薬師寺のある西ノ京は奈良市の西に位置し、この付近には歴史的遺産が多く残されています。


境内に入るとまず目に飛び込むのが、薬師寺のシンボルとも言える国宝の東塔。
一見六重に見えますが、実は三重の塔。
各層に裳階［もこし］と呼ばれる小さい屋根があるためです。
この大小の屋根の重なりが醸し出す律動的な美しさから「凍れる音楽」という愛称で親しまれています。
現在は解体修理のためおおいに覆われています。
次に姿を拝めるのは２０１９年の春だとか。

Nishinokyo, where Yakushiji stands, is located in the west of Nara city, and there are a lot of historical heritages left near there.
At a glance, it appears to be 6-story, but actually is the 3-story pagoda.
That is because there are small roofs called Mokoshi in each story.
It is loved as the name of “Frozen Music", for its rhythmical beauty generated by the combining of big and small roofs.
Currently it is covered with cloth because of disassembly and repair.
Next time you can observe its appearance will be the spring, 2019.
