English

Today, let's introduce the Japanese cultural tradition known as hanami, or flower-viewing.

In Japanese, the character 花 (pronounced "hana") means "flower", and the character 見 ("mi"), means "to view".
In short, "hanami" means, "to view flowers".
What kinds of flowers are we viewing? We are viewing sakura, which are cherry blossoms.

Hanami is the tradition of enjoying a meal and some alcoholic beverages at a park or temple while watching the cherry blossoms.

Cherry blossoms are Japan's national flower and are loved by the Japanese people.
The flowers are in full bloom around March to April and can be seen and enjoyed all over town.
Most Japanese people feel that they are very beautiful to watch.

The tradition of flower-viewing can be traced to at least a thousand years ago.
The feeling that these cherry blossoms are so beautiful has not changed for a thousand years.
