Strong negative feelings about a spouse or partner always scored. Lukewarm endorsement of a partner could also score if such comments were not counterbalanced with positive remarks. Not scored were ambivalent comments that were embedded in a larger context of mostly positive feelings. Thus, this fourth category scored a respondent's disillusionment or unhappiness with marriage. The following response was scored for ambivalent comments: "Marriage has great appeal in the abstract, but not so much in the particular."
