1. PrizmPrizm (France)The pyramid-shaped Prizm claims to be “the first learning music player.” The connected speaker can be linked to just about any streaming music service. But the twist is that it will monitor the moods of people in the room and, over time, learn how they are reacting to the music and then adjust the choices automatically. If an AI music speaker can really pull this off, I can see it becoming indispensable in many homes.

The list gets longer, but I want to get straight to the point. The ad tech industry is consolidating like crazy. This was pretty much predicted, as larger companies are starting to realize the massive opportunity in online, programmatic, and mobile advertising, and small ad tech companies are developing the technologies that will push ad tech through the advertising stratosphere. One can only wonder why this is all happening, who’s involved, whether it’s a good thing, and what’s in store for the future.I have the answers right here for you.
A Crowded SpaceIt’s safe to say that the ad tech industry is extremely crowded. There are probably 20 or more smaller companies at each other’s throats, in addition to the big players who have the wherewithal to stomp on anyone in their path. The market simply cannot sustain the amount of competition that exists. Marketers are confused about where to go with their advertising budgets and ad tech companies are confused about exactly the type of marketer they want using their platform. The reason the ad tech industry is so saturated is strong demand, especially in mobile.
However, they aren’t the only players in the game. Companies such as AdRoll, Rubicon Project, InMobi, and AppNexus have solidified themselves in the ad tech space. The big players have spotted a gold mine in ad tech and have decided that it’s easier to throw a couple of million at an acquisition than spend time on R&D to develop the same technologies that already exist. Increased competition means the life of small ad tech companies will be short-lived either because of acquisition or exhaustion. Is Ad Tech Consolidation Good Or Bad?Is all this M&A madness good or bad? It’s both.
On the one hand, consolidation will most likely lead to more standardization, better ad quality online and on mobile and less confusion among advertisers. Conversely, ad tech consolidation means limited options and higher costs for advertisers because of reduced competition.Either way, ad tech consolidation is a sign of a maturing ad tech industry. The Big Ad Tech OpportunityDespite all the gloom and doom news you just read about the large players gobbling up everything, there’s still a big opportunity for any company interested in getting a piece of the ad tech pie.
InfinityAR makes a software-based augmented reality (AR) engine that will let people interact with augmented content in their physical surroundings. It’s less Google Glass and more Microsoft Hololens. InfinityAR says it "can turn any device with two simple cameras into a powerful content augmentation platform." InfinityAR’s technology maps the 3D environment, in real time, and enables projecting augmented reality 3D scenes as if they were part of the real world. Furthermore, it enables the user to control augmented reality content using natural hand movements.
In starting the company, Kai and Christian met for beers once a week, usually to discuss crazy ideas. Kai did the programming on the first games, while Christian did the art. They assembled a team of 10 people, and they launched their first online poker game at the end of 2009.“We took some risks, but not too many,” Kai Wawrzinek said. “We tried to stay cash flow even.”In 2010, they bought a small company with eight employees to get access to more talent. In 2011, they raised a round of funding. By 2012, they had €30 million in revenues and €100 million by 2013. Last year, about 46 percent of revenue came from mobile games, and that is the major focus going forward.
I would argue that the next major opportunity in e-sports is fantasy gaming, a staple of American culture that generates nearly $4 billion from conventional sports. To understand why fantasy e-sports are feasible, we have to look at the evolution of e-sports in South Korea. We have to step back 17 years to the launch of StarCraft, the sci-fi strategy game that started it all.StarCraft and the rise of e-sportsIn October 1998, American video game maker Blizzard Entertainment changed the history and culture of South Korea when it released StarCraft. It created the e-sports we see rising in the U.S and around the world.
Google quietly launches Data Saver extension for ChromeGoogle has quietly released a Data Saver extension for Chrome, bringing the company’s data compression feature to the desktop for the first time. You can download the extension, currently in beta, from the Chrome Web Store. We say “quietly” because there doesn’t seem to be an announcement from Google. The extension was published on March 23 and appears to work exactly as advertised on the tin, based on what we’ve seen in our early tests.
Phenox2Love ‘em or hate ‘em, drones are one of the biggest gadget booms of late. Phenox2 is the latest iteration of the autonomous mini-drone after a successful Kickstarter for version 1.0 last year.Phenox2 features a custom intelligent self-control system (ISCS) that allows it to maneuver based on visual feature points like specific colors and patterns (i.e. hovering over a black square on a white floor). Using dual cameras and a microphone, it can follow a user based on vocal cues and land in the palm of your hand – no remote control required. It’s also Linux-based, allowing users to write custom flying programs and install them directly on Phenox2’s on-board computer.
