戦前日本はエネルギー源を森林や水力発電のような国内の再生可能資源に依存していたため、家庭エネルギーの国内自給率は非常に高かった。戦後のエネルギー革命は日常生活に様々な利点をもたらしたが、エネルギーの自給率を低下させ、エネルギー供給の不安定性を高めた。また化学肥料の普及と相まり森林資源の必要性は急速に低下した。その結果急激な都市への人口集中によって市街地の薪炭林は急速に宅地に転用されていった。戦前の都市家庭でエネルギー消費が効率的になったとはいえ、その度合いは限定的であった。

Japan depended on renewable resources such as woods and　hydroelectric power in the country, which realized the high self-efficient ratio of home energy . The energy revolution brought about a variety of advantages to our daily life, but it also lowered the self-efficient ratio of energy and raised the instability of energy supply. It also　drastically lowered the demand of forest resources combined with the spread of chemical fertilizers. As a result, because of the rapid population concentration, the fuelwood forests in urban areas have been rapidly converted to　dwelling lands. They say energy consumption at urban homes has become efficient before the war, but it was limited.
