Post Sequoia funding, DAILYHOTEL gears up for November's global launch

The last-minute hotel booking app from South Korea has already started work on Singapore, Bangkok and Hong Kong

South Korean last-minute hotel booking app company DAILYHOTEL recently announced that it has raised an undisclosed amount from Sequoia Capital, according to beSUCCESS.

The report noted that this is Sequoia’s second investment into a Korea-based company, the first being e-commerce firm Coupang.

Speaking to Audrey Khoo, Local Director and Regional Manager, DAILYHOTEL’s first and only employee in Singapore, e27 understands that the company is preparing for its global launch in mid-November.

“We plan to do more hires, because we want to set up call centres,” she told this author. “For sure, we have to do hires.”

At the moment, the call centres operated by DAILYHOTEL are made up of mostly Korean speakers, with a handful that can support English enquiries.

Why Singapore?

In the coming months, users will see that DAILYHOTEL has set up Singapore as a base for overseas expansion.

Khoo said that Korea and Singapore share many similar characteristics, including buying attitudes and consumer preferences.

Other characteristics shared by Korea and Singapore are high smartphone penetration and strong mobile Internet. “To use a mobile app, you need to have good infrastructure,” she said.

Y Combinator (YC), the Silicon Valley-based startup accelerator and seed fund, has answered a question it says it gets asked a lot: What is the fundraising and valuation status of all startups that have come through its doors?

Launched in 2005 by Paul Graham, Trevor Blackwell, Jessica Livingston, and Robert Morris, YC initially ran two programs — one in California, and one in Massachusetts. The latter of these closed in 2009.

Over the past 10 years, YC has funded and helped kickstart 940 startups, including Airbnb, Dropbox, Reddit, Instacart, and Coinbase. Though many startups enter YC for the mentoring, the accelerator also invests $120,000 for 7 percent equity in the companies.

Sam Altman, the Y Combinator president who replaced Paul Graham in 2014, has published some numbers that help demonstrate the role the accelerator has played in giving startups their big break. Though he is probably right when he says that “these are very imperfect indicators of success.”

Though it was not included in the official dataset, Altman did take to Twitter to reveal that almost a third of the 940 companies it has funded have since closed.

Digging into the numbers, YC companies have raised $7 billion to date, with a combined total value of $65 billion. Eight of these companies are valued at more than $1 billion, which transports them into the much-coveted “unicorn” status, while 40 are valued at more than $100 million.

To have eight so-called “unicorns” out of a cohort of 940 is pretty impressive. And if you’re wondering what these companies are, well, you’ll no doubt know most of them:

・Airbnb: The peer-to-peer home rental service is worth $25 billion, after a $1.5 billion raise in June.

・Dropbox: The cloud storage service is worth $10 billion, off the back of a $250 million funding round last year.

・Docker: The enterprise-focused open-source “container” startup raised $95 million in April, valuing the company at $1 billion.

・Machine Zone: The game developer was reportedly valued at $3 billion following a raise last year.

“Not just saying, this wasn’t easy. However, just because there isn’t a revenue model or strategy being implemented does not mean that Oh and his Co-founders have not thought about it, or that the company will always stay this way. In the distant future, there might be ways for MangoPlate to generate money from revenue-share models that see it share its platform or resources with food-related services, like delivery. Or the company might go into other industries like beauty.

Future plans

“I’m hoping that once we dominate this category, we can easily go into beauty, medical, like nails (or) hair, anything that requires a mobile service, and I want to get my curtains installed, I have no idea where and I want them (users) to be able to trust the recommendations and reviews that are coming in!” says Oh.

Most people rely on the dominant search engine Naver and its blogs or their friends to find out where they should get their cars serviced or the next trendy pet cafe, which can be tedious. “When we first started, we were like, “Should we do discovery? Delivery? Reservation and all that.” And we thought we wanted to do all that at once, but discovery in itself is a massive market. So we need to actually dominate that space, and that goes into adjacent markets… but delivery in particular, I would say that we would partner existing players, more or less, just because there’s such great incumbents and I’m very satisfied with their service.

Because it’s a very transparent and easy move from where we are into the reservation space,” Oh concludes.

But for now, it’s restaurants and South Korea that has got MangoPlate’s hands full.

When I first arrived in Seoul, the shiny capital of South Korea, finding restaurants that I like proved especially difficult. Crowd-sourced reviews were not a thing. It was trial and error, expat Facebook groups and having locals recommend restaurants to me.

A few weeks ago, I caught a serendipitous Lyft with a particularly chatty driver. Normally, I keep to myself when Lyfting around town, but somehow we started talking, and I mentioned that I was headed to a conference to present my biggest marketing screw-ups. He chuckled and told me, “Smart men learn from their mistakes; wise men learn from other people’s mistakes.” A few minutes later, I got out at my stop and thanked him for giving me a great opener for my speech.

While most of the news about Zenefits focuses on our incredible growth, we — like any company — have made our share of mistakes; mistakes you’d be wise to learn from. Just take it from Mr. Lyft Driver.

Here are the top five marketing mistakes we made early on at Zenefits.

Mistake 1: We stopped doing things that didn’t scale.

Most incubators — Y Combinator in our case — encourage startups to get to market faster by building products that don’t scale (at first). No one really encourages you to do the same from a marketing perspective, but it actually holds true.

In our early days, I developed a marketing campaign that was an amalgamation of dynamic content and data. It ended up being hugely successful and contributed to a decent chunk of our first year revenue. Then, one day, Parker Conrad (Zenefits’ cofounder and CEO) came to me and said, “Great! We’re going to go from three salespeople to 10. Now, we need to scale this campaign. Let’s do every industry. Every vertical.”

I immediately told him there was no way we could scale the campaign because it would require too much data and customization. So instead, I took the easy way out and created a “scaleable” campaign by using pre-baked, non-dynamic content that would work across every industry.

Two and a half years later, we have more than 100 people pulling industry data and feeding it into a custom app we built in-house, all to make this campaign work at scale.