Re: Sound BottleRe: Sound Bottle is an experimental music creation device that automatically mixes whatever sounds a user captures. Simply uncorking the bottle initiates the recording process, and returning the cap stores it. Up to six sounds can be captured and simultaneously mixed by the on-board software at a time. It’s like having your own personal DJ in a bottle.A simple LED interface allows users to control the volume and BPM, and an SD slot can be used to save music or add pre-recorded sounds. A spokesperson told Tech in Asia that Re: Sound Bottle will hit Kickstarter by the summer.
“Last year we announced our Kickstarter campaign at SXSW, and we reached our US$30,000 goal in just two days, ending with US$80,000 in total,” Yoshinobu Ichimura, Moff’s business manager, told Tech in Asia. “Last September, we shipped [Moff bands] to backers. Then in October, we began selling on Amazon.jp, and in November, we started selling Amazon.com in the US. We’ve sold more than 10,000 units since then.”The exposure Moff received at SXSW 2014 was a major factor in the team’s decision to return to Austin this year. But instead of Kickstarter backers, the startup came looking for business collaborators.
“We’d really like to find SDK partners,” Ichimura explained. “Moff bands have a lot of potential for not only kids, but for fitness, health care, and rehabilitation. It’s necessary to get to know app developers, especially now that we offer Unity Plugin support.”The team was also showing off the first external app using Moff’s SDK, a toothbrushing game for kids designed in collaboration with Tokyo Motion Control Network. Ichimura said that “several toothpaste companies” already expressed interest in forming a partnership. In addition, multi-colored Moff bands (the original is still only available in orange) were on display, as requested by brick-and-mortar retailers.
A parent on a business trip, for example, can record a voice message on their smartphone and send it to Bocco. If they opt to send a text, Bocco can also read it out loud. Their child can then speak into the Bocco to record and send a message back. There’s also a door sensor that will send notifications to the traveling parent to let them know when their kids get home from school or when their elderly parents leave the house to go shopping. The startup claims that it’s a more subtle, personal form of communication that’s easier for children and seniors to grasp.
Sure, it’s much more exciting to discuss crazy notions and location-based whatever – but first you must cover the basics, as most marketers fail to do.4. Product, product, product. You can have the best product, but it won’t do you any good if your marketing efforts are miserable. And you can have the best marketing strategy, but it won’t do you any good if your product fails. Marketing must always, always lead back to the product itself. The problem with brands today is that they hire marketing pros with zero product knowledge, which can only get them halfway.
2. You have to adjust your standardsBe prepared to be flexible with your standards if you want to succeed as the CEO of a company with different departments and teams. It’s no longer about getting things done your way, but about getting things done period. Sometimes that means you will have to compromise on perfection — or on your perceived view of perfection (see below) — in the pursuit of efficiency. Equally, you may need to give someone the time and space to achieve a higher standard than you’re used to because a particular product needs to be absolutely perfect. Either way, it’s simply no longer about you anymore, and you’ll need to be flexible in your standards to account for that.
Let me start with the things that fail fast does not apply to. If you do a lot of market research, are passionate about an idea, start a business with your best friend, work at it for a time, but struggle to get the business off the ground, does that mean you should fail fast and shut the business down? Of course not. Most of the world’s biggest businesses stumbled around for a while before finding the right formula to take off. As the CEO of a very successful company once told me, “It took me 10 years to become an overnight success.”
Fail fast isn’t about the big issues, it’s about the little ones. It’s an approach to running a company or developing a product that embraces lots of little experiments with the idea that some will work and grow and others will fail and die.Not sure if your product should require users to give a lot of information before starting to use it? One approach would be to talk to a lot of people, get all the different points of view, assess their opinions, decide what to do, schedule it on the product roadmap, develop and test it, and then release it. Or you could just get something out there and if it doesn’t work, fail fast, pivot, and try something else.
1990 was a key year for the Internet, as this was when the World Wide Web came to life out of a room at CERN in Switzerland — it was this that gave the Internet a proper usable interface. Up to that point, the Internet could be used for communicating in boring old text, but with the web, this brought in sounds, pictures, and general prettiness — a user-focused interface, or “user interface.”In the 25 years since then, many milestone dot-com moments have taken place — Microsoft.com (1993), AOL.com (1995), Amazon.com (1995), eBay.com (1995), Google.com (1997), Facebook.com (2004, as “thefacebook.com”), YouTube.com (2005), and Twitter.com (2006).
Microsoft.com (1993)、AOL.com (1995)、Amazon.com (1995)、eBay.com (1995)、Google.com (1997)、Facebook.com (2004, thefacebook.comとして)、YouTube.com (2005)、Twitter.com (2006)などがその例である。
