Boomtrain raises $12M to expand email and notifications automation platform

The email and notifications marketing automation firm Boomtrain has taken another funding round, this time a $12 million chunk from Sierra Ventures, Cota Capital, and Lerer Ventures.

Boomtrain uses machine learning to help businesses send customized emails and app notifications to customers. The company said it now holds 350 million user profiles and 7.3 trillion data points in its database, and it has targeted 1.35 billion messages.

“We need an understanding of two buckets of data to do this,” Boomtrain CEO and cofounder Nick Edwards told VentureBeat in a phone interview Tuesday. “First we need to understand what the customer is reading, what they’re sharing on social, what they’ve purchased, and what they’ve commented on in social media.”

Edwards said the second bucket is filled with data about the client’s product. For instance, Boomtrain might conduct an audit of a client’s marketing content library, then “semantically read the content and categorize the topic models,” as Edwards put it.

Boomtrain was just a four-person shop until it raised its $2 million funding round in March of 2014. Then, the company started signing on customers and making hires. Today the startup has 100 paying “enterprise level” customers and has grown to more than 40 employees.

The first all-Liquid Metal phone, the Turing, opens for preorders July 31

The Turing phone will be the first phone on the market with a complete Liquid Metal shell. The phone goes into preorder July 31 for customers in the U.S. and China.

While the iPhone 6 and other phones use shell materials (like aluminum) that can bend, good luck bending the Liquidmorphium Turing phone.

Liquidmorphium is a material stronger than both titanium and steel and disperses shock much more efficiently. If you apply enough pressure to the material, it will break, but it will not bend. The material also reflects light very differently from aluminum and stainless steel.

Until now, Turing Robotic Industries CEO S.Y.L. Chao told me, nobody’s been able to manufacture pieces of Liquidmorphium of more than 10 millimeters. The iPhone 6 uses Liquid Metal only in the SIM card slot, although Chao believes the shell of the iPhone 7 will likely be made with Liquidmorphium.

Chao says his company invented a new manufacturing process for mass-producing the new material.

The phone is also covered with a nanoparticle material inside and out, so it’s waterproof. When the phone is submerged, water enters the ports on the sides of the phone and covers the circuitboard inside. But even the board is covered with the nanoparticle treatment, so water molecules bounce off.

Another innovation is a side-mounted fingerprint reader. My thumb fit over the side sensor far more naturally and ergonomically than it does over the front-bottom mounted sensor on my iPhone.

The Turing phone does not use a standard USB port for power, as most other Android phones do. Instead it uses a 9-pin MagSafe power adapter.

Security

The first thing Chao told me about the Turing phone is that it uses its own end-to-end authentication system. Every phone manufactured comes with a unique Turing key inside. These keys use a complex system of encryption and are virtually uncrackable by hackers. App developers can get their own Turing key via a Turing API.

Because all Turing keys can recognize each other, it’s possible to establish a secure tunnel between the Turing phone and an ecommerce app, for example. There’s no need to work through a third-party encryption server to establish secure communications and/or transactions.

The Turing phone will come in three different (but similar) designs at launch. It’ll also be available in two memory sizes. The 64GB version will sell for $740 and the 128GB version for $870, pretty much on par with the mid-range phones currently on the market.

According to Siantar and Chia, angel backer Teo started in 1973 with JP Morgan, and by the time he turned 38, he was Head of Global Markets in Taipei and Hong Kong, and subsequently Head of North America Foreign Exchange.

Upon his return to Singapore, he was asked to take on a lead role at GIC as Head of Foreign Exchange, Commodities and Short Term Rates, where he stayed for nine years.

Timothy is now retired and currently sits as Chairman of the board of St Luke’s Eldercare, and holds several directorial appointments at organisations such as the National Library Board and Guocoland.

