Zipdial’s blog post, written by co-founder Valerie Wagoner, explains how the two can merge: “Our ambitious goal is to make Twitter’s unique, great content accessible to 100 percent of the world’s mobile users, including those in emerging markets who will be experiencing the mobile Internet for the first time.”

Twitter’s India team joined the celebration with its own article welcoming the Zipdial team. “Our primary mission, bolstered by this acquisition, is to help every Indian with a mobile device get a great, relevant Twitter experience. We believe Twitter – a platform invented for SMS and rich in media – is a perfect match for India, a mobile-first country with a celebrated media heritage,” wrote Twitter’s Rishi Jaitly.

Twitter and Zipdial have already worked together in the past couple of years on a variety of brand marketing campaigns focused on India, such as MTV India’s #RockTheVote “Dial the Hashtag” campaign.

“This acquisition significantly increases our investment in India, one of the countries where we’re seeing great growth, and also brings us a new engineering office in Bangalore,” adds Twitter’s Christian Oestlien.

Alibaba has invested in a number of overseas startups over the past two years. Some of these investments haven’t borne any fruit that ordinary consumers would notice. Others appear to be deeper collaborations. Following Alibaba’s investment in Quixey, the Mountan View-based startup found its nascent in-app search technology imported onto Yun OS, Alibaba’s mobile operating system. In effect, Alibaba is providing the Quixey with a massive testbed, full of Alibaba-backed properties like UCWeb and Youku, in which it can fine tune its product.

This investment has only just been announced, but already looks likely to follow a similar path. China’s internet giants are aggressively investing in online-to-offline technology that merges mobile marketing and payments with the storefront shopping experience. Yet Alibaba, despite its dominance in China’s ecommerce industry, faces a formidable threat from Tencent, Baidu, and Wanda. The former two internet giants have formed a joint venture with the real estate conglomerate that’s all about merging offline retail with online retail. Details remain scarce on how the three firms will work together, but given Tencent’s dominance in social and ambitions for ecommerce, it will likely overlap with Alibaba’s ambitions for Alipay Wallet. Investments in companies like Visualead will help Alibaba maintain its ties with vendors, and in turn, keep its customers loyal.

Alibaba Launches Team Collaboration App Dingtalk

Alibaba’s Dingtalk is available on both desktop and mobile.

The team at Alibaba Group which developed Laiwang, the messaging app aiming to supplant Tencent’s WeChat, has stealthily launched a team collaboration app named Dingtalk, or Dingding.

Dingtalk is more like a WeChat app for business, enabling staff to search for colleagues and conduct one-on-one or group chats. With several Chinese tech companies, including WeChat and TouchPal, having recently developed apps for VoIP calls or added the feature to their existing apps, it’s no surprise to find free voice calls included in Dingtalk. The app has also integrated FaceTime.

Facing unclear regulations, Xiaomi can’t guarantee the release of 4G smartphones in Indonesia

After the launch of 4G LTE mobile networks in Indonesia by three of the nation’s largest telcos, cheaper access to 4G should presumedly serve as a strong incentive for smartphone manufacturers like Xiaomi to sell compatible devices in the archipelago. But it’s not that simple for the company’s VP of international Hugo Barra, local media portal Detik reports.

While Xiaomi plans to introduce the 4G compatible Mi Note to Indonesia during the second quarter of this year, the Chinese company still feels hesitant due to the archipelago’s unclear regulations, according to Detik. As Indonesia’s government believes that the nation imported too many goods last year, it’s possible that brands like Xiaomi might experience painful taxations from the government to sell their 4G devices inside the country.

Local media portal Liputan 6 reports that three of Indonesia’s ministries have been in talks about regulating the sale of 4G LTE devices in Indonesia. The proposition that is arguably the most damning for Xiaomi is that 40 percent of all 4G mobile devices marketed inside the country should be manufactured inside the country, according to the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology (ICT). Indonesia’s ICT minister Rudiantara says the regulation will go into effect by 2017. In the meantime, this would allow Xiaomi to start selling 4G devices in Indonesia, but would create big problems for the company further down the line.

While Indonesia still has the lowest internet penetration rate in the region, it already has the largest online population, indicating huge future growth potential.

As Indonesia becomes an important smartphone market, brands rush to open factories

Indonesia is one of the biggest smartphone markets in the world. Emarketer believes that the nation will have over 100 million active monthly smartphone users by 2018 as it leaps other countries to become the fourth largest market. As this evolution happens, Indonesia is also set to be an important and strategic place for brands to manufacture smartphones.

Indeed, it’s happening already, and other factors are helping to accelerate the growth. Labor costs in Indonesia are relatively low. The country’s annual minimum wage is US$1,163, below China’s US$2,472. Furthermore, the Indonesian government is implementing new policies that heighten the cost to import phones, while at the same time it lowers the barriers to setting up a smartphone factory.

In 2013, Indonesia imported US$2.6 billion worth of smartphones, and that number will keep on increasing. Naturally, the government wants to convert some of that money to revenues made within the country.

A number of homegrown and overseas phone companies have set up facilities in Indonesia, while others are planning on doing so. These run the length of the supply chain, from major component manufacturers to actual smartphone brands. Here’s a list of the main players.

International brands

1. Oppo

China-based Oppo is attacking the Indonesian market very aggressively. The company has put in US$30 million to buy an old factory on the archipelago and revamp it into an assembly plant. The facility, which will become Oppo’s first outside China, is located in Tangerang, just outside of Jakarta, and will be fully operational by mid-2015.

Oppo aims to assemble 500,000 smartphones every month from its Indonesian factory.

Haier has put in US$1 million to expand the production line in its plant in Indonesia. The factory will soon assemble 200,000 smartphones each month.

ZTE claims that Indonesia is its biggest market and it plans to invest heavily by building a smartphone factory near the airport in Jakarta. However, there are no further details at this early stage.

Although the South Korean giant has repeatedly stated its interest in building a factory in Indonesia, the plan has yet to come to fruition. The latest update, from Indonesia’s indusry ministry representative, says that Samsung plans to start assembling smartphones in Indonesia this month. The report states that Samsung has brought some machinery and an R&D team to Indonesia.

Samsung is reportedly keen to produce as many as 900,000 phones per month in the plant in West Java – but it will start off with 100,000 units per month once the factory is completed.

The company claims that it can produce up to 750,000 smartphones and tablets each year. All of Axioo’s phones are assembled in Indonesia, though they use a number of Chinese-made parts. Axioo says that its mobiles are made up of 30 percent Indonesian components at present.

The company wants to put in more local components in the next few years.
