How was Spotify’s recent launch in Malaysia, Singapore and Hong Kong? Can you share some numbers?

Our launches in Hong Kong, Malaysia and Singapore have exceeded our expectations in both the response to the free service as well as subscriptions. We aren’t going to discuss numbers but we can reveal that our launches in these three countries are some of the best market launches we’ve seen at Spotify. A lot of this has got to do with the free service that we offer to music fans in these countries.

How is Spotify contributing to the local music industries in these countries?

Most of our users report having paid little to nothing for music before joining, which is typical of younger music fans around the world who largely consume their music through poorly controlled, poorly monetized channels. We’ve grown, and in many cases accelerated, digital and traditional business in every market where we’ve launched.

With this in mind, the developers at Quick Language Learning — or Q.L.L. for short – are taking advantage of mobile devices in teaching language skills and cultural immersion.

Q.L.L. is a company that specializes in developing digital learning apps and content. According to co-founder Lulu Yeh, the team has published over 140 Android and iOS apps targeted at children ages three to eight. These apps are in five languages: Traditional and Simplified Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean and Spanish, reaching over 130 countries.

Lulu says Q.L.L.’s apps fall under three categories: language acquisition, children’s stories and general learning. It’s all about learning, after all, and kids get to benefit from the visual, auditory and touch-based interaction that mobile devices offer.

Traction leads to increased uptake

Q.L.L. has had over 4.5 million downloads to date. “At any given time, we have between 10 to 20 titles on the top 100 app list in the education category for both Google Play and the iTunes store,” says Lulu. She adds that having gained traction so far, Q.L.L. is able to push new titles without having to spend for marketing.

The teams apps earn money from a mix of different revenue models. “Based on our 300,000 active monthly users, we are able to monetize through a combination of mobile ads, paid apps and sponsored apps by Kbro Cable TV (the biggest taiwan cable TV with 1.5 million users), Sony TV, other smart TV boxes and tablet manufacturers.”

Freelancer expands contest platform to include all 600 job categories

With Freelancer opening up its contest platform to all job categories, will this bring crowdsourcing to new heights? Matt Barrie says yes.

Freelancer.com, an online marketplace for, well, freelancers, has now expanded its contest feature to include all 600 job categories. Previously, the contest feature is restricted to just design categories, which has seen interest from both businesses and freelancers.

While these contests usually start from US$30 with the majority under US$500, Freelancer said that the large-scale ones have proven extremely effective. For US$25,000, companies get to use thousands of freelancers to execute a global advertising campaign. Freelancers now get to compete with each other directly and develop a lucrative ongoing professional relationship with the contest holder.

One example from what used to be the design contest platform, Justin Lang from Caringbah, Sydney, received over 900 entries from Freelancer users. He said, “Not only was the contest useful for getting a great logo but I was able to make contact and sort through hundreds of freelancers for projects that I will do in the future. This is invaluable for an employer because I have had these freelancers already show me their skills in the contest!”

China Mobile and Local Banks Launching SIM-based NFC Payment Solution

China Mobile, one of the three Chinese telecom operators, and Shanghai Pudong Development Bank (PDB) jointly launched a SIM-based NFC payment solution. It’s for free for any China Mobile user to replace the SIM card in his/her phone for a NFC payment-enabled one. Now the card is available in three cities, Shanghai, Guangzhou and Changsha. In August PDB will have its branches in 28 provincial regions help users get the new SIM card.

Tapping to pay with such a SIM card-powered smartphone in a convenience store or at a vendor machine is supported by QuickPass POS which is supplied by China UnionPay, China’s bankcard association. There are reportedly 1.2 million such devices in China.

Other services include mobile phone billing and bank account checking. It will support bus, subway and taxi by the end of this year, according to a PDB representative.

The SIM card has been compatible with three more banks, China Merchants Bank, China CITIC Bank and China Everbright Bank, and is capable to store more than 20 bank card details.

PDB rolled out the first mobile payment service in 2011 and now has 900 thousand users making mobile payments with the service. The cooperation with China Mobile must bring PDB users quickly. And the deal couldn’t be possible if China Mobile didn’t dump its self-developed mobile payments technology for the one adopted by China UnionPay and the rest of the world in late 2012.

But still, the one problem is there is a limited number of NFC-enabled phone models.

Here’s how it works: Shoppers can either pick cash-on-collection or the option of paying online and having the item delivered to their house. If they pick the first choice, they can then select their preferred 7-Eleven store. Finally, shoppers will receive an SMS whenever the order is ready for collection upon payment.

According to a Zalora spokesperson, the initiative is ideal for working professionals who have difficulties predicting their schedules due to irregular work hours and unforeseen circumstances.

The company is also in the midst of building its own delivery fleet in order to own the entire customer experience.

Which brings us to Zalora’s recent USD 100M funding round: The money certainly gives the company more flexibility to build up its business. Outsourcing your business to an inadequate partner can be devastating for Zalora, since customers might be more likely to blame the fashion outfit rather than the logistics company.

In the event service providers are unable to meet the demands of Zalora’s huge volumes, at least it has the option of dictating its fate by building capabilities in-house.
