China Groupon and FTuan Merge to Form New Company, GroupNet

Following the announcement of a business merger between China deals sites, Gaopeng, Groupon’s service in China, and FTuan, the new holding company will be rebranded with a new logo (pictured right) and name. GroupNet will essentially merge the two platforms and be run by top management from both FTuan and Gaopeng.

Tencent will also take up 30 percent of the new company’s shares, with FTuan’s CEO, Lin Ning, overseeing the new company’s operations. Both Gaopeng and FTuan websites and branding will remain as they are.

Innovation Works Obtained $150M for Second Fund

Chinese incubator Innovation Works (IW) recently announced that it has completed raising US$ 150 million for its second fund “Innovation Works Development Fund II”. Last September IW finished its first internet-focused fund, obtaining a total of $180million. IW also revealed that its Shanghai branch will be opening soon.

Innovation Works was set up in late 2009 by former Google China head Kai-Fu Lee, focusing on early-stage high-tech investments. Out of its 50 investment portfolios, 18 secured Series A funding with two approaching the end of raising Series B. Currently there were 3 projects were deemed as failure, that’s how IW came up with a “95% of success”.

Days ago, Kaifu Lee was busy rebuffing the rumor that the incubator held too much stakes in the startups it invested into. Lee claimed that IW holds an average 17.6% of shares in its 50 investment portfolios.

[Simply Business] The Hidden Enemy

Business is a battle and to succeed in the battleground, you need to know who you’re fighting against. Sometimes it’s as plain as day but some of them are lost in obscurity. We all know the direct competition between Pepsi vs. Coca-Cola, Mercedez Benz vs. BMW and others. Direct competitors are the ones whom you fight directly, selling the same services or products as you are, and are in the same market space.

What about the indirect ones? The enemy that’s not in your immediate industry but can substitute or even replace you entirely. The example of this would be Web designers vs template makers. Web designers tend to do projects for a living and yet people can also buy templates and modify it themselves fairly easily. Templates are cheap and modular and can be used countless of times while Web designers offer more custom solutions with higher costs.

If Web designers don’t adapt to the situation they might ended up losing valuable projects and go out of business. Web designers can adapt by also making templates but still offering a custom solution to the clients that need more than just a template. If you only look at your direct competitors, you might not see this coming.

Another interesting example is Starbucks vs espresso machine makers. Starbucks sell coffee while an espresso machine is a coffee maker. One is in food and beverages while the other is in retail and manufacture, but both are in the same market space and are fighting for market share. It’s fairly obvious though, that making your own coffee is cheaper than going to Starbucks or even McDonald’s. Speaking of that fast-food joint, Starbucks is also competing with McDonalds over coffee. Again, not a direct competitor but a worrisome competitor nonetheless.

The Biggest Brands on Social Media in Southeast Asia [INFOGRAPHIC]

Social media marketing is something that brands need to do right – especially as it’s often a shortcut to the hearts and wallets of a nation’s youngest and most engaged consumers. And although there’s more to this marketing strategy than sheer numbers, here’s a neat infographic showing the biggest brands in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, and the Philippines on four important platforms: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Youtube.

Made by the folks at Thailand-based social analystics firm ZocialInc, it’s concocted using data from its ZocialRank system. The infographic shows that Thailand has the greatest number of high-ranking brands on social media (86 brands), and that the most liked/followed brand in the region is the Bali-based clothing retailer Surfer Girl, which is apparently living up to its claim of being a fun brand. It’s also got some killer social skills. Global brands in the top 10 include motorbike-maker Yamaha, AirAsia, BlackBerry, Nescafé, and Starbucks.

Given my obsession with language learning, the fact that it hadn’t been done yet, and that I was young as I’d ever be, I thought it was the right opportunity at the right time.

The team behind FluentFlix is small but dedicated, and apparently they’re churning out videos like there’s no tomorrow. When I asked Park about the slim video selection and somewhat outdated news videos, he told me:

I downloaded the Android app and took it for a little spin, although as a male I don’t really have the, ahem, hardware to properly assess it. And, of course, since Vibease’s actual hardware (a bluetooth vibrator) isn’t out yet, for now the app just vibrates your phone. But of course, the point of this whole thing is that it allows partners to play remotely, and in the in-app chat, partners can create customized vibration patterns. That isn’t going to be too useful just yet either — I’m guessing it’s hard to masturbate with and chat on a phone at the same time — but once that bluetooth vibrator comes out, this app is going to be something every couple should be interested in.

We’re looking forward to hearing from Vibease when the vibrator hardware is finally ready for launch. It sounds like that should be pretty soon. But until then, enjoy this over-the-top video advertisement for Vibease:

Tencent Has A Tiny Gadget For Weixin Lovers, An Earphones With a Push-to-Talk Button

With over 100m users and dramatic growth, Weixin is becoming a life style for Chinese like people here indulging in QQ. Tencent is not only looking at the big picture of Internet TV market by bringing you the iCE Screen, but also working on some tiny things which may make your digital life more easier.

Weixinは、１億人のユーザーを抱え劇的に成長しており、ＱＱに夢中になってのめりこむ人もいるなど中国人のライフスタイルの一つになっている。TencentはiCEスクリーンに人々をひきつける、というインターネットテレビ市場を見据えているだけでなく、デジタルライフをもっと楽にするような細かいことにまで気を配っている。

It all centers around QR codes, which are readable within the WeChat app. QR codes are easily created by anyone within the app, and can be shared on the web or printed out. Now, with this new focus on using it for marketing, it’s a tool for brands as well. Possible future uses include dishing out discount coupons to loyal and engaged customers. This means that companies now need to consider WeChat as a means of reaching out to Chinese consumers.

To test this out, I went to Chinese-language tech blog iFanr.com and scanned its new WeChat QR code. Now I’ve friended – or followed – the site on WeChat, and it occasionally sends out a mass message to everyone who follows:

Thankfully iFanr has been nice and just sent me two messages over the course of two days. But, in theory, this whole marketing push could be used to spam users directly on their phones.

At the moment, though, the whole system is rather over-reliant on those QR codes. There’s no good way to search for all these brands, blogs, and celebs within the WeChat app, so you’ll need to find and snap that QR elsewhere on the web. It’s conceivable that Tencent will add some kind of discovery portal within the app soon. With that in place, the group messaging app will have taken a clever – if somewhat odd – step forward in becoming a lot more like Weibo.

But the WangXin app still can be used for fun stuff, so it works fine for friends keeping in touch as well – just like with local rivals such as Tencent’s Weixin, or Xiaomi’s own Miliao app. In addition, the revamped WangXin app has a location-based service (LBS) for finding fellow users nearby (pictured right) – just like Weixin’s.

Alibaba is expecting the reborn apps for Android and iPhone to have 15 million users by the end of the year. While that’ll be far off the 100+ million that have signed up for Weixin, it’d be quickly gaining on Miliao’s 17 million.
