Optimizely has indeed been playing in a growth space. In a recent Adobe survey of 259 marketing executives, 66 percent said they’re using A/B testing, compared to just 56 percent last year.Optimizely has picked up a big chunk of market share in the burgeoning space. Its biggest customers include CNN (which uses Optimizely to see which of its headlines work best), Crate and Barrel, Intuit, Microsoft Store, Priceline, and Virgin America.“It also has a free plan in its current pricing that is limited to certain features and 50,000 monthly unique visitors, which appeals to small businesses,” said VB Insights analyst Stewart Rogers.
“However, no conversion optimization tool has yet managed to provide every CRO (conversion rate optimization) feature in one,” Rogers said. “Optimizely would be well placed to win with a wider feature set, given its current market penetration.” (You can see VB Insight’s recent report on the CRO space here.)Optimizely seems to be aware of the need to expand its offering. The company recently added a new personalization platform, which uses first-party and third-party customer data to customize content delivered to specific consumers.
Functional assistantsNative ads are appealing to advertisers because, as Prusz notes, their clickthrough rates are two to five times greater than those of display ads. They often offer content that complements the surrounding editorial, so they expand on a user’s interest the way Google search ads do.There’s also the expectation that mobile web ad blockers have a harder time blocking native ads, because they are served as part of an editorial feed. But some tests have shown that native ads can be blocked, so publishers and advertisers may soon be upping their arms race to serve in-content ads more like content.
To move mobile ads away from being annoyances, Shapira wants to see them evolve into their next role, that of functional assistants, serving answers to your specific questions.“In five to seven years, ads will be so efficient and effective,” he told me, “you won’t be aware of them.” They will operate more like intelligent recommendations, he said. Or, possibly, some recommendation engines will essentially operate like curators of selected ads — which could raise their utility while risking lowered trust.Shapira pointed to the app for the Uber car service, where you request a car and then one that meets your requirements is presented to you. “It’s [like] the ‘I feel lucky button’ on Google, every time,“ he said.
Airbnb bookings reportedly expected to double to 80 million this yearAirbnb’s leaked internal performance numbers predict that it will double nightly bookings to 80 million this year, according to Reuters. The report cites a previous estimate from investment bank Piper Jaffray earlier this year that projected Airbnb’s nightly bookings would only rise to 61 million this year, up from 40 million last year. But apparently that estimate was far too conservative.
Assuming the leaked numbers end up being true and despite the fact that, in any case, they’re impressive growth figures, a large part of the surprise here is that Airbnb has been particularly hampered by the U.S. regulatory environment. Just one such example is a San Francisco proposal to limit the use of homes as hotels. Airbnb would obviously be on the front line of businesses to be hit by such a law.
3 lessons on switching from bootstrapped to VC-fundedEvery entrepreneur must choose whether to bootstrap a company or use venture capital to fuel it. I’ve traveled these two drastically different paths. I spent more than a decade building a bootstrapped, profitable cash flow business, only to put all my chips back on the table with two venture-backed companies. My journey began with an interactive agency I founded in college called Cie Digital Labs, which then went on to incubate two successful venture-backed spin-outs. Last year, Cie Games was acquired by Glu Mobile for $100M, and my current venture Nativo recently raised a $20 million Series B round.
Greycroft didn’t offer Nativo the highest valuation, but offered the greatest value by demonstrating their domain expertise and ability to make high-value introductions. Within three months, Greycroft introduced us to senior contacts at publisher prospects that would have otherwise taken us a year to reach. Looking back, their involvement was a big part of our early success.
3. The Difference Between Building Purpose Versus ProfitVC’s forced me to think of the long game and playing to a future vision. While I thought I understood vision, every decision at my bootstrapped company came back to profit and that limited my ability to achieve full buy-in from the team. Shifting to a broader mission–focused on transforming a category or space–significantly expanded my ability to engage employees, industry peers, and customers.
Founded by Hoyoung Ban, who is also the CEO, NEOFECT is doing that with RAPAEL, a US$1,000 robotic glove that runs on Android and connects to the user’s phone and TV screens via Bluetooth. Users can don the glove on and manipulate virtual objects on display screens with games and other entertaining activities; this takes away the typical ‘boring’ aspects of rehabilitative programmes. Furthermore, patients will no longer need to head to the hospital for in-person visits; doctors can easily monitor the patients remotely and follow-up using data from the programme.
According to NEOFECT, hospitals in South Korea have already incorporated RAPAEL into their programmes. The company has also established an office in the US to meet the needs of patients across North America. In order to find out more about the company and RAPAEL, we spoke to Ban.Here are the edited excerpts…Tell me more about NEOFECT.Stroke has an immediate effect (work, mobility, medical costs), not just on the patients themselves but also on their loved ones. Our vision is to make a difference in society, by delivering hope of recovery through affordable rehabilitation and care.
Stroke patients experience long-term disability due to neuron damage, not muscle cells. You cannot revive the dead cells, but you can enhance brain plasticity by training the undamaged cells. Our smart rehab solution, RAPAEL, delivers the combination of hardware to aid the movements of the disabled body parts, and software to analyse and boost its effectiveness, which can greatly improve the rehab process.
There are many people who need the solution, but cannot afford rehab on account of insurance issues, cost, etc. In the US, stroke victims typically get only a few months of rehab after being discharged from the hospital. In reality, however, they need on-going rehab throughout their lifetime. So we want to provide them with an alternative solution, to be able to motivate themselves using a more affordable, at-home assistance.
How did you come up with the idea? The idea had initially come from my friend and our CTO, Young Choi, who holds a PhD in Computer Science from University of Southern California. At first, he made a rehab robot but realised that it was not practical for personal and at-home use due to production cost, size, etc. However, his research showed that there clearly is a good market for affordable post-stroke care and rehab, and he wanted to pursue the research. I had experience setting up my own tech business both in Korea and the US, so he approached me to discuss the idea.
The idea of delivering an affordable solution to help stroke victims get back on to their feet was particularly appealing for me because of my personal experience — I’ve lost my father to a stroke attack and also two of my uncles were confined to the care of their families because they couldn’t afford rehabilitation care. So I know how difficult it is having to let your loved one lose the ability to go through their day-to-day activities just because you can’t afford the rehab costs. How big is the company now? There are 45 people in our Korea and US office. We have experts in engineering, software development and rehab therapy as part of the R&D team, as well as an in-house hardware production capacity.
Discovering that a QA engineer is a champion yo-yo expert (we actually have one of these on staff) tells us that she possesses the patience and flexibility needed to work alongside different teams. Knowing that a software engineer feels confident heading out for a five-day backpacking trip in the wilderness demonstrates his planning skills as well as his ability to adapt to unforeseen changes or challenges. Conversely, skilled chess players are able to display high levels of concentration and ignore distractions around them, so they should be considered a resource when looking to solve highly technical issues that take a great deal of focus.

Operated under a franchise model, Ubox runs more than 30,000 machines across 58 cities in locations like transit stations and shopping malls across China, according to the company.“China’s vending machine market is still at an early stage of development, with great potential for growth. The industry has seen an accelerated pace of growth in recent years, driven by increasing disposable income, rising urban population density and consumers’ preference for convenient lifestyles.” said Eric Zhang, managing director of the Carlyle Asia buyout team.
