Exit Games was also keen not to be left behind. This week saw support for both HTML5 and Windows Phone – itself enjoying something of a positive week according to the latest numbers from the US – added to version 3 of its networking engine Photon.

Despite such support, however, Qualcomm believes it's business, and not technology, that will drive adoption of HTML5.

"As a technologist, sometimes you just have to step back and say, this is a new technology, the decisions are going to be driven by the people that are generating the revenue," said president of Qualcomm's Internet Services unit, Rob Chandhok.

Opinions on just what impact HTML5 – and, in particular, Project Spartan – will have in the coming years are not so easily defined, however.

Despite its pending popularity, for instance, Mobile Pie's Will Luton told us he wasn't convinced the launch of Spartan would signal the demise of HTML5's rival Flash.

This week saw one other casualty as a result of the company's recent failures. CEO Leo Apotheker was unceremoniously dumped just 11 months into his tenure, replaced by Meg Whitman, who previously led eBay for over a decade.

Just like last week, however, the prospect of something new was countered by the legacy of something old – or, more accurately, dead.

NPD's latest numbers suggest almost half of smartphone consumers in the US are considering a Windows Phone as their next purchase, though the other half seemingly have no idea what it is.

Peas in an iPod

Microsoft will be hoping the addition of Nokia to the platform's roster of OEMs will help raise Windows Phone's profile accordingly, though the Finnish firm is itself still getting its house in order ready for the launch of its first phone running the OS.

Reynolds isn’t the only core game developer to make the jump to social games. Over the last couple of years, we’ve seen new social game ventures from Raph Koster, Richard Garriot, Brenda Brathwaite, John Romero, and Sid Meier. InMobi Helps Sega’s iOS Game Hit Number One on iTunes, on Admob’s Home Turf

InMobi is growing at an accelerated pace. And it is interesting that a company of that size originated in Asia – from India, to be precise. First called mKhoj, it soon rebranded to InMobi and targeted markets where Google’s Admob couldn’t reach. It then acquired US-based Sprout to harness its HTML5 mobile ad capabilities.

The company didn’t stop making the headlines there, as it recently received $200 million in funding from Softbank, which could possibly hint that InMobi has some big plans in Japan. Now, InMobi isn’t just showing its prowess in Asian markets; it’s snatching clients from Admob in the US, right under Google’s nose, and on its home turf.

A recent blog post by InMobi shared that the company has helped Sega’s Sonic
& Sega All-Stars Racing hit number one in the iTunes App Store. It’s interesting because Sega actually chose InMobi over its US competitors. And InMobi did a great job on the in-game ads — achieving a higher than average click-through-rate (CTR) of 0.9 percent — for the folks at Sega America. So much so, that the client has agreed to do a case study with them.

In all fairness, I’m sure Admob has also helped many of its clients hit the charts on iTunes. But reading the case study from InMobi made me reflect how the company reached this stage in its development. I once asked an InMobi rep about the difference between InMobi and other mobile ad networks. The answer, in short, was execution.

From a layman’s point of view, there isn’t much difference between InMobi and its competitors. They all sell mobile ads. From what we understand, the mobile ad network is also engaging with Africa, and is certainly one of the early movers in that market.

Nonetheless, that’s just the start for InMobi as the world anticipates its next step, especially with an extra $200 million in the bank.

Rumor: Baidu Invests In Group Buying Vertical 36tuan.com

Baidu, the largest Chinese search engine is rumored to have invested in group buying vertical 36tuan.com, right after another similar service Miqi.cn announced its $1.5m Series A round of funding from DT Capital Partners

Apart from 36tuan and Miqi, Jumei.com which is competing in the same forefront has also raised US$ tens of millions from Sequoia in March of this year.

Founded by serial entrepreneur Tsinghua graduate Su Haizhen in 2010, 36tuan now claims over 1 million registered users with about 100 staff.
