陸上自衛隊北富士演習場の入会権を主張し、長年にわたり国や県と闘争を続けてきた「忍草母の会」で事務局長を務めた天野美恵さん＝忍野村忍草＝が亡くなり、７日、富士吉田市内で告別式が行われた。８５歳だった。美恵さんは母の会の中心的な存在で、かすりもんぺにすげがさ姿で、先頭に立って「先人たちの土地を返せ」と訴え続けた。闘争は指導者だった天野重知氏、母の会会長の渡辺喜美江さんらシンボル的なリーダーが相次いで世を去ったことで衰退し、３年前に活動を停止した。「忍野村のために闘ってきたので、後悔はないが、若い世代が闘争の歴史を知らないことが悔しい」。北富士闘争の“最後の生き証人”は最後まで歴史の風化を懸念していた。

Ms.Mie Amano (Shibokusa, Oshino Village), the ex-executive director of “Mothers of Kitafuji Shibokusa,” who committed her life to the long struggle against the national and local government for their commonage in Japan Ground Self-Defense Force Camp Kitafuji. Her farewell ceremony was held on 7th in Fujiyoshida. She was 85 years old. Mie has been a pillar of “Mothers of Kitafuji Shibokusa”, who led the affray. In traditional peasant women's baggy trousers and with a sedge hat, she led the appeal, “Give us our ancestral land.” The strife declined in strength as Mr. Shigenori Amano, the ex-leader, and Ms. Kimie Watanabe, the chairperson of Mothers of Kitafuji Shibokusa, passed away, and their activities stopped three years ago. “All my struggles were for our Oshino Village, which I have no regret about,” she said, “Just frustrated by the young generation's ignorance about the history of our struggles.” The last living witness worried to the death about the fading history.

Because they are more economically secure, they do not need many children to help support the family. Furthermore, these parents can afford better health care so the infant mortality rate is low. Thus, in affluent families, children are healthier, receive better education, and have better career options. Not surprisingly, data shows that these families have fewer children on average. Germany and Japan are examples of affluent societies with low birth rates.

Because people living in poverty have less food to eat, malnutrition and diseases are common, and the infant mortality rate is high. Consequently, to replace the many children who die young, poor families have more children. What is the "cycle of poverty?"

How are population and poverty connected? Poverty and wealth are closely linked to many intertwining factors, for example, population growth and destruction of the environment. As population increases, there are fewer resouces such as food, water, and fuel to adequately support everyone. To make ends meet, poorer people tend to have larger families. In rural areas especially, many children are needed to work in the fields, fetch water, and gather firewood just to survive.

人口と貧困はどのように結びつきあっているのだろうか。貧困と富とは互いに絡み合った多種多様な要素ーーたとえば、人口増加と環境破壊などーーと密接に結びついている。人口が増えれば、人口のすべてを十分に支えるための食料、水、燃料などの資源が少なくなる。それでも何とかやっていくために、貧困層の家庭は大家族になりがちである。とくに農村部では大勢の子供が畑作や水汲み、薪集めをしなければただ生きていくことすらできない。
