“Back then, I witnessed Amazon, eBay, and Yahoo’s phenomenal growth in the Internet world. That got me very inspired and motivated to do one myself,” said Tanaka. But like most aspiring entrepreneurs, he didn’t jump straight in. “I wanted to work and gain some experience first,” he noted.

Hungry to learn and succeed

Tanaka graduated in March 1999 from Nihon University. Within a month he was recruited by So-net Entertainment Corporation, which is a Sony Internet service provider affiliate. That job didn’t last very long, though.

“I enjoyed my time at So-net, but I thought I needed a change to a more startup-like environment and culture. So-net is too large of a corporation to learn how to run a business,” Tanaka remarked. After ten months at So-net, on February 2000, Tanaka joined Rakuten as employee number 50.

When Tanaka joined, Rakuten — now one of the world’s biggest and most successful e-commerce sites — was just a three-year old venture. As he explains, it provided him with “very good exposure in managing a startup.” At Rakuten, Tanaka had a chance to challenge his abilities:

今では、世界でも有数のeコマース大手になった楽天だが、田中氏がジョインした時は、まだ設立3年目のベンチャー企業だった。田中氏の説明によると、楽天で過ごしたことで、新規企業の経営手腕に触れることができのだ。また、田中氏は、楽天で自分の力量を試すチャンスにも恵まれたのだ。

“Besides my technical role, on Rakuten’s range of products, I also managed online product reviews, the blog network, and affiliate marketing… the marketing stuff,” he explained.

Tanaka spent a good four years at Rakuten and was part of the team that witnessed the Japanese e-commerce giant listed on JASDAQ in April 2000, the rollout of Rakuten Travel in 2001, the acquisition of Infoseek Japan K.K and DLJSecurities in 2003.

All this would prove useful when Tanaka started his own empire.

Billion-dollar hobby

While Tanaka was focused on his job at Rakuten, he was also a keen observer of what was taking place outside of Japan. In 2003, he was inspired by Friendster, the popular social network with a large number of users from both the US and Asia. Tanaka was fascinated by the online social networking concept as the possibilities and growth seemed limitless. That sparked his entrepreneurial instinct, and he began to wonder if there was any way to bring the social networking concept to the Japanese market.

Around the end of 2003, I started doing the programming myself, developing the first version of GREE. It was just a hobby to me… And I only launched GREE as a social networking site on February 2004.

The traffic brought Tanaka an unexpected problem though. Tanaka discovered that he needed to hire someone to manage his server to keep GREE up and running. His new network could no longer remain just a hobby. After tasting early success, Tanaka was determined to take the next step, and that necessitated that he quit Rakuten and channel all his energy towards building GREE. In December of 2004 he left Rakuten and began his journey as a full-time entrepreneur.

GREE Inc. is born

しかしトラフィックは予期せぬ問題を引き起こしたのだ。GREEを正常に運営するためのサーバーを管理する人を雇う必要がある事が分かった。彼の新しいネットワークはもはや道楽の域を超えていたのだ。初期段階の成功を味わった田中氏は、次のステップに移るために楽天を辞め、全てのエネルギーをGREEの開発に注ぎこんだのだ。2004年の12月に楽天を去り、フルタイムの事業家として歩み始めたのだ。

To expand quickly, Tanaka needed fresh funds to hire talent. In June of 2005, Globis Capital Partners invested 100 million yen (about US$1.3 million at today’s rates) in his venture. The funding allowed him to hire and expand his office space. Tanaka reflected on his fund raising experience:

" In 2005 and 2006, investors were looking out more for online search businesses in Japan. They were influenced by Google and Yahoo’s success. So some of them weren’t exactly comfortable investing in a social networking service."

