Baby e-store Tororo is the new startup from Kaskus CEO Ken Dean Lawadinata

Tororo.com, an e-commerce site that sells baby products online, is Kaskus CEO’s Ken Dean Lawadinata new startup. The startup is self-funded and has been in operation since late February, with over 30 employees.

Ken says that In the last eight months he has been splitting his time between Kaskus and Tororo. Besides good time management skills, Ken credited his staff for making this journey smoother.

“I have a team in place [at Tororo] consisting of experienced [people] in the retail chain such as Carrefour and Lotte. With that I can separate my time between this project and Kaskus,” he said.

Ken’s thoughts remind me a bit of Jack Ma, the founder of e-commerce giant Alibaba Group. Jack Ma previously said that because infrastructure in China is poor, e-commerce sites have become the “main course” for many Chinese people to purchase products that they would otherwise have to travel long hours to big cities to get. The same situation is also seen in Indonesia. But perhaps e-commerce sites in Indonesia face greater logistical challenges as the nation is made up of over 17,000 islands.

Tororo’s traction has been pretty decent so far, especially for a founder who is running two companies at the same time. In eight months, Ken said that his new baby e-commerce startup is currently seeing around 50,000 unique visitors and generating over $200,000 in transaction value each month. Tororo is also used by local Indonesian celebrities like Dian Sastro and Nia Ramadhani.

In the Indonesian baby e-commerce space, Tororo faces competition from Bilna.com, a local baby e-commerce startup that received seed funding in November last year.

Malaysian financial comparison startup iMoney raises $2 million

iMoney, a free online personal finance platform that helps users make comparisons between loans, credit cars, and other banking services, today announced it has raised $2 million in a series A funding round.

This funding is from a consortium of internationally renowned investors featuring Jungle Ventures, and other investors include 500 Startups, Rebright Partners, ECONA AG, Vogel Ventures, IMJ Fenox, Fenox Venture Capital (Full disclosure: Fenox VC is an investor in Tech in Asia. This Malaysian startup had also recently raised $500,000 in seed funding from Asia Venture Group (AVG) back in June. Since then, it has expanded beyond Malaysia to five other countries: Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, Hong Kong, and Indonesia.

Lee Ching Wei, iMoney’s co-founder and group CEO plans to further strengthen the company’s number one market position in Malaysia and Southeast Asia with this new round of funding.

The company also appointed former CIMB, Citi and RBS senior banker Bruno Araujo as co-founder and chief revenue officer.

Lee gave the following statement about the funding:

iMoney is growing at double digits month-on-month, and while we’re already the largest financial comparison business in the region, we want to further accelerate this. This round of funding will allow us to continue to invest in user acquisition and to strengthen our operational teams on the ground, with the aim of bringing iMoney to the next level.

Lee added that the primary reason for iMoney’s success is due to the sheer volume of business iMoney already referns to financial institutions, which currently stands close to $70 million a month.

Araujo sees a lot of potential in the company he recently joined:

The financial services space is amongst the most exciting for tech investors in Asia and iMoney is well ahead of its peers when it comes to disrupting this industry. In Malaysia alone there are $33 billion of new home loans written every year and less than 0.1 percent of that is originated online. If you consider the other countries where iMoney has a leading presence, like Indonesia, Hong Kong, Thailand etc. then we’re talking about a $100 billion market.

Almost all social shopping services are depending on Alibaba as a majority of items for those sites to index are from Taobao and Tmall. Both Mogujie and Meilishuo make most of revenues from referral commissions, a large percentage of which is from Alibaba properties — The rest is from display advertising.

There’s also rumor that Alibaba restricted access to its e-commerce marketplaces, for it is said that Alibaba wasn’t happy about the fact that Meilishuo and Mogujie grew so big and were making money on top of it. It is founded that the organic traffic on Mogujie and Meilishuo started decelerating. In June 2013, Li Yanzhu, co-founder of Mogujie left the company.

China Recorded 1.21 Billion Mobile Phone Users, To Construct 7 Backbone Network Nodes

China recorded 1.21 billion mobile phone users by the end of September, with mobile phone penetration rate increasing 6.7% year-on-year to 89.2 sets per 100 people, according to data released by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (report in Chinese).

The number of 3G subscribers soared 48.73 million in the third quarter of this year to 368 million, accounting for 30.5% of the total. TD users represent 60.2% of newly added 3G subscribers.

New Oriental was one of the first private study centers in China after the government launched the Reform and Opening-up. Starting from preparing students, in order to apply to foreign universities, for exams such as GRE and IELTS, it later would cover all kinds of exams and become the first private education company that went public on the NASDAQ. After New Oriental, a wave of private study centers emerged in China, among which some like Xueda, TAL and Ambow grew big.

Lerni is like an enterprise software for study centers or other educational services. More than a few Chinese startups are building enterprise software. They bet that eventually all businesses would adopt enterprise software to improve efficiency or for convenience and they’d pay.

Zhaozhao Bets on People/Pet Tracking Market in China

An average of 200 thousand Chinese kids from 0 to 14 years old that got lost every year. More than 4 million messages on Sina Weibo, the most popular micro-blogging platform in China, are for searching for lost pets. Zhu Liqiang mentioned those numbers to justify Zhaozhao, a gadget his company is working on.

The accompanying iOS/Android app can track down whoever carrying the smaller-than-palm gadget, kids, seniors or pets, locating where they are and saving all the data onto the cloud platform which is powered by Baidu Cloud. You can see the surroundings of it at any given time, which is powered by Soso Streeview.

Apps or gadgets for tracking kids or pets are not new, but the market in China is at an early stage.

Instant messenger Cubie gets grounded on the desktop

Taiwan-based Cubie, an instant messenger app, is now available on Chrome browsers. It first emerged as a side project of the company’s CTO

Chrome users, rejoice! Taiwan-based mobile messenger app Cubie is now available on the Chrome Web Store as a free extension, Cubie Lite.

Launched this morning, the desktop client wasn’t exactly planned. James Hill, International Messenger (who heads business development), Cubie, told e27 that their chief technology officer (CTO), Ingram Chen, had decided to play around with the Dart programming language and build such an extension as a side project.
