Greetings!! I wanted to thank you for sending the lens to me so timely!
I am a truck driver and just got back home after being gone and driving the truck away from home. I just got to open the lens you sent me. I got home (8-30-2014).
I do not own a full frame camera and tried the lens you sent me on my camera. The results were unfortunately not good. I have too much blur in the frame of the photos. I am aware of the 14 day return policy. But due to the nature of my work and the United States having a legal holiday here called Labor Day. I will miss the 14 day return deadline. (Our post office opens after the return deadline).

Xiaomi officially launches in Indonesia with Redmi 1S

Today popular Chinese gadget manufacturer Xiaomi officially launches in Indonesia. Company heads Hugo Barra and Lin Bin flew to Jakarta and presented its first product for the country: the IDR 1.5 million (US$128) Redmi 1S. Surprisingly, that’s a bit cheaper compared to the selling price in neighboring Singapore (S$169 or US$136); gadgets are generally more expensive in Indonesia.

The Redmi 1S first will be exclusively sold on ecommerce site Lazada Indonesia. The online sale will commence on September 4 at 11am until stocks last. Interested buyers should first register themselves on Lazada Indonesia’s website here. The company did not reveal how many phones they have prepared for the first flash sale.

The Redmi 1S is a 4.7-inch Android phone with 1280×720 IPS screen. The phone is powered by a 1.6GHz quad-core Snapdragon 400 processor, 1GB RAM, Adreno 305 GPU, 8MP back camera, and 1.6MP front camera. The phone supports dual SIMs.

Partnering with phone distributors such as Erajaya and Trikomsel, Xiaomi has 17 service centers in 15 cities in Indonesia. Barra and Bin teased that the next phone to be sold in the archipelago would be the Redmi Note.

Actually, Indonesians can already buy Xiaomi phones via estore Blibli, albeit at a more expensive price tag. But hey, that could still be a good alternative for those who miss out on the flash sales program and don’t want to wait.

Another interesting feature of Zhaocaibao is subscription. Yuebao users who connected their accounts to Zhaocaibao platform can pre-set expected interest rates, loan time, and financial product type. The system will place the orders automatically when any financial products complies with the conditions were listed within 30 days.

With Zhaocaibao, users can invest a minimum 100 yuan (US$16.25) to 1,000 yuan of funds.

The company now cooperates with more than 40 financial institutions of banks, funds, insurance companies to provide fixed interest financial services to both SMEs and individual investors on the platform.

Zhaocaibao was under testing since this April with turnovers hitting 11 billion yuan as of August 5, of which 90% come from Yuebao, introduced Yuan Leiming, CEO of the company. With more than 500K users now, the product claimed an annualized yield of 5.4% to 7%, with loan lives ranges between 3 months to 3 years.

Yuan added that Zhaocaibao do not manage the funds, but cooperate with financial institutions that provide guarantees to the capital. Users have to pay up to 0.2% of commissions upon funds redemption, of which 0.1% is being paid to the guaranty institutions, said Yuan.

Enter Xiaomi, by far Ouya’s biggest partner to date. Xiaomi will get access to the 40,000 developers and 900 games on Ouya’s platform. The details are still being hammered out, and no financial dealings were disclosed except that the two companies will share revenue.

Ouya’s games are designed to be used with gamepads, similar to Playstation, Xbox, and Nintendo consoles. Its timely entrance into the Chinese market comes just as the Xbox One prepares to go on sale next month. While it’s not clear what the deal means for the console side of Ouya’s business, the tie-up with Xiaomi will help it enter Chinese households around the same time as Microsoft’s game console titan.

Xiaomi has expressed interest in gaming before. In February, it bought a stake in Kingsoft subsidiary Westhouse for $20 million. Westhouse mainly makes PC-based MMOs.

Xiaomi sells most of its devices at near-cost of production, which means it has a long-term plan of making money from software and internet value-added services on those phones, tablets, TVs, and set-top boxes. Gaming certainly falls under that umbrella. Earlier this year, Xiaomi led a US$310 million investment in streaming video site and media portal Xunlei to help beef up its entertainment offerings.

Alibaba introduces self-pickup delivery spots in Hong Kong as it flexes its logistics muscles

Chinese ecommerce giant Alibaba announced today it will introduce self-pickup delivery across Hong Kong today for goods purchased on Taobao Marketplace Hong Kong, in partnership with 7-11 and Hongkong Post, the city’s government-run postal service.

Now, users based in Hong Kong who buy goods off of Taobao Marketplace can opt to pick up their items at one of over 200 designated locations. 125 of these locations belong to Hongkong Post, while 7-11 and a bevy of local logistics providers operate the remainder.

Alibaba has steadily expanded its ecommerce tentacles beyond mainland China and into neighboring territories. It’s exported its Alipay offline payments service to convenience stores in Hong Kong and Taiwan, and inked deals with Japan’s Rakuten and South Korea’s Lotte.com to offer online escrow transactions. Meanwhile, back in May it invested a respectable US$250 million in SingPost, Singapore’s semi-private postal service. It’s not clear if these partnerships will successfully persuade Hong Kongers or Singaporeans to buy more goods on Alibaba’s ecommerce sites, but the company will do what it can to boost its market position in the name of expansion.

Weibo Has Become Another Sina?

I was surprised when I came across a pop-up bar featuring a piece of news at the bottom of my Weibo homepage the other day. That’s what Chinese online news sites have been doing. Tencent uses pop-up windows to push news and other notifications to the users of its flagship application QQ IM. Sina, without a user base like QQ’s years back, would push breaking news through a pop-up bar at the bottom of an article page. So, Weibo simply took the old-fashioned way.

Two months ago Weibo joined a US$100 million round of investment in personalized news app Toutiao. A recent chat with a mid-level exec at Sina proved me right that Sina saw traffic growth slow and needed Toutiao to direct traffic, otherwise they couldn’t raise ad rates, which the company has been doing in order to grow revenue.

Sina’s major revenue sources are display advertising on the news portal and 2G mobile services, with the latter keeping declining in the past years. The company counts on traffic growth to increase ad revenue. The portal ad revenue only increased 5.9% year-over-year in Q2 2014 and non-ad revenues declined 11%.

Toutiao is the largest news app on Weibo in terms of shared posts, according to Sina management. What’s surprising is it isn’t Sina that built such an app and leveraged Weibo to become the largest news service on the platform. It was believed Weibo is an ideal medium to have readers stick with Sina as the company controls all the ad placements and can manipulate content such as search rankings.

When Toutiao was launched in the same month two years ago, Weibo had already had 368 million registered users and 36.5 million daily active users by the previous quarter. This round of funding in Toutiao values the app at US$500 million, 1/8 of Weibo’s market cap and 1/7 of that of Sina, Weibo’s former parent, as of this writing.

Yes, Weibo isn’t only about news. A variety of services for users and for monetization have been added in the past couple of years. But its revenue structure is still similar to the Sina’s. In Q2 2014, 77% was from advertising and the rest from value-added services.

The major revenue sources for most successful Chinese social services such as Tencent’s QQ and YY, however, are gaming and virtual sales. It’s also true when it comes to mobile. WeChat and Momo, two chatting apps, are making revenues through the two sources. WeChat are also adding e-commerce and online-to-offline services in order to have users make purchases without leaving the app. Weibo has those offerings too, but so far it’s still pretty much a display advertising business.