事業拡大を早急に進めるには、優秀な人材を確保するための新たな資金が必要だった。2005年の6月にGlobis Capital Partnersから1億円（現在のレートで$130万）の資金を調達した。その資金で人材を確保し、オフィスを拡張した。田中氏は、昔に得た資金調達の経験を活かしたのだ。

2005年と2006年、Google やYahooの成功の影響で、投資家は日本のオンライン検索ビジネスの方により投機の重きを置いていた。そのため、ソーシャルネットワーキングサービスにはあまり関心を示さない投資家もいた。

Mobile, the future of Internet

With such robust growth, Tanaka still wasn’t satisfied. He told me:

" I always believed that the future of Internet is mobile. Back then I predicted that by 2010, the mobile market will be larger than the web market and that was why we wanted to build GREE to be a mobile-focused social networking service instead."

Even with all the funding and partnerships ongoing, Tanaka already had his mobile plans in the pipeline. However, it wasn’t just a mobile social networking service that Tanaka was planning.

"Just social networking on mobile is boring. We wanted to introduce games to our users. And [gaming was] also planned as a business model for GREE.”

この堅調な成長にも関わらず、田中氏はまだ満足していなかった。彼は、“今後のインターネットはモバイルが鍵だとずっと思っていた。2010年には、ウェブ市場よりもモバイル市場が大きくなると既にその当時に予想していた。なので、モバイルベースのソーシャルネットワーキングサービス向けにGREEの開発を進めたのだ”。と語った。

資金調達や提携関係が進行する中、田中氏は既にモバイル構想も進行させていた。しかし、田中氏が計画していたのは、単なるモバイルソーシャルネットワーキングサービスではなかった。

“単なるモバイルのソーシャルネットワーキングだけではつまらない。我々はユーザーにゲームを提供したかったのだ。そして、ゲームもまた、GREEのビジネスモデルとして計画された。”

Venture Generation: The Latest Startup Incubator in Tokyo

J-Seed Ventures, a Japan-based startup fund, this morning announced Venture Generation, a 180 square-meter startup incubator located in Tokyo. The space is set up for fledgling startups — both local and foreign — to enjoy a co-working space at an affordable monthly rate. Some of the facilities you can expect are WiFi, workstations, office equipment, and also three conference rooms for meetings

日本のスタートアップ基金のJ-Seed Venturesは今朝、東京に誕生したスタートアップ用の至れり尽くせりの180m2の施設、ベンチャージェネレーションに関する情報を発表した。国内外の駆け出しのスタートアップが、お手頃な月額料金で空間を共有しながら働くことができる。WiFi、ワークステーションなどが完備され、オフィス設備や打ち合わせ用に3つの会議室などが用意されている。

More than 25 venture advisers have committed to support Venture Generation members on a voluntary basis. Two of those 25 are Michael Korver, co-founding partner of GVC, and Tetsuya Isozaki, founder of Femto Startup, a hands-on fund that focuses on helping entrepreneurs.

Most importantly, Venture Generation is a mixture of Japanese- and English-speaking environments. The advisers recruited have both Japanese (local) and overseas experience to help startups expand outside of Japan and also help foreign startups that are working in the country.

25人以上ものベンチャーアドバイザーがベンチャージェネレーションのメンバーをボランティアベースで献身的にサポートしているのだ。25人の内の、GVCの共同設立パートナーのMichael KorverとFemto Startupの創設者の磯崎哲也の2人は、ハンズオンスタイルの投資で起業家をサポートしている。

最も重要な事だが、ベンチャージェネレーションでは日本語と英語が入り混じった環境になっている。アドバイザーは、いずれ日本から出て世界で活躍したり、また日本で仕事をしている海外のスタートアップの役に立てる様、日本と海外での両方の経験を持つスタートアップを確保したのだ。

The man behind J-Seed is Jeff Char, a serial entrepreneur and also the founder of J-Seed. Rick and I spoke with him briefly in Tokyo last year where he explained that starting up in Japan is a tough process because of ridiculous rental fees and fixed deposits. Other entrepreneurs in Japan also highlighted the same problem. It’s great to see Jeff and company doing something about it, and hopefully more of such projects can mushroom over time. Other incubation spaces in Tokyo include Samurai Incubator and Crosscoop, the latter of which also has a big co-working space located in Singapore.