The first joint product to emerge from the Google / Broad tie-up will involve bringing Broad Institute’s Genome Analysis Toolkit (GATK) to the Google Cloud Platform and offered as a service. For the uninitiated, the GATK software analyzes “high-throughput genomic sequencing data,” and it has been made available for a while already for free to academics and other non-profit users. More than 20,000 users have processed genomic data through the software to date.

Though the Google Cloud-based version of the service is limited in availability initially, the long-term vision is to let any genomic researcher add, store, and analyse data in the cloud.

Today’s news is the latest in a long line of partnership announcements as the cloud computing titans battle it out to grab the biggest names in medicine and research. Back in March, we reported on how Google hopes to use big data and machine-learning to aid drug discovery. Working with Stanford University, Google published a paper on how using data from different sources can better determine which chemical compounds will serve as “effective drug treatments for a variety of diseases.”

A couple of weeks back, Microsoft announced Project Premonition, which involves using smart traps and drones to capture and transport mosquitoes to help prevent future disease outbreaks. Working with academics from the likes of the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, part of the project involves identifying diseases and, using recent developments in molecular biology and genetic sequencing, scientists can create cloud-based databases of their research.

In the simplest terms, the cloud computing companies provide the infrastructure, and the academics provide the analytical methodology.

Meanwhile, revenues have been growing, but after nine years, Twitter still doesn’t turn a profit. And that leads to constant speculation that it might acquired by Google or someone else. Not super for morale.

Costolo almost completely overhauled the upper ranks of management last year, and yet some of the fundamental problems didn’t seen to get fixed. At some point, there’s only one head left to chop off.

And while it’s not worth repeating in detail, if you read (or skim) the Sacca blog post, you get a good feeling for perhaps Twitter’s biggest shortcoming: Its inability to consistently develop new products that expand use and engagement.

Facebook is great at this. And while Twitter has finally seemed to be picking up the pace (lifting the character limit on direct messages yesterday), innovation on the platform still seems more driven by users.

The mess
Of course, if one wants to be more optimistic, one could call this, “The opportunity.”

After all, Twitter still has incredible recognition around the world. At the same time, as someone who has used Twitter since December 2007, I find myself turning to it much less than Facebook. For some live events, it’s great. But even then, the flood of tweets can be a bit useless and chaotic.

While Twitter was tweaking direct messaging for several years, Facebook spun off Messenger into a whole different product that has 700 million users. And now Messenger is its own platform. Messaging was just one of Twitter’s many huge missed opportunities.

It’s a bit like driving. Every time we drive in a car we are risking our lives. At any moment, someone could slam into us and kill us even though we did nothing wrong. It is tragic when this occurs, but it occurs rarely enough that we consider it an acceptable risk. The many benefits we gain from having the ability and freedom to move about more than make up for the risks. Nobody seriously suggests banning cars from the road in order to stop the multitude of fully avoidable automobile deaths that occur each year. As a society, we have determined that the benefits are too great compared to the risks.

We need to follow the same approach with big data and analytics. The benefits of using big data properly can be immense. No matter how careful we are, however, that same data will at times be misused. Our goal should be to minimize the occurrence of abuse and make the penalties significant enough to dissuade most people from even trying. If state governments, as well as other organizations, are able to leverage big data in only a fraction of the positive ways that it can be leveraged, we’ll all be better off for it.

SXT Learning CEO Ryan J King was a corporate trainer for seven years. Trouble is, the whole corporate training system is broken, he said at the top of his pitch. Those training sessions give too much information in one go – and people tend to fall asleep. Zoned-out office workers have slept in his own training sessions, he admits – and he’s even fallen asleep when attending such things himself. He backed that up with photographic evidence.

A Deloitte study reckons that 90 percent of what’s taught at training sessions is forgotten within five minutes, wasting most of the estimated US$160 billion that companies put into those sessions each year.

Hopefully the app-based model won’t mean that workers are expected to do training in their own time, but King’s pitch didn’t touch on that issue.
