Poverty is factor in population growth in these areas. In poorer countries, having many children is an important asset. They have to work in the fields, take care of their siblings, and, when they become adults, provide support for their parents' old age. About half of the world's population is under age 25, and the majority live in developing countries. As those billions of young people start their own families, billions more people will be added to the world's population.
