Founded by Ikuya Yamada, the idea of Phroni was born out of the frustration over text selection on smartphones and tablets. During that time, Ikuya was also conducting research on machine learning and natural language processing. He noticed that his research might be able to solve this issue and dramatically improve the user experience of smartphone and tablets, and therefore created Phroni.

Nonetheless, “extracting interesting keywords from a text may not be as easy as it sounds. It can be very difficult even with state-of-the-art research outcomes”, says Ikuya.

To date, Phroni has already been integrated and used on several news apps in Japan while also receiving good reviews on major Japanese review websites such as iphone-girl.jp and applefan2.com. The team also recently pitched at GigaOM Mobilize 2012 in San Francisco and received the highest scores from two of three judges from Sequoia Capital and Norwest Venture Partners.

Phroni plans to release an API, which enables app vendors to integrate Phroni into their app. It also plans to expand in the U.S. market.
Currently, Phroni can be ran on iOS and Android. However, since existing browsers such as Safari and Chrome don’t provide add-on functionalities at the moment, Phroni cannot support these browsers. Therefore, the team is working on supporting browsers that have add-on mechanism such as Dolphin Browser and Sleipnir.

This Startup Can Tell You if a Photo Is Fake

In the age of Photoshop, it’s almost impossible to say with absolute certainty whether any given image is real, but one former Photoshop employee hopes to change that.

Fourandsix Technologies, a startup founded by a former Adobe Photoshop executive and a digital forensics expert, unveiled its first piece of software this week, which promises to help law enforcement determine whether a photo is authentic or not.

The software, called FourMatch, analyzes the meta data in picture files to quickly determine if a photo has been modified. FourMatch relies on a comprehensive database of more than 70,000 “signatures” that are left on a file from each piece of hardware and software that goes into creating it. As the company explains in a description of the product, “Once an image has been edited and resaved from a software product, this signature is changed to match the software rather than the original capture device.”

FourMatch is primarily intended for police and lawyers who need to determine whether a photograph has been tampered with in any way between the time it was first captured and submitted as evidence. However, the software won’t tell you exactly how the image has been altered — if it has been at all — because it only analyzes the file data rather than the image itself. For this reason, it can just tell you if a file has been touched by another application.

In the future, though, the startup plans to release other tools to determine the authenticity of pictures that should have broader use. In particular, Connor sees a growing need for technology that can detect photo fraud in medical research, help media companies assess whether their photographers have been too liberal editing their photos and sift through pictures going viral on social media to figure out whether they’re real. Likewise, he thinks tools like this could help banks verify the authenticity of pictures of checks and other payments taken by customers.

If you think the best thing you can do to prepare for an interview with a technology company is to memorize brainteasers, like Google’s, “Why are manhole covers round,” think again. In the height of their popularity, tech interview brainteasers were meant to test a candidate’s reasoning ability, overall intelligence, and ability to keep cool when thrown off guard. But as a whole, the major technology companies are moving away from these types of questions.

That becomes too random. There’s no reason to ask a brainteaser if it has nothing to do with computer science when you can ask one that tests both intelligence and knowledge of computer science.”

What’s more, adds McDowell — who interviewed more than 120 people in her work at Google — as books and blogs picked up on the novel brainteaser questions, it became difficult to determine whether or not brainteasers were testing what they were designed to test: think-on-your-feet reasoning skills. Here’s how these companies are approaching the interview process now.

What Kind of Questions You Should Expect

There are generally three types of interview questions:

1. Subject-specific brainteasers
2. Questions you’re likely to solve on the job
3. Questions with either multiple or no right answers

“How would you crawl the internet?”
