神聖な場所に参拝に行くには世間の穢れを落としてから行かなければならないので、川や滝で身を清める必要がありました。
その清めの場として使われていたのが、母の白滝でした。
そうして、この辺りは富士山登拝のために身を清めに来た人達が多く訪れるようになり、やがて宿場として栄えるようになりました。
その宿場一帯に住んでいて、身を清めに来た人達の世話をしたり、神社を管理したりしていたのが御師という神主の集団でした。このように、この河口湖周辺や富士山の自然は人々の生活と深く結びついているのです

Then, many people visited this place for the purification before their Mountain pilgrimage, and this place prospered as a post-town.
The people lived around the post-town, took care of the people visited there for the purification, and administrated Shrine were called Onshi, the group of Shinto. In this way, the nature around Kawaguchi lake and Mt. Fuji is closely related to the lifestyle of people.
