The narcocorrido is a Mexican style of ballad that draws from mariachi, blues and country music elements, with a tempo and accordion accompaniment straight out of polka. It's a strange brew. Stranger still are the lyrics, which find melodious ways to exalt violent, ruthless drug dealers, the kind who assassinate cops and decapitate snitches. Actual drug trafficking gangs often commission the songs, both inspiring and taking inspiration from their grisly lyrics. In the documentary "Narco Cultura" narcocorrido producers and musicians brag that their folksy genre is about to become "the next hip hop," a popular form born in the dreams and frustrations of poor people.
El narcocorrido es una balada mexicana que nace del mariachi, country y blues con un tempo y un acordeón sacados del polka. Es una mezcla extraña. Y aún más extrañas son las letras, que encuentran formas melodiosas de exaltar la violencia, narcotraficantes, el tipo que asesina policías y decapita soplones. Narcotraficantes reales suelen contribuir a las canciones, tanto inspirandolas, como inspirandose de ellas. En el documental "Narco Cultura" músicos y productores de narcocorrido presumen de que su género algo folklórico será el nuevo hiphop, una forma popular nacida de los sueños y frustraciones de los pobres.