私が海外事業部で働くべき人材である理由が二つある。これは非常にシンプルで分かりやすい。
まず1つ目に、自社サービスをセルサイド、ディマンドサイド共にゼロベースの新卒から売っている。現在は、幸運にもアドスタの代理店窓口を他社が25人体制で行っているにも関わらず1人で担当している。これは二月度アドスタ全体売り上げの3分の2以上だ。国内でも私のような社会人2年目は珍しいと言える。2つ目が年齢である。

There are two reasons that explain that I am a qualified person to work for the foreign division.
It is very simple and reasonable. First of all, I was selling our own service to the sell-side and the to the demand-side ever since I was a freshman.
Fortunately, I am handling Adyta alone as an agent, whereas the other company needs a team of 25 people. This account for more than 2/3 of Adasta’s total sales amount for February.

If you’re not talking to your customers, you’re just guessing from a conference room.

I believe RIM has enough of a corporate and government customer base to sustain it through this most difficult period. To recover, the company must precisely identify its customer, make terrific products for it, and orient all of its marketing and messaging toward it. In the meantime, we can all learn from the mistakes that brought the BlackBerry maker to this point.

You remember the Blackberry, don’t you?

もし顧客と直接お話しをしてないなら、それは会議室で想像しているだけに過ぎない。

RIMには、この厳しい時期を乗り越えるのに十分な企業や政府の顧客基盤があると思う。回復するには、正確に顧客を見分け、顧客が満足するすばらしい製品を作り、マーケティングや情報の全てを的確に発信していく必要がある。その一方で我々は皆、BlackBerryメーカーが陥った過ちから学ぶことができる。あのBlackberryを覚えているでしょう。

Successful marketing begins with having a tremendous product or service to market. Nothing happens without this.
2. Build on Strengths Instead of Improving on Weaknesses

I’m constantly telling clients that they should build on strengths instead of trying to improve their weak areas. For RIM, the BlackBerry was a great strength, and they all but abandoned its development and marketing for a year or longer to create the tablet. RIM did this to try to prevent the world from passing it by in the tablet space — which it did anyway. Tragically, as a result of diverting talent, attention, resources, investment and innovation from the BlackBerry to the Playbook, the consumer smartphone world has also passed RIM by.

市場に提供できるすばらしい商品やサービスがあって初めてマーケティングがうまくいく。これがないと、何も始まらないのだ。

2. 弱点を改善するよりは強みを磨く。
弱点を改善しようとするより、強みを磨くべきだと、クライアントにはいつも伝えている。
RIMにとってBlackBerryはかなりの強みであったが、タブレット開発に専念するため、BlackBerryの開発やマーケティングに１年以上も手を付けなかった。世の中がタブレットに移行していく事で、乗り遅れないための戦略だったが、結局は取り残されてしまった。不幸にも、人材、注目、リソース、資産、新しい技術やアイデアをBlackBerryからPlaybookに流用したことで、RIMは消費者向けスマートフォン界からも取り残されてしまった。

It doesn’t matter what business you’re in. If you focus on developing weaknesses, your strengths will atrophy due to neglect. If you want to market well, identify your strengths — products, services, techniques, approaches, relationships — and exploit them relentlessly. This technique overcomes nearly all weaknesses.

3. Gravity Pushes Backwards

If you’ve attained a measure of success, you must continue innovating your products, services and your marketing just to maintain your position. Because you can bet the competition is innovating aggressively, and they’ll pass you by in three seconds if you stop doing the things that brought you success.

