I was a little skeptical on writing characters on a mobile screen without a stylus, but I gave this new feature a quick test run and it works really well (see screenshots below). It’s certainly a handy way to quickly identify tough characters when you’re about and about, and I think can it can be a very good tool for language learners as well.

If you’d like to give it a try, make sure your Google Translate app is up to date, and take it for a spin.

1. Developer Lucsens has a few camera-based dictionary solutions for iOS, though I’ve yet to test them. There’s also nciku for iPhone/iPad and Tencent’s OCR translation app which might be decent options as well. ↩

スタイラスなしでタッチスクリーンに文字を書くのは難しいと思っていたが、この新機能を試してみたところ、しっかりと動作していた。（下のスクリーンショット）これは意味のわからない難しい文字を素早く判別するのにぴったりだ。そして外国語を勉強中の良いツールにもなると思う。

もしこの機能を試したいなら、Google翻訳アプリが最新版にアップデートされているのを確認してから、実行しよう。
