Croak.It Wants To Be The Voice of the Web

Voice messaging is pretty common nowadays. Chat apps like WeChat and Whatsapp have their own voice messaging feature. There’s also Talkbox that works like WeChat but focuses primarily on voice. And not forgetting Bubbly which is a Twitter-like voice service. All of these voice messaging services are either bound within an app or its own social network.

But Croak.it, a startup from entrepreneurs working in India and U.S., has a more “open” approach towards voice messaging. It allows users of the internet to push and speak on any webpages that uses its API. You can record and then send the voice messages to other social networks. That’s for the web, though. Croak.it can also be incorporated in mobile apps too. One of the company’s representatives told me:

[Developers can use] the API to develop a plethora of voice based applications. For example – if you want to develop the Talking Tom Cat (popular mobile application) functionality, all you have to do is copy paste a two line script from our API and add a third line of code which changes the frequency of the voice returned to you.

There are many other ways in which you can use Croak.it too. A customer could leave a voice feedback to express him or herself better. Blogs like ours can perhaps have voice comments one day. I tried the app myself and in no time there were already a bunch of users who invited me to sing with them. If you ask me why it’s getting so much traction among Filipino users, I’d say it’s simply because Filipinos have this cultural affinity with karaoke and singing together. We don’t miss a chance to sing along with friends at any special occasion. Even restaurants cater to this. So making this functionality available on users’ smartphones through an app is a neat idea and makes it more of a social activity.

More English songs

Duets started its beta for users in the Philippines (where the app is made) last year with only 10 Filipino songs available. As it launched worldwide, the startup also secured global licensing deals with some major song publishers to build the app’s English song library. Ben admits that the biggest challenge to date has been to keep up with all the song requests they’re getting from users.

Right now, Ben says that most of their users are in the Philippines but their fastest growing source of new users is the US.

The startup earlier gained funding from Skype co-founder Tovio Annus. Duets is currently fundraising and plans to expand its song library and add other major languages with the fresh funds. An Android version is also in the pipeline as well as some other social music apps.

The idea of Smart Txtbks was proposed by DM9 to Smart in late 2012. In the following six months, Smart was able to collaborate with book publishers to load materials into the SMS inboxes of SIM cards. And it was then repackaged as Smart Txtbks.

These were distributed to several public schools. The telco reports that for those schools it provided with Smart Txtbks, school attendance went up to 95 percent, and average test performance hit 90 percent.

Smart’s head of public affairs, Ramon Isberto, says Smart Txtbks show how mobile technology — even low-end feature phones — can help improve people’s lives.

KakaoTalk Games Platform Sees Massive Growth in Sales and User Counts

South Korean chat app KakaoTalk has offered its mobile gaming platform for a full year now, and statistics the company has released on the platform’s anniversary are quite impressive. From the second half of 2012 to the first half of 2013, the company reports a 194% increase in accumulated sales on its game platform. The platform now has more than 30 million users and 300 million accumulated subscriptions. Not bad for a platform that, just a year ago, only offered 10 games.

KakaoTalk also claims the platform is bolstering indie and startup game development; it says that more than half of its top-grossing titles come out of small and medium-sized shops rather than big-budget developers.

It’s impressive news for KakaoTalk, of course, but it could also be good news for Tencent’s WeChat, which is looking for ways to monetize its service. The company has just begun to launch a gaming platform on WeChat, and KakaoTalk’s rousing success over the past year certainly proves that the business model can work. Of course, it also proves that Tencent and other competitors on the chat app market will have their work cut out for them competing with KakaoTalk anywhere outside of their home countries.

Alipay Opens up to Third-party Developers

Alipay, China’s largest third-party payment platform, updated the Android version of its mobile app, Alipay Wallet, with the newly released fund management product—Yuebao added into it. At the same time Alipay announced to open its 800 million user platform to third-party developers. (in Chinese)

中国最大のサードパーティ決済プラットフォームAlipayがモバイルアプリAlipay WalletのAndroid版をアップデートし、最近リリースした資産管理プロダクトのYuebaoをアプリ内に加えた。それと同時に、Alipayは8億人のユーザが利用する同プラットフォームをサードパーティに開放することを発表した（中国語記事）。

The home screen of Alipay Wallet now has an app center that features third-party apps. Users can log into those apps with Alipay accounts and make payments directly. DDMap, the e-coupon service Alibaba invested in, and iReader, a mobile reading service, have already been available there. Just like every another open platform, Alipay’s will give third-party services more visibility and, possibly, share revenues or take commission fees from the latter.

As to the Yuebao, the asset company’s sale system has been embedded into the Alipay platform. Customers can transfer their spare cash in Alipay accounts to Yuebao accounts and invest with TIANHONG, a private fund, directly without the bother of opening a fund account. It offers a chance for higher investment yields than bank interest rate. At the same time, the money in Yueao account is available for online shopping and transfer anytime. Besides, it is characterized most by low threshold of fund investment with a minimum of one yuan.

Singapore, India-based microlending platform Milaap raises USD 1.1M from investors

Milaap, a Singapore-headquartered and India-based microfunding platform, announced today that it has raised a USD 1.1M venture round led by Jungle Ventures, a Singapore-based early stage fund, with backing from the government’s Technology Incubation Scheme.

Other investors in this round include Skype co-founder Toivo Annus, Singapore-based family investment office Lionrock Capital, Sony Entertainment Television co-founder and Jungle Ventures managing director Jayesh Parekh, and existing investor Unitus Seed Fund, which specializes in funding bottom-of-pyramid startups.

Jayesh, which has known the Milaap team for years, and Hari Kumar, partner of Lion Rock Capital, will join the board.

This new round is on top of the USD 250K already raised by Unitus, First Light Ventures, and New Delhi-based entrepreneurs Vijay Shekhar Shara, and Rajiv Madhok.

The social enterprise targets inhabitants living in the rural and semi-urban areas of India who are outside the formal banking system.

The company works with vetted local partners to administer loans, which have an annual interest rate of between 12 to 18%. Profiles of those in need are then published on the Milaap website to invite contributions from users in the form of microloans.

Milaap says that its interest rates are half of existing microcredit products on the market. Competing platform Kiva typically charges around 36% in annual interest and fees, while Zidisha, which does away with field partners, charges less than 10%.

Since its founding in 2010 by Sourabh Sharma, Anoj Viswanathan, and Mayukh Choudary, Milaap has raised over USD 800K in loans impacting over 25,000 lives across 10 states in India. Needs include better school infrastructure, employment-linked, training for the youth, seed capital for small businesses, access to clean water & sanitation, and safe lighting for families.

The company claims that 100% of its loans are repayed, with an average loan period of 18 months. Part of its operating expenses is recouped by charging field partners about 6 percent of the interest rate on the loan amount recovered from borrowers.

It hopes to reach sustainability eventually by achieving scale and transacting larger loan volumes every month, and expand into one more country in Southeast Asia within a year.

WeChat Announced 70 million Overseas Users, Will Open up to Third-party Developers

At today’s 2013 Tencent Partner Conference, Martin Lau, president of Tencent announced that overseas WeChat users had reached 70 million. The 50 million milestone was announced as recently as in the past May. Its overall user accounts surpassed 300 million in January 2013.

WeChat would open up to all third-party developers on Tencent’s existing open platform, helping them expand to overseas markets, Mr. Lau said today.
