Without doubt, part of the reason for Australia’s success in design crowdsourcing is its proximity (and affinity) with Asia, whose users helping drive growth in these marketplaces.

In summary, design crowdsourcing is blooming in Asia and Asia is, arguably, the leader in design crowdsourcing. This is one of the reasons late last year we launched DesignCrowd in Singapore, the Philippines and India, and why we’ll continue to invest in the region. It’s also why we’re now seeing Asian focussed crowdsourcing events like Crowdsourcing Week (to be held in Singapore in June this year). Online business in Asia is booming and the crowdsourcing model is flourishing, propelling the region to the status of a global leader in innovation and growth.

In recent years, we’ve begun to see online industries and websites in Asia outdo their Western equivalents. For example, online gaming. China’s Tencent is outgunning its US equivalent Zynga (Tencent was founded in 1998 – well before Zynga – and makes four times as much revenue).

Design crowdsourcing is booming in Asia. In particular, design crowdsourcing (a crowdsourcing vertical that involves crowdsourcing tasks like logo, graphic and web design) is thriving.

近年、アジアでのオンライン産業やウェブサイトが欧米でのそれらを凌ぐ様子が見られ始めた。例えばオンラインゲームだ。中国のTencentは米国の同業者Zyngaを越えつつある（TencentはZyngaよりずいぶん早い1998年に創設されたが、Zyngaの4倍もの収益を上げている）。

デザインクラウドソーシングがアジアでブームとなっている。とりわけ、デザインクラウドソーシング（ロゴ、グラフィック、ウェブデザインなどのクラウドソーシングタスクをまとめて取扱うクラウドソーシング）が成長している。

I operate DesignCrowd.com (a global design crowdsourcing website based in Australia, that recently launched in Asia) and, so we can see first hand this explosion in both sides of the two-sided marketplace that is crowdsourcing — businesses and designers. We’re seeing huge surges in crowdsourcing work in and from China, India, the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore and Pakistan.

There’s a case to be made that the Asian region is leading the world in design crowdsourcing. While you be seeing this new industry flourishing, here are five facts about crowdsourcing in Asia that you may not have known.

私はDesignCrowd.com （オーストラリアを拠点とし、最近アジアでの事業を開始した国際的デザインクラウドソーシングサイト）を運営しているため、クラウドソーシングという2つの面を持つマーケットの両面（会社側とデザイナー側）で起きているこのブームを身をもって理解できるのだ。私たちは中国やインド、フィリピン、インドネシア、シンガポール、パキスタンにおける、またそれらの国々から発信されるクラウドソーシング事業の急激な高まりを感じている。

アジアがデザインクラウドソーシングにおいて世界をリードしているのはもっともなことだ。この新しい産業の繁栄を目の当たりにしていても、アジアのクラウドソーシングについて知られていないかもしれない以下の5つの事実がある。

1) Design Crowdsourcing Originated in Asia

While the term crowdsourcing was coined in 2006, the act of crowdsourcing has existed for decades (if not centuries). There are various crowdsourcing timelines and various theories on the origins of crowdsourcing. The earliest example of design crowdsourcing that I’ve been able to find occurred in Japan. In 1936, Toyota crowdsourced its logo and received 27,000 entries. This contest remains a world record, in terms of response. Toyota remains a huge proponent of crowdsourcing, and in 2013 it will host its 7th annual crowdsourced Dream Car Design Contest).

1) デザインクラウドソーシングはアジアが発祥である

クラウドソーシングという用語があみ出されたのは2006年だが、クラウドソーシングという活動は数十年（数百年ではないにしても）にわたって存在してきた。クラウドソーシングについては数々の歴史的経緯や起源に関する考えが存在する。私が発見することができた最も古いクラウドソーシングの例は日本で起こったものである。1936年、Toyotaは自社のロゴを不特定多数の人々から募り、27,000件の応募を受けた。このコンテストは、応募数に関しては今なお世界記録となっている。Toyotaは現在もクラウドソーシングの強力な支持者であり、2013年には、7回目となる年に1度のDream Car Design Contestを開催する。

2) India loves crowdsourcing

If you analyse usage of top crowdsourcing sites, you’ll see that prominent top earning users on sites are often from India. For example, more than half of the top 25 earners on Elance.com are from India (and most of them specialise in web design). On our own website, we now have over 100,000 designers. While in total, more designers come from the US than any other country, India has more designers in our top 50 designers than any other country (including the US). In fact, India loves crowdsourcing so much, that in 2010, the government crowdsourced the rupee symbol.

2) インドはクラウドソーシングが大好きである

上位にランクされるクラウドソーシングサイトの利用状況を分析すると、サイトで上位の利益を上げている主なユーザーはインド人だということが分かる。例えば、Elance.comの上位25人の受益者のうち半分以上がインド人である（そして彼らのほとんどはウェブデザインを専門としている）。私たちが運営するウェブサイトでは、現在10万人以上のデザイナーを抱えている。合計すると、デザイナーのうち最も多いのが米国人だが、上位50人のデザイナーに関してはインド人の方が（米国人も含め）どこの国の出身者よりも多い。実際に、インドはクラウドソーシングを大変好んでおり、2010にはインド政府が通貨ルピーのシンボルマークをクラウドソーシングにより募集したほどだ。

3) China has a flourishing design crowdsourcing industry

China is home to some of the largest online outsourcing and crowdsourcing sites in the world. For example, Zhubajie.com claims to have over eight million members. If this is accurate, it would mean Zhubajie has more “workers” than McDonalds (1.9 million) and Walmart (2.1 million) combined. Interestingly, on Zhubajie, a large percentage, if not the majority of projects, seem to be design focussed (with Logo Design and Web Design the top 2 categories on the website).

