The number of people killed in terrorist attacks jumped more than 60 percent from 2012 to 2013, due largely to unrest in the Middle East and Nigeria, a report released Tuesday found.

Deaths due to terrorism rose from 11,133 in 2012 to 17,958 in 2013, according to the Global Terrorism Index produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace, a think tank based in Australia.

As much as "The Grand Budapest Hotel" takes on the aspect of a cinematic confection, it does so to grapple with the very raw and, yes, real stuff of humanity from an unusual but highly illuminating angle. "The Grand Budapest Hotel" is a movie about the masks we conjure to suit our aspirations, and the cost of keeping up appearances. "He certainly maintained the illusion with remarkable grace," one character remarks admiringly of another near the end of the movie. "The Grand Budapest Hotel" suggests that sometimes, as a species, that's the best we can do. Anderson the illusion-maker is more than graceful, he's dazzling, and with this movie he's created an art-refuge that consoles and commiserates.

I'm not convinced that the world really needed a big budget, 3-D, feature-length reboot of the adventures of Mr. Peabody and his boy Sherman, but here it is. It's better than OK, and a few elements sing; but overall it frustrates. Its delights come from its willingness to depart from formula, but formula still rules it.
The picture is based on the classic Jay Ward shorts that used to appear on Rocky and Bullwinkle's animated variety show, back during TV's late jurassic period. The film's director Rob Minkoff ("The Lion King") and his screenwriter Craig Wright ("Lost") don't knock themselves out trying to replicate every nuance.

They've kept the central relationship between a genius dog (Ty Burrell) and his adopted human son (Max Charles), plus the time machine they travel in, and a few of Mr. Peabody's brazenly horrible puns (at one point the pooch tells his boy that Egypt's pyramids were designed by "some old Giza"). Everything else, though, has been ginned up, seemingly to bring "Mr. Peabody & Sherman" in line with American studio animation's unofficial house style. I'm referring to a familiar set of qualities developed during the Disney renaissance of the late '80s and early '90s, and perfected, if that is the word, by the "Shrek" series, and movies in a "Shrek"-like vein.

Conyac has now enabled public translation request search

Before the requestors could not browse previously submitted translation requests. Now they can get an overview of what kind of translations were requested on Conyac earlier, which gives them a better insight of the Conyac translation submission, as well as the end results. They can search by keyword to find the same types of texts they need. Past translations serve as a reference of Conyac translation quality and process.

Our company was selected as one of the 9 startups to pitch directly to a panel of judges at the Echelon Japan Satellite. Hi, I’m Nozomi Okuma, Marketing Manager at Conyac. My native language is Japanese and I’ve been studying English as a second language for almost half of my life. I don’t have much problem with speaking two languages but when it comes to translating, I realize that the ability that I need for speaking and translating is completely different.

The reason why I started to translate is because I wanted to use my bilingual skill and open up a career as a translator. I didn’t have any education in translation and it is obviously difficult for an inexperienced translator like me to get a job. The most difficult part about translation is that many words in one language don’t have an equivalent word in another. Even if they did, using the equivalent word may not fit into the context or the style of the language you are translating into. I needed to gain more vocabulary and know more about grammar and the style of both languages thoroughly.

I practice my skills with every translation. I learn new words and find proper ways to express statements in different languages. Now I am becoming more confident about my translations and am also able to earn more money.

There is a variety of documents to translate at Conyac but in my observation the top three types of documents are business related e-mails, articles and reviews. I’ve seen some scenarios and stories being requested for translation as well.

Most texts are usually very short and quite simple. What are the member roles?

"Admin" has full authority for its group and member settings. Admin can purchase points and access request details for entire organization.

"Managers" have full access to payment and request history of the organization. However, they cannot edit group settings or purchase points.

"Members" can participate in the group by making a request with the organization's points. They have limited access to organization's profile, as they can only view own payment and request history.
