Weiyuyin includes different styles of voice messages, such as animal’s sounds, popular slogans, amusing dialogues and so on. You may insert these voices to express your emotion or to change the atmosphere. What’s more, you can DIY your own voice messages! After recorded in Weiyuyin, your voice can even be changed into robot’s voice or cute baby voice if you like.
Weiyuyin could help users make friends with strangers to an extent. It’s obvious that vivid sound effects make interaction between friends more absorbing. But to strangers, its vocal messages can break the ice and melt down the tension. And, with Tencent Weixin’s Open Platform launched in May 2012, an increasing number of plugins or services can be integrated in Weixin such as very popular application Changba (sharing your karaoke songs with friends on Weixin). With these third-party service installed into Weixin, users can play games, record songs, and do anything you could on the mobile phone.
Eventually, Weixin may become a very influential platform that every application might rely on it, just like Facebook’s open platform. Note that Weiyuyin is already among Top 25 in Chinese App Stores!Weiyuyin is developed by Shortail Lab, a Shenzhen-based company. It has launched several social-networking apps before, including YueYue (an LSB app inviting people near you to do something together), HuaHuaCai (similar to Draw Something) and HeHe (a service allows you to post weibo with more than 140 words).
これまでに、YueYue(近くにいつ人に一緒に何かするよう誘うLSBアプリ)、HuaHuaCai(Draw Somethingと同様のアプリ)、HeHe(140語以上でweiboに投稿するのを可能にするサービス)などいくつかのソーシャルネットワーキング・アプリをローンチしている。
Find Unique Travel Experiences With Local Guides Using MeetripWhile traveling can be lots of fun, some aspects of it can be quite mundane. Buying guide books and looking up “popular restaurants” using Google – we all end up going to the same places. The rise of Airbnb is a clear sign that people are looking for more in their trips. And a startup from Japan plans to tackle this travel sharing market with a new product called Meetrip.
Meetrip is a smartphone app (pictured below) that connects local users (or guides) with travelers. After signing up using Facebook credentials, local guides can quickly and easily create their own tour plans. For example, a three-hour tour to explore an old town not known to tourists, or a long lunch hour to enjoy the best hot noodles in town. Travelers can find interesting tours and sign up for them. By communicating back and forth with the guide, together you can come up with a perfect tour just for you. The details of the tour including the price can be revised afterwards, leaving space for adjustments.
The idea of Meetrip came from co-founder Takashi Kiyama who is a frequent traveler. Of all the trips he has ever taken, he explains that the ones that he remembers the most are those where he met someone local and communicated with them. And that’s why Meetrip focuses on people rather than plans. The team founded the company in June 2011, and has been working on the product for four months. They released a prototype in Taipei, Taiwan, and conducted beta user interviews to enhance the user experience.
The motivation for locals to use Meetrip can be many things, including interacting with travelers from distant places, speaking/practicing foreign languages, or explaining a special place in your area to travelers. These are the initial reasons why locals begin using the app; but with time, Meetrip can become a significant source of income for them. For this reason, the team is focused on bringing their travel product to Asian countries first. Meetrip can be used in Tokyo and Taipei for now, but there are plans to expand to Seoul, Jakarta, and Bangkok within the next few months. The startup’s goal is to release Meetrip in more than 10 countries cities this year.
The company behind Meetrip is Duckdive. The other co-founder is Nobuhiro Ariyasu. As a university student, he founded and sold his first company to Net Age Group. His second startup was a C2C market place named Cyta.jp. The CTO of Duckdive is Shinya Kasatani, who while working as CTO for another company released a very popular iPhone app called Pocket Guitar. The paid app has been downloaded more than 1.5 million times. They are all graduates of Keio university.
Alipay: Payment on Mobile is 60 Seconds Faster Than on PCAt day two of the China Internet Conference, Xu Ji, product engineer director at Alipay, revealed an interesting stat that mobile payment on Alipay is one minute faster than on PCs. For folks who are new to Alipay, it is a popular payment wallet/gateway which allows users to store credits and pay via credit card and escrow services. While the mobile screen is a limitation, Xu says that building for mobile forces engineers to remove unnecessary items on the screen to ensure users can check out as soon as possible.
