Lesson 2: Most VCs take firm control of decision-making in the companies they fund, which can lead the founders down the wrong path — i.e. away from, rather than toward, their original vision. This is what Byttow indicated had happened in his announcement that he would be shutting down the company he had cofounded.

Lesson 3: We need to question why most VC firms intervene in company decision-making in the first place, when their original decision to fund these startups was presumably based on how effectively the founders had been handling decision-making up to that point. Secret has proved this to be a bad strategy, clearly demonstrating that if the founders’ buttons are pushed hard enough, they may decide to simply walk, allowing the house of cards to come tumbling down. As we know, when this happens, everyone loses.

Lesson 4: Rather than blindly funding entrepreneurs within a VCs’ own circles — only to later learn that in many cases the product was poor and the founders were not leadership material — VCs should invest in startups based on two core values: 1. advancing a revolutionary product and 2. supporting the demonstrated expertise and clearly articulated vision of the company’s founders.

教訓4： ベンチャーキャピタルは自分達の業界内の評判だけでアントレプレナーに投資するべきではない。往々にして製品が使い物にならないものだったり、創業者達が経営リーダーには向いていなかったりするのだ。それよりは、2つのコアバリューに基づいて判断すべきである。1. 革新的な製品を進化させること。2. 投資先の専門性と創業者のビジョンを支援すること。

Final Thoughts
Some view the failure of Secret as “just another day in Silicon Valley” — simply one more example of the uncertainty of venture capital investing. Yet, whether or not the failure was indeed part of business as usual in the Valley, the question still remains: Would we see fewer such days if the current VC funding model were overhauled? The answer is clearly yes!

Monk’s Hill Ventures on departure of team: nothing unusual here

Singapore-based venture capital firm Monk’s Hill Ventures saw a number of key departures recently, specifically partner Stefan Jung and associate Christian Sutardi, reported Singaporean tech blog e27. The news came out just a day before their scheduled May Day party in Jakarta. While the reasons for the departure were not stated in the article, founding partner Kuo-Yi Lim tells Tech in Asia that it wasn’t because of disagreements or an internal spat.

シンガポールに本拠をおくベンチャーキャピタルのMonk’s Hill Venturesでは、最近パートナーのStefan Jung氏とアソシエイトのChristian Sutardi氏など、キーパーソンが退職していたことがわかったとシンガポールのtech blog e27が報告した。このニュースはジャカルタで予定されていたメーデーのパーティーの前日に明らかになった。記事では退職理由は述べられていないが、創業パートナーのKuo-Yi Lim氏はいざこざや内部争論ではないとTech in Asiaに語った。

“It’s always been our philosophy that associate and junior folks look to start their own companies down the road […] they work with us on a two or three year cycle, and then we encourage them to start or join a startup as part of their journey,” says Lim. Both have been with the firm for a year plus.

Sutardi left to start an online customized furniture store called Fabelio. As for Jung, Lim will only say that he’s working on “a few ideas.” Lim further clarifies that Jung was a full-time partner and a rung below founding managing directors Lim and Peng Tsin Ong in terms of decision-making power.

GrabTaxi’s motorcycle service rides into its third city, offers free rides in Jakarta

GrabTaxi today launched its motorcycle taxi service GrabBike in Jakarta, with free rides on offer until the end of this month. Grabtaxi’s motorbike service first appeared in Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi in Vietnam last year, making Indonesia’s capital its third trial destination. It does seem appropriate, given Jakarta’s infamous traffic situation. Informal motorcycle taxis, known as “ojek” in Indonesia, can be found on every street corner.

The thought of entrusting your life to a motorcycle rider might scare the pants of some – ojeks are typically deemed unsafe – but GrabTaxi’s VP of marketing Cheryl Goh is clear that passenger safety is “of utmost importance” to the company. To demonstrate this, GrabTaxi promises to provide medical insurance for all GrabBike passengers and drivers, which is a first for the taxi hailing company. Riders will also be provided with helmets, face masks, hair nets and raincoats.