あなたが、どんな業界にいようが関係ない。もし、弱点を改善する事ばかりに集中してしまうと、強みを磨くことが疎かになり強みが薄れてしまう。もし、市場にきちんとアピールしたいなら、強み、— 商品、サービス、技術、取組み、関係づくり、を把握し、それらを絶えず利用することだ。この方法で、ほとんどの弱点は克服できるのだ。

３．重力は後ろ向きに働く。
もし、一定の成功を収めていても、現在のポジションを維持するには、絶えず商品、サービスやマーケテンングに新しいものを取り入れ、見直しをかけ続けるべきである。なぜなら、競争相手は間違いなくどんどん改良を加えているので、もしここで成功に至った事柄を止めてしまえば、３秒で競争相手に追い抜かれるだろう。

Work Hard, Work Hard, Work Hard

Independent consultant and ex-Techcrunch writer, Serkan Toto, had a coffee chat with me at Startups in Asia (Singapore). It was fun and that discussion has left a deep impression with me. Serkan said that many Southeast Asian entrepreneurs are not working hard enough, a comment that few would dare to speak on stage.

Some folks mistakenly thought that I was defending Southeast Asia on stage. But my thoughts are actually very much the same as Serkan’s. Entrepreneurs in this region aren’t lazy, but we’re certainly not working hard enough as compared to Chinese and Americans counterparts. This is a personal opinion and may not apply to you, of course.

一生懸命に、そして熱心に、そして精一杯働く。

独立コンサルタントでTechcrunchの前のライターのSerkan Totoと、コーヒーを飲みながらStartups in Asia(シンガポール)で雑談する機会があった。おしゃべりは楽しく、また印象深いものだった。Serkanは、東南アジアの多くの事業家はあまり精一杯働いてないと、人前ではあまり話したくない様な内容のコメントをしたのだ。

会話を聞いた人達は、私は東南アジアの人達を擁護していた様にとったかもしれない。しかし、実際、私の思いはSerkanとほぼ同じである。この地域の事業家は怠け者ではないが、中国やアメリカの相手と比べて、確かにあまり熱心に働いてはいない。もちろんこれは私の個人的な見解で、あなたには当てはまらないかもしれない。

Often there is more talk than actual work being done. That’s the general feeling that I get. More people actually want to be entrepreneurs because it’s cool and they think it is easy to get rich. You can get rich, for sure, but what are the chances? Only a handful know the painful truth that being an entrepreneur isn’t sexy.

大抵、実際の仕事や作業をしているより、会議や交渉事をしている方が多い。これが私が受ける大まかな印象だ。いけてるし、簡単にお金持ちになれると思い、多くの人は、本当に事業家になりたがるのだ。確かにお金持ちになれるかもしれないが、そのチャンスはどれくらいあるのだろうか？事業家が格好いいものではないという、辛い事実を知っている人は、ほんの一握りしかいないのだ。

But the success behind Facebook is the fruit of countless sleepless nights and weekends burned. There’s nothing glamorous if you’re going through it. At Penn Olson, we have had our own humble story so far. We work hard because we want to achieve a vision. And when we hire, working late nights is very much communicated and expected.

Now, if you have read this far and feeling a little guilt within your heart, congrats. It’s never too late. Work hard and push yourself to the limit. Build something for yourself and walk the talk. Otherwise take the other path and climb the corporate ladder if that would make you happier. There’s no shame to any route, but not giving your best is the real shame.

Facebookの成功の裏には、数えきれない程の眠れない日々や週末を費やした努力がある。そこには華やかなものは何一つないのだ。今のところPenn Olsonでも、自身のストーリーには華やかなものはない。我々は、夢の実現のため一生懸命働くのだ。人を雇う際、遅くまで働くことは十分伝えており、そしてそれを期待している。

もし、これを読んで、今、心の中で少しだけでも罪の意識を感じているのであれば、おめでとう。決して遅すぎることはない。限界まで、精一杯働くのだ。何か目標設定して、有言実行あるのみだ。さもなければ、もし出世階段を上る方が幸せに感じるなら、そちらの道を進むことだ。どんな道を選んでも、恥じることはないが、ベストを尽くさなければ、それは恥じることだ。