3) 中国には繁栄を続けるデザインクラウドソーシング産業が存在する

中国はいくつかの世界最大のオンラインアウトソーシングサイトやオンラインクラウドソーシングサイトの本拠地となっている。例えば、Zhubajie.comは800万人以上のメンバーを抱えていると主張している。この数字が正しければ、Zhubajieで「働く人」の数はMcDonalds（190万人）とWalmart（210万人）を合わせた数より多いことになる。興味深いことにZhubajieでは、大多数のプロジェクトとまでは言えないとしても、高い割合のプロジェクトがデザイン（Zhubajie.comの上位2部門であるLogo DesignとWeb Design）に重点を置いているようだ。

4) Asia outranks the rest of the world

Design crowdsourcing is not just popular in India and China. It’s also extremely popular in Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines and even Pakistan, meaning the entire region is very well represented.

If I analyse website traffic to sites like ours (and other crowdsourcing sites) I see an interesting trend. Design crowdsourcing websites are more popular traffic wise (relative to other websites) in Asia than in the west.

4) アジアは世界の他の地域より重要である

デザインクラウドソーシングはインドと中国でのみ人気というわけではない。インドネシアやマレーシア、フィリピン、そしてパキスタンにおいても非常に人気があり、アジア地域全体で人気があるということをよく表している。

私たちのサイト（また他社のクラウドソーシングサイト）へのアクセスを分析すると、興味深いトレンドが覗える。デザインクラウドソーシングサイトは（他のウェブサイトと比較して）、欧米よりもアジアにおいて、より多くのアクセス数を獲得しているのだ。

For example, for our business, DesignCrowd is now approaching the top 10,000 websites in the world (and in the US) based on traffic. However, in Asia, it has already reached the top 7,500 websites in Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines, the top 5,000 websites in India and in the top 1,000 websites in Pakistan. This trend isn’t limited to DesignCrowd, it’s very similar for other crowdsourcing sites and reinforces the relative popularity of these services in Asia (particularly with Internet users – in this case designers – seeking work).

It should be noted, that these countries aren’t just a source of a large quantity of designers but also a source of quality designers. On DesignCrowd, we can see hubs of talented designers emerge around the world. In Asia, we see particularly talented designers in Asia with 60 percent of our top 40 designers coming from India, the Philippines, Indonesia, Pakistan or Malaysia (and our second most successful designer of all time is based in the Philippines).

5) Australia has become a Design Crowdsourcing hub

Australia (part of the Asia Pacific region) has become a global hub and leader in design crowdsourcing.

In fact, design crowdsourcing in Australia is on fire. Globally, there are at least 20 design crowdsourcing websites but Australia is the leader in the space and punches well above its weight with the two largest design crowdsourcing sites coming out of Australia (including, DesignCrowd). Australia is also home to startups Imagebrief (which specialises in photo crowdsourcing) and established design marketplaces like Envato whose WordPress theme marketplace themeforest (just one of their half a dozen marketplaces) has twice the traffic of istockphoto and is now in the top 100 websites in India.

Panoplaza goes global, partners with BrowseWell LLC in America

A Japan-based startup that creates a virtual panoramic view for online stores, Panoplaza has been offering new shopping experiences to customers all over Japan.

Some of the big names include Japanese discount chain store, Don Quijote and departmental store, Daimaru Kobe.

After 2 years of aggressive marketing and presentations at international events such as Startup Asia 2012 & Echelon 2012 in Singapore, Open Web Asia 2012 in China, and ICT Spring 2012 in Luxembourg, Panoplaza has finally announced its success in going global.

Messaging App Cubie Now Available in Indonesian and Three Other Languages

Mobile messaging apps are flooding the market and it doesn’t look like the onslaught is letting up anytime soon. Taiwan-based app Cubie today just announced additional language support which it hopes will expand its user base and connect more people through its network. Today’s announcement adds German, Italian, Indonesian, and Portuguese to the app, making Cubie available in ten languages, and it also updated localizations for Thai and Spanish.

The localization efforts were done through a service called Get Localization which offers a crowd sourced service for startups to translate their apps and services. “We’re extremely pleased to offer an even better messaging service to our users in these markets”, CEO and co-founder Yenwen Feng says, “Response from our users has been fantastic, they’ve done all the hard work themselves. In the future, we hope to crowdsource more languages to reach even more users around the world.”

Cubie, which is just over a year old, currently has 6.5 million users. It crossed the two million mark in July according to The Next Web and was one of last year’s top startups at e27’s Echelon Conferences. Cubie’s user base is made up largely in Asia. Its largest market is Thailand in which it boasts more than one million users and it’s also popular in Taiwan, Malaysia, Singapore, Saudi Arabia, and Hong Kong.

Following the inclusion of Spanish in January however, the app began to reach consumers in Europe and the United States. “Once users in places like Italy and Brazil started to ask about a version in their languages, we realized there was enough people there to do it”, Feng adds. The founders were surprised that Spanish localization helped push the app into the United States although it perhaps shouldn’t be that surprising considering Spanish is among the top languages spoken there.