At the same time, the safety standards that apply to GrabTaxi – safety, reliability, and speed – will also cover its motorcycle hailing counterpart. “It is crucial to us that our users always feel secure and trust us when they engage our services,” Goh adds.

Upon booking confirmation, passengers can share their ride details in real-time with their loved ones via the Share My Ride function of the GrabTaxi app. All rides are trackable, and should anything untoward happen, Goh assures Tech in Asia that they “can quickly and easily track the motorcycle or taxi.”

For now, GrabBike will only pick up customers in Kuningan and Setiabudi, but drop-off destinations can be anywhere within Jakarta. Users can access free rides in the next two weeks simply by selecting GrabBike as the vehicle type in the GrabTaxi app.

GrabBike isn’t the first of its kind in Indonesia. Go-Jek, for example, has been around since 2011, but only early this year launched its Android and iOS apps. Prior to GrabBike’s entry, it was the only ojek startup in Indonesia with its own smartphone app. It has roughly 800 motorcycle riders, and also tracks passengers in real-time via its mobile apps.

“We do still face the challenge of changing the mindset of Indonesians to move away from street hailing and utilize the safer and easier method of e-hailing using GrabBike,” adds Goh. She is, however, confident that users will come once the benefits are realized.

Hong Kong Science & Technology Parks Corporation (“HKSTP”) and Microsoft Hong Kong Limited announced a partnership today that aims to raise the IoT industry in Hong Kong to the world stage, by providing IoT developers with unprecedented support to enhance their product offerings.

This Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) includes the creation of the IoT Innovation Platform and a dedicated cloud-based Data Analytics environment at Hong Kong Science Park.

この覚え書き（MoU）はIoTイノベーションプラットフォームの立ち上げと、クラウドベースの専用データ分析環境をHong Kong Science Parkに用意することが含まれる。

IoT developers: including students, startups, and traditional independent software vendors who want to expand their solution portfolios or add value through IoT, will receive proof of concept support, can consult experts for advice and attend training sessions and will be able to accelerate their development of IoT solutions through cloud services and tools.

“Our collaboration with Microsoft Hong Kong to create the IoT Innovation Platform and Data Analytics environment at Hong Kong Science Park, is a testament to Hong Kong’s unlimited potential as an Internet of Things hub,” said Allen Ma, CEO, HKSTP.

Alibaba Teams Up with Visualead To Combat Counterfeit With ‘New Standard’ Of Visual Codes

Alibaba has teamed up with Israeli-based QR technology company Visualead to release a “new standard” of dotless visual codes for packaging, aiming to crack down on counterfeit products, said Visualead today.

The announcement comes three days after luxury goods company Kering Group submitted its second lawsuit against Alibaba, claiming that the e-commerce giant was not doing enough to stop the sale of counterfeit products on its platform. Visualead currently works with Kering subsidiary Yves Saint Laurent in China, as well as YSL licence-partner L’Oreal.

本発表は高級品メーカーのKeringグループがAlibabaを2度目の提訴に踏み切った3日後のこととなった。提訴の内容は、このeコマースの巨人がAlibabaのプラットフォーム上での偽造品販売に対し十分な対策をとっていないとするものだ。Visualeadは現在Keringグループ子会社のYves Saint Laurent及びYSLのライセンスパートナーのL'Orealと中国で協業中である。

Visualead-partner brands including L’Oreal and Ferrero Rocher are already being sold in China with the new codes on their packaging as part of Alibaba’s new Blue Star platform, which focuses on product engagement and anti-counterfeiting.

“Each product carries a uniques dotless code, and when consumers see this code they will get immediate feedback on whether the product was fake,” Oded Israeli, VP of Marketing at Visualead, told Technode.

“They are much more visual appealing, they have about 90% of their surface as a graphic or image. More importantly is that they are more secure, so that these codes can not be forged.”

Visualeadが提携するブランドにはL'OrealやFerrero Rocherなどがあり、既に新しいコードをパッケージに付けて販売開始している。このパッケージは偽造品防止の取組みに注力するAlibabaの新しいBlue Star platformの一部である。
