China Now Has Over a Billion Mobile Phone Users

We knew it was coming, but now China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology says that it is here: China has broken a billion mobile phone users. According to MIIT statistics, China gained 43 million new mobile users over the first quarter of this year, putting the total number of users at about 1,030,052,000.

Of course, the mobile phone’s gain is a loss for the regular phone, and China’s hard-line phone user numbers dropped by more than a million over the first four months of 2012, putting the total number of wired phone users at about 283,758,000.

中国は今や10億人以上の携帯電話利用者を抱えている。

我々はこれは当然きたるべき事態だと知っていたが、中国産業省および情報技術省が言うにはそれはまさにいまの話である。つまり中国は携帯電話利用者は10億人に達したと公表したのだ。MIITの統計によれば、中国では4,300万人の新規携帯電話利用者が今年の第一四半期で増加しており、合計の利用者数は約1,030,052,000人に達したとのことだ。

もちろん、携帯電話の増加は固定電話の減少につながる。中国では2012年のはじめの4カ月で100万件以上固定電話の利用者が減っており、有線電話の利用者数は合計で約283,758,000人になったとのことだ。

But telecom operators probably aren’t too upset about the loss of wired phone users, because the industry’s total business has grown 14.8% compared to Q1 2011. In total, the industry did more than 419 billion RMB ($66 billion) in business this quarter.

Anyway, while most of those billion mobile phone users are still on feature phones, mobile app developers should get coding right now. The plethora of cheap smartphones China’s likely to see over the next few years (like this one, or this one, or this one, or this one) means that China may well experience a corresponding explosion in smartphone users (whose numbers are already climbing rapidly anyway).

しかし、中国電信の経営者は固定電話利用者の減少にあまり慌てていないようだ。それはこの業界の合計契約取引が2011年の第一四半期に比べて14.8%も増加したためである。結局、この産業は4190億人民元(660億ドル)以上の業績をこの四半期で残したことになる。

とくかく、これら10億人の携帯電話利用者の大多数がフーチャーフォン(いわゆるガラパゴス携帯)を利用しているいまのうちに、携帯アプリの開発者たちはすぐにでもコードを書いてしまうべきである。あと数年で中国では「これか、これか、これか、これ」といったように安いスマートフォンが大量にあふれることになるだろう。これはつまり、中国がそれに応じたスマートフォン利用者の爆発的増加を体験するということである。その数はすでに急速に増えつつある。

And if I incidentally have access to too much irrelevant information while I’m reading news or communicating with friends, I could have been annoyed, just like anyone else will. To make that worse, the current Internet products are all focusing on versatility and multifunction instead of minimalist or simple is beautiful.

ときどき私は自分がとても時代遅れだと感じることがある。新しいサイトをみるためだけにニュースを読みたくなったり、私もSNSアプリを使って友達に連絡を取ってみたいなどと考えるときである。そうしてもし私がニュースを読んだり、友達に連絡をとったりしようとして、副次的にあまりにたくさんの無関係な情報にアクセスしてしまえば、私は他のひとと全く同じように困惑することになるだろう。もっと悪く言えば、現在のインターネットのつくりだす物はみんな最小限に抑えようだとか、簡素の美だとかはなくて多彩で多様であることに集中しているのだ。

Recently Sina’s social magazine Sina View (Sina Shiye) just released a new version to ramp up its social features. Launched earlier this year it only runs on iPad and looks similar to the Sina News mobile app. Now it’s also available for mobiles and PCs.

つい最近に新浪公司のソーシャルマガジン新浪視野は社会面記事を増やした新ヴァージョンを発表した。今年のはじめに始まったこのヴァージョンはiPad上で動作して、見た目は新浪ニューモバイルアプリと同じだ。いまでは他の携帯電話やパソコンでも利用することが可能だ。

Logging in with you Sina Weibo account, you can subscribe to channels you take a like to. Then you’ll see those channels on the right column, the news feeds appear in the middle and the left colum is saved for friends you followed on Weibo. Here in the right column you can also browse your Weibo content. Since the content I followed on Weibo is quite similar to the channels I subscribed to on the View, it feels like much the same. You can also repost articles to Weibo.

1. Acknowledge with Empathy

When it comes to earning trust, it’s not if you answer, it’s how you answer. Recognize the type of feeling your customer is having, and respond in an empathetic, emotionally intelligent way. The worst thing you can do is respond with the attitude that your customers are yet another problem to be solved. They will sense it. For example, if a customer tweets asking for help with a lost password, winning their trust might be as easy as adding an, “I’m sorry” or “that must be frustrating” to the response.
