スペースコロニーへの宇宙移民が始まって半世紀あまりが過ぎた宇宙世紀0079年。地球から最も遠く（月の向こう側）に位置するコロニー群・サイド3は“ジオン公国”を名乗り、地球連邦からの独立を求め、独立戦争を挑んできた。