In 2011, the male to female ratio using Alipay mobile payment was 56 to 44. He explains that the initial user wave was techies but in 2012, the male to female ratio reversed to 46 to 54. There are now more females using Alipay, and Xu believes that e-commerce has gone mainstream and is slowly becoming a norm.Xu also released figures stating that many mothers use Alipay at around 3am. Xu explains that they usually checkout baby-related items such as milk powder and diapers. So a reasonable explanation is that they stayed away to take care of crying babies. And shopping via mobile phone is a common activity for them to pass time while taking care of babies.
Qihoo 360 Search Launching Open Platform, Ready to Use Google AdsYes, it’s Zhou Hongyi again. But there isn’t any war of words this time round. Earlier today at the China Internet Conference, the Qihoo (NYSE:QIHU) CEO was talking about the future – and a possible collaboration – of its 360 Search engine. As Sina Tech reported, 360 Search will launch an open platform and they will also pick up Google’s advertising system on its search engine.
Zhou mentioned that 360 Search has plenty to learn from Google, especially in the aspect of advertising on a search engine platform. He also shared that 360 will adopt the categorization of paid and unpaid search results, which is mainly adopted by Google. At the same time, 360 will launch an open platform to allow more quality vertical searches on its search engine.
Zhou commented (translations are mine):Search engines should be an open platform, where distributions are spread across to many other sites. […] Search engines should not just contain data and fail to put it to better use.Zhou also reflected that there are plenty of high quality vertical searches out in the market that no one gives a damn about. He is open to the idea of working with smaller web companies, so as to give its users a more professional set of search results. Earlier this week, 360 Search focused on its users’ experience with the launch of the “like Project” allowing social search recommendations – like with Google and G+ – in its own 360 Browser for Windows.
Oh well, it’s tough to exactly figure out what’s on Zhou Hongyi’s mind. We never seem to be able to predict his next move. However, be it a gimmick or a strategy, Zhou is clearly trying to make more friends now rather than creating yet more enemies. The Qihoo CEO also hinted at possible collaborations with Google, Microsoft and local rival Sogou; the plans will be revealed in the near future, he added.
China’s Advertising Sweet Spot: Online Video and the Rising Middle ClassChina’s online consumers are predominantly young – mostly under 30. Over time, as the population ages, so will the country’s online userbase. In a recent report I wrote with the Multimedia Research Group, titled China’s Advertising Sweet Spot: Targeting Young, Upwardly Mobile Consumers with Digital Media, we answered critical questions that marketers have about tapping into one of China’s most attractive consumer segments:
Where does the greatest opportunity lie in China’s consumer market?・What are the most effective online channels to effectively reach them?・How have leading companies and agencies been most successful? Where have they failed?・How can I measure results, in turn making the case for additional investments?Let’s take a quick look at a few facts:・At the end of 2011, China had 500+ million internet users, 325 million online video users, 250 million microbloggers, and 244 million social media site users. Chinese internet users are relatively young (mostly under 30) and the most active online video users in particular are both young (19–24) with a middle-class income.
Television remains the most effective medium to reach Chinese mass-market consumers. However, the explosive growth of online video and social media cannot be ignored by marketers in the Middle Kingdom. Online video targets the most attractive consumer segment – young, upwardly mobile middle-class consumers.・Branded online video is becoming a useful tool to engage and communicate with the Chinese audience especially when the marketing goal is to establish a unique brand image or proposition to customers.
I argue that online video ads often serve as a complement to substitute for TV ads given the unique audience and cost-effective delivery compared to TV ads. Branded video is becoming the most popular way to connect with Chinese consumers emotionally and to differentiate the brand.
As for social media, marketers should be aware of different platform characteristics. For Chinese social networking websites, word-of-mouth from real life friends/family members is most influential, while on Chinese microblogs, celebrities or industry experts are very powerful in shaping consumers’ opinions and attitudes. As for online communities, targeted interest/topic groups can serve as the perfect space for marketers to launch niche campaigns targeted at a specific consumer segment.
Marketers need to pay attention to the quality of the interaction when evaluating campaign progress. Results must be quantifiable, but high participation numbers can be misleading since spam on Chinese social media, especially on microblogs is commonplace. In addition, related to the quality of interactions, there is a trend in China’s social media space in which topic/thought leaders are few, while the majority of users are silent. Therefore, marketers need to examine the quality of their participants, to determine how influential they really are. If you are interested in finding out additional information about the report, you can learn more here [1].
