After the data is pushed through its algorithms, clients using PlusMargin will be able to determine ‘how likely’ customers are going to buy and can craft notifications accordingly.

Notifications come in the form of offers, which incentivise the customer to buy. Shetty gives the example of offering a customer free shipping for a purchase of US$50.

Unlike their competition, which according to Shetty is primarily rule-based, PlusMargin operates on a more automated basis. “You can think of it as A/B testing versus automated personalisation. We are more into the predictive and data science part instead of trying to do A/B testing,” he says.

This time around, Shetty is a tad more experienced at building a product that people want. Although fresh graduates from Singapore media accelerator SPH Plug & Play, PlusMargin is already beta testing its software with 10 e-commerce clients.

“Traditionally, this technology has only been used on big tech sites like Amazon, but we are giving it to the 99.9 per cent of online retailers that don’t normally have access to this kind of technology.”

On the human resources side, Shetty tells us his plans to set up their entire technical team in Malaysia and attests to the quality of tech talent available being higher than that of Singapore.

“We found that the talent pool for developers is way bigger. We were considering setting up our technical team in India, as I am originally from there, but it’s a four-hour flight versus taking a bus to KL,” he said. “Communication is very important to us. We want to build team culture so interaction with the founders needs to be strong.”

“Affiliate sites account for 15 to 20 percent of ecommerce sales in India, and because the model is performance-based, it is also recognized as a key marketing channel for retailers,” say the founders.

It’s a relatively fresh model for India, a market garnered toward bargains and savings with several successful ecommerce businesses already, and it’s working well for CashKaro. Within a year of its founding, the company crossed the Rs 1.8 crore (approx. US$ 270,000) mark, making them the first and the fastest in India to do so. The company has made a successful foray into India’s now booming mobile platform in 2011, and growth is currently 30 to 40 percent month-on-month.

“I think cashback is exciting because it’s the model that gives the most options to customers,” founder Swati Bhargaya tells Tech in Asia. “I believe that once customers find the site, they don’t need to go out and buy somewhere else.” CashKaro can be a one-stop savings destination, she adds.

Global steps

CashKaro has been compared before to China’s huge daily deals site Meituan as well as online discounts store Fanli, which works on the affiliate links model. There’s also US-based Ebates. Fanli secured a small stake from Japanese ecommerce company Rakuten in April but remains one of the smaller ecommerce stores in China’s booming market. Meanwhile, Meituan merged with Tencent-funded Dianping last month, a testament to the faith the tech titans have in the Chinese group-buying market.

CashKaro is barely two years old, but Swati sees an opportunity for CashKaro to find its own niche in the cashback market.

“We are aiming to be the Ebates and Fanli of Southeast Asia,” she affirms.

But according to the Shanghai State Food and Drug Administration (SFDA), some of China’s O2O food players have been getting a little lax with their standards. A recent investigation found that numerous platforms, including Ele.me, Meituan, and Dianping, had listings with problems like:

・Not displaying the seller’s food service permit
・Listing permits with addresses that led to unlicensed food sellers
・Listing borrowed permits (permits with the name and address of a different food provider than the actual source of the food)
・Listing forged permits (permits with a fake business name and address for the food provider)

The SFDA’s investigation itself doesn’t really pose any threat to companies like Ele.me or Meituan. Ele.me, after all, just raised US$630 million – it can probably afford quite a few US$30,000 fines.

But even the most well-funded companies do have to be afraid of a public food safety scandal. Delivering an order of unsafe food that ends up seriously poisoning a large group of people, for example, is the kind of scandal that could blow up and threaten the company’s core business. A worst case scenario could destroy the company outright: Sanlu was one of China’s biggest and proudest dairy product makers before the 2008 melamine scandal destroyed it so completely that it went defunct.
