Kyocera’s Demos Tactile Feedback Touchscreen Buttons at CEATEC [VIDEO]

When we visited Kyocera at CEATEC Japan last week, we had a chance to try out the company’s ‘New Feeling Touch Panel.’ It’s a haptic feedback touchscreen that makes pressing a flat surface feel like pushing a regular button.

The demonstration included a variety of buttons, such as a jelly type, clickable, or buzzer style buttons. The buttons can also be assigned levels of depths, meaning that you could do a half push or a full push with two assigned levels. In the demo we saw (see video below) we got to try seven levels of depth, which was amazingly cool.

先週CEATECジャパンで京セラを訪ねたとき、私たちは同社の「新感覚のタッチパネル」を試してみるチャンスがあった。これは、平たいパネルを触っても普通のボタンを押しているかのような触感をフィードバックするタッチスクリーンだ。

デモには、ゼリータイプ、クリック感、ブザースタイルなどのいろいろなボタンがあった。ボタン深さレベル、つまり半押し感や奥まで完全に押した感じの２つのレベルも割り当て可能だ。デモ（下の動画）では、７段階の深さレベルを試すことができたが、驚くほどクールだった。

According to Kyocera, this new touch panel “uses vibration to excite the nerves in the finger to illicit a quasi tactile feeling.” The screen uses a piezoelectric element to create this tactile feeling.

Of course, one of the current knocks against many of today’s touchscreen devices is that they lack a tactile feeling. My personal pet peeve is the virtual keyboard on an iPad, which I find tricky to use. Whether or not a technology like this could actually improve that experience is not clear to me, but I have my fingers crossed that someday it might

もちろん、現在あるタッチスクリーン機器の多くは叩いても触感がないという問題がある。私が個人的にイライラするのは、非常に使いにくいiPadのバーチャルキーボードだ。このような技術が実際に改善されて触感がはっきり体験できるようになるのかならないのかわからないが、なってほしいと願っている。

Zynga’s Project Z Network No Threat to Facebook For Now

Zynga’s newly-christened “Project Z” (or “Zynga Direct,” to hear CEO Mark Pincus tell it) is a forthcoming social games platform and social network enabled through Facebook Connect. It is also, some say, Zynga’s bid for independence from Facebook — but the details of the platform don’t support the claim any more than Zynga’s own behavior in the past year.

For nearly two years, the world has been watching for signs of trouble in the relationship between one of the world’s largest social networks and its largest third-party developer. Seventeen months ago, there were spats about Facebook Credits integration, sudden platform changes that curbed viral growth for social games, and even rumored threats that Zynga would quit the platform.

But in all this time, Zynga hasn’t actually done anything to cut ties with Facebook.

If anything, the ties are deepening as Zynga prepares an initial public offering based mostly on the strength of its revenues from Facebook players. According to statements made by Pincus and Zynga COO John Schappert at today’s Unleashed event in San Francisco, Project Z is enabled with Facebook Connect at a level of integration so deep that Facebook is actually a “launch partner” for the network. Zynga also supported Facebook’s launch of its mobile platform with three HTML5 games based on its most popular franchises. And with each new game release, Zynga seems to showcase more and more of Facebook’s newest social game features well before other social game developers even begin to experiment with them.

It seems that the special relationship referenced in S-1 documentation filed by Zynga continues even as Zynga expands its reach to other networks.

Even if Project Z launched tomorrow and Zynga’s IPO were delayed into Q2 2012, the idea that Zynga could somehow be completely independent of Facebook by that time is ridiculous. Facebook is Zynga’s primary source of traffic and no other social network or games portal in the United States is in a position to cut Zynga any kind of deals that would yield comparable numbers. There is the idea that Facebook could abruptly change its terms of service with social game developers in a way that would hurt Zynga’s revenues — but why would Facebook do that when it has spent the last year trying to rebuild and nurture its social games ecosystem?

Mobile Location Based Games to See Massive Growth in Japan

Location based services (LBS) garnered quite a bit of attention last year with new services like Foursquare and Gowalla battling over market share in America. While the hype over these services has lessened, LBS growth in Japan has not. Seed Planning, a market research and consulting firm, has published a report projecting market growth for mobile LBS in Japan. The research company estimates a 340 percent increase between 2010 and 2015.

The LBS market accounted for 43 billion yen (560 million USD) in 2010 and is expected to expand to 147 billion yen (1.9 billion USD) by 2015. That growth, while substantial is not too surprising. Increase in LBS demand is roughly in line with anticipated smartphone adoption over the next few years. However, a closer look shows that the market isn’t growing simply due to an increase in smartphone users.

LBSマーケットは2010年には430億円（5億6,000万USドル）を占め、2015年までには1,470億円（19億USドル）に拡大すると見込まれている。この成長は本質的に驚くべきものではない。LBSにおける需要は今後数年に見込まれるスマートフォン採用とほぼ足並みが揃っている。しかし、よく見てみると、このマーケットはスマートフォンユーザーの増加だけで成長しているわけではないことがわかる。
