1000のアドバイスをもらうことになるだろう。すべてに耳を傾けること、しかし、重要なものだけを選択すること。

1番目の観点からいうと、アドバイスをしてくれる人が1000人いるということはありがたいことだ、しかしそれは最大の悩み種になることもある。Demo Dayの前に最終のピッチを準備するための期間が1ヶ月あり私たちはメンターや投資家に対しあるいはお互いにピッチを行った。「できるとようになると言い聞かせ、うまく出来るようになるまでがんばろう」と言い聞かせていた。Demo Dayでおこなう本当のピッチだと思って毎日ピッチを行った。ピッチを見ている人が2人いれば2つの違ったアドバイスをもらうだろう。6人ならばおそらく5つの異なったアドバイスだ（6人のうち1人はほかの誰かと同じ意見の可能性が高い）。

Batch 6 of 500 Startups has over 70 percent of founders originating from outside of the US. It feels like going back to college again, except the guys sit next to you will spend like 10 to 12 hours per day working. This gave me a lot of motivation and help needed. No one on my team knows how to set up a server before. Adam, CEO of Binpress, is an expert and offered us all the help when he could.

500 Startupsのバッチプログラム6に参加した創業者の70％以上は米国以外の出身だ。大学時代に戻るようなものだが、となりに座るのは1日10－12時間作業に励むような人々だ。それが私にとって大きなモチベーションになり、また、それから必要な助けを得ることができた。私のチームにはサーバーの設定方法を知る者はいなかったが、エキスパートであるBinpressのCEO、Adamが時間が許す限り必要な手助けをしてくれた。

5. Spend more time with your batchmates and teammates

With the greatest asset of 500 Startups being the co-working space, I have learned from my batchmates as much as learning from the mentors and the staff of 500 Startups. Needless to say, 500 Startups have some of the most awesome staff on earth, with everyone being so caring and giving.

WeChat v5.0 Update Arrives on iOS With Social Gaming, Mobile Payments, and Sticker Store

The long awaited update to WeChat, the popular China-made messaging app, has arrived. This morning WeChat v5.0 for iOS is rolling out (to be followed by the Android iteration soon) with social gaming, mobile payments, and a proper sticker store. Plus a flatter iOS 7-style WeChat icon.

中国製人気メッセージアプリWeChatやっとアップデートされた。今朝iOS版WeChat v5.0がリリースされた。（Android版も間もなくリリースされる）。ソーシャルゲーム、モバイル決済機能、正式なスティッカーストが追加されている。またWeChat アイコンがiOS 7風のフラットなものになっている。

WeChatting and gaming

WeChat’s social gaming linkage works a lot like in Line or KakaoTalk, with supported games letting you sign in via WeChat so as to share scores or challenge friends inside the messaging app. The creator of WeChat, Tencent (HKG:0700), has also updated its Bejeweled-like game TianTian Ai XiaoChu this morning to support WeChat gaming, with more third-party games expected to do so in due course. We’ve yet to see an English-language game incorporate this.

WeChatのソーシャルゲーム連携機能はLineあるいはKakaoTalkのものとほとんど同じように動作する。WeChat経由で対応ゲームにサインインすることで、スコアを共有したりWeChat（メッセージアプリ）内で友達に対戦を挑むことができる。また、WeChatを開発したTencent (HKG:0700)はBejeweled風のゲームTianTian Ai XiaoChuを今朝アップデートしWeChat に対応させた。今後さらに多くサードパーティゲームがWeChat対応になるとみこまれている。英語ゲームが対応するのはまだこれからだ。

(Update: Added in above image of the sticker shop and new Hold Together feature). Mobile payments can be done in WeChat by scanning a QR code or barcode. We’ll test that out once we find a Chinese retailer that supports it.

According to WeChat’s iTunes Store page, the updated app also adds the ability to save favorite content clippings from chats or Moments, and now you can add friends nearby easily with the new Hold Together function.

WeChat v5.0 is now in the iOS App Store.

WeChatのiTunesストアページによるとアップデートされたアプリには、チャットあるいはモーメンツからのお気に入りコンテンツを切り抜きセーブする機能が追加さたという。また、Hold Together機能を使い近くにいる友達を簡単に追加できるようになる。

Say Hi to beautiful location-based experiences

I like content presented on maps. And I’ve been a big fan of Hitotoki, developed by Craig Mod and the folks at Tokyo-based AQ, since a few years back. It was a great collection of geo-tagged stories, wrapped in the kind of beautiful design that great stories deserve. But looking back now, I think that this location-based content concept was a little ahead of its time.

筆者は地図上に表示されたコンテンツが好きだ。数年前からHitotokiの大ファンであった。Craig Mod氏と東京に拠点を置くAQのチームが開発したHitotokiは、素晴らしいストーリーにふさわしい美しいデザインで包まれたジオタグ付けされた物語集だ。しかし今振り返ってみると、位置情報ベースのコンテンツというコンセプトは少し時代の先を行き過ぎていたのかもしれない。

I asked AQ’s Chris Palmieri about the state of Hitotoki a few months back, and I was pretty excited when he told me that it would be relaunching. After a bit of a wait, the new service is now online and is known simply as Hi, living on the web at SayHi.co [1]. Like Hitotoki, it asks you to ‘sketch’ a moment from where you are, comprised of a photo and some text. The process is optimized for smartphones, geotagging your moment as you add it. Chris notes that Hitotoki and Hi began with the same goal of a 500-word moment, but points out that “how each [one] makes that happen couldn’t be more different.”

数カ月前にAQのChris Palmieri氏にHitotokiの状況について尋ねたところ、再開されるとの情報を得、大変嬉しく思っていた。その後しばらくして、新サービスはHiというシンプルな名称で開始された（サイトはSayHi.co [1]）。Hitotokiと同様にHiでは、自分がいる場所から、写真と短いメモで構成されるモーメント（瞬間）を「スケッチ」するよう求められる。このプロセスはスマートフォンに最適化されており、ユーザーがモーメンを追加するときにジオタグ付けが行われる。Chris notes氏によるとHitotokiもHiも、モーメントのメモは500ワードを目標にして始まったが、それを達成するための方法は異なるという。

I had a chance to take an early look at Hi, testing it out over the past few months. So far my contributions are few and far between – both in terms of time and distance – but there’s a reason for that. While Hi doesn’t ask you to be overly meticulous in composing your moments, for me, the incredible design of the site implicitly demands a certain level of reflection before publishing. It makes me want take a weekend train out of Tokyo, and not come back until I have snapped the perfect selfie with a buddist zen master, and a compose a clever photo caption – preferably in haiku form – to go along with it.

筆者はいち早くHiを見せてもらう機会を得、実際に数ヶ月間試してみた。これまでのところ投稿したのはほんの数回で利用するのはごく稀だ（時間的にも距離的にも）。しかしそれには理由がある。Hiではモーメンの作成に関して細かいことを要求されるわけではないが、サイトの素晴らしいデザインを見ると、投稿する前にあるレベルの考察をするように暗に求められているように感じてしまう。Hiを使うと、週末に列車で東京から抜けだし、禅師と一緒の完璧な自分撮りをし、それに合う気の利いたキャプションを付けるまでは帰りたくないと感じてしまうのだ。
