ネオ日本画は現代美術家が2001年に考案した美術ジャンルの概念。岩絵具、膠、墨などを使用した絵画を日本画というが、現代の日本画とされている画材だけで延命しているだけのジャンルとは違い、輪郭線などの線描表現や、装飾性、象徴性、遊戯性といった日本美術の要素をアクリル絵具等の新素材を用いて描くジャンル。かつ、日本美術の古典的なエッセンスを引用して現代を活写するもの。日本画というジャンルができる以前の日本絵画の各流派の表現スタイルを現代的に試みた様式。浮世絵も「ネオ日本画」に含まれる
Neo Nihonga is a concept of art genre created by a contemporary artist in 2001. The term Nihonga refers to a painting in which iwa-enogu(natural mineral pigments), nikawa(animal glue solution) , and sumi(chinese ink) are used.
Neo Nihonga is not the genre survived with traditional painting materials defined in comtemporary Nihonga, but is the genre in which different elements of Japanese art such as line drawing, decorativeness,symbolism and playfulness are expressed using new materials like acrylic paint. Further more, Neo Nihonga is the art which describes vividly comtemporary age quoting classic essence of Japanese art. It's a style in which various schools of Japanese painting before the establishment of genre of Nihonga are experimented in comtemporary way. Ukiyoe is included in Neo Nihonga.
