Tickled Media, which was recently announced as one of the top startups to watch this year, was recently just named among the World’s most democratic companies to work in by WorldBlu.

Tickled Media, a Singapore-based digital publishing house that operates LiveJournal, theAsianparent.com and Kidlander.com in several Asian markets, was recently selected as the first Singaporean operated company to be certified by WorldBlu, a company specialising in organisational democracy, as a globally recognized democratic workplace. The company, which is supported by Tigris Capital Pte Ltd, a Singapore-based media investment fund, also handles innovative online campaigns for both local and multi-national companies in the region

What are the selection process? Companies become eligible for a spot on the WorldBlu List of Most Democratic Workplaces™ only after its employees complete an assessment evaluating their organisations practice of the WorldBlu 10 Principles of Organisational Democracy™, with an overall combined score of 3.5/5 or higher. The assessment was developed based on a decade of research into what makes a world-class democratic company. Only organisations from the for-profit and non-profit sectors that have been in operation for at least one full year and have five or more employees can apply for WorldBlu certification.

Since they helped transition their company into being a democratic workplace a year ago, Tickled Media has seen an impressive revenue spike of 800 percent. CEO, Roshni Mahtani, explains, “Tickled Media’s democratic practices have made its employees happier. They want to come to work and they take ownership for what they do.”

Blackberry Photo App PicMix Reaches 1 Million Users, Says That’s Faster Than Instagram

We all know that Instagram was bought by Facebook just recently. The photo app craze has reached not only iOS and Android, but apparently Blackberry too. One of the apps trying to catch that crowd, PicMix has reached 1 million users within the last two months, which the founder says puts it on a pace faster than Instagram in its early days.

PicMix, which stands for ‘pictures’ and ‘mixing,’ is all about pictures and photos. You can mix pictures and photos with filters, frames, stamps and ornaments (coming soon) then share it to social networking services such as Facebook, Twitter and BBM. People love to take photos and share it with others, being commented, and liked, especially Indonesian.

We asked the founder about the difference between PicMix and other photography apps:

”ピクチャー”と”ミクシング”を意味する、PicMixは、画像と写真がすべてである。画像や写真をフィルター、フレーム、スタンプ、それに装飾（もうすぐ登場）と掛け合わせて、Facebook、Twitter、それにBBMなどの、ソーシャルネットワーキングサービスで共有できるのである。人々、特にインドネシア人は、写真を撮り、他人と共有し、コメントや、好きを選択されたりすることが大好きである。

PicMix comes with some interesting features. For example there is a Mobile Photo contest, advanced frames, premium frames, stamps, and decors. We also keep enhancing our photo filters. In our next releases, we are adding more analog photography filter and films. All of these features for sure will keep our community excited and engaged. So far, we have successfully maintained the ‘stickiness’ factor in this community.

In short, it is [similar to] Instagram but with a more personal touch to cater most users needs and most of all, the user uses PicMix to express their creativity with the tools.

So far they have over 7.5 million photos uploaded by more than 1 million members with 32,000 new members signing up every day. 40 percent of the members are coming from Indonesia, with Venezuela in the runner-up position with 10 percent. South Africa is next with nine percent.

They will have to fight it out with BibbyCam as the Instagram for Blackberry. But personally I’ve been playing around and posting some pictures with PicMix for now!

The Average Chinese Smartphone User Makes $12,698 Per Year

Smartphone usage in China has exploded over the past few years. This year, China finally blew past the US to become the biggest consumer of smartphones, making up 20.7 percent of the global smartphone market to America’s paltry 20.6 percent. But even though many of them are made in China, these phones don’t come cheap. A recent ProsperChina survey found that smartphone users in China, on average, make about 80,000 RMB per year ($12,698).

But it’s worth noting that Chinese users typically pay much less for phone service than, say, Americans. Moreover, many Chinese smartphone users opt for cheaper 2G service rather than springing for pricier 3G plans.
