There’s also a Square-like gadget for mobile payments by Lakala, the digital payment company Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun invested in about a decade ago. More recently Xiaomi invested in Misfit, maker of the Misfit Shine activity tracker which found China its top market earlier this year.

Xiaomi ships over 1 million Mi Band fitness trackers in just 3 months

Xiaomi already shipped over one million Mi Bands since the device went on sale on August 18 to November 28, according to the fitness tracker’s official Weibo account. At its peak, it sold 103,000 in a single day.

To put that into perspective, only about 3.3 million fitness bands and activity trackers were sold between April 2013 and March 2014 in the US, according to the NPD group (h/t Recode). Fitbit is the bestseller in the American market, making up 67 percent (roughly 2.1 million units) of sales in that one-year period.

While those stats don’t account for shipments outside the US, it looks like the RMB 79 (US$13) Mi Band is well on its way to the top spot as the world’s bestselling fitness tracker, especially as it reaches more countries. It’s still only officially available in China, for now, and will go on sale in Hong Kong and Taiwan tomorrow.

Xiaomi also reports the total number of recorded steps accumulated by all Mi Band users surpassed 80 billion.

Offline flash sales

Barra said that Xiaomi will do offline sales soon in India – sort of. The plan is to do what he calls offline flash sales (mirroring its online sales system) in India for the Redmi 4G. That will be done in partnership with Airtel. Look out for that early next month.

There will be more offline sales in Indonesia, such as the store-based sales done by local partner Erajaya. He reveals Xiaomi once sold 2,000 phones in one day in offline sales in just two stores.

Fewer than five percent of phones sold in Indonesia are sold online, he states, so there are challenges to being focused on ecommerce. “Perhaps we can be a driver” of ecommerce, he says.

He went on to explain that Xiaomi wants to work very closely with the tech ecosystems in India and Indonesia in terms of startups, apps, and services. There are no deals sorted out yet, but he will talk a lot with startups to cook up something. An example from China is the way Xiaomi created the MiBand in partnership with a Chinese startup.

“It makes perfect sense to build in Indonesia,” he says – but that’s advice for hardware startups, not a statement related to Xiaomi. “I have high hopes for manufacturing in Indonesia,” he adds, and Barra advises local startups to get a Raspberry Pi and start iterating hardware in the same way they do with software.

Privacy kerfuffle

“We can’t serve everything from China,” he says, due to issues like high latency and time-outs. That’s why Xiaomi opened a data center in Singapore and the US, and might do the same for India.

If “one of the indirect benefits of this move” is that non-China customers feel safer about privacy (avoiding the grasp of China’s government), then that’s a bonus, he explains. That’s a reference to the fears over Xiaomi’s online messaging service sending back data to China, which prompted the company to make the service an optional feature for people outside China.

Xiaomi currently sells phones in six countries aside from its home in China.

In 1929, John Matouk founded a company whose mission was to give Americans ready access to the world’s most luxurious linens. Mr. Matouk, who was born in Damascus the son of a fine jeweler, understood the principles of meticulous workmanship and good taste. In July 1929, he fulfilled his life-long dream to go to the United States. He brought with him trunks of exquisite fabrics and cloths that he sold to the finest stores and elite families. Even in those difficult times there were those who had a passion for fine things and the means to afford them.

That leaves proposed launches in Thailand, Russia, Mexico, Brazil, and Turkey postponed to various points in 2015. Presumably, mooted entries into western markets will be pushed back even further. Xiaomi said in the past that it might be ready for North America in 2015.

In further comments picked up by Bloomberg, Barra explains that the upstart brand “went from shipping 50,000 a week into India to 200,000.” He added, “We’re shipping absurd quantities into India.” It’s not clear why exactly this postponement is happening – it might be due to limited production capacity, but the company denies this suggestion.

Xiaomi is the top Chinese brand, according to the visits that Baidu sees, followed by Huawei, Lenovo, Oppo, and Coolpad. Xiaomi grew by three percent in that time-frame.

This kind of data is not as reliable as sales numbers provided by brands, or even shipment figures issued by the likes of IDC or Canalys, but it still gives us a good snapshot of what’s happening in the country. Canalys’ most recent data corroborates Baidu’s numbers by saying that Xiaomi was China’s top phone company in terms of phone shipments in Q2, leaping ahead of the reigning Android king, Samsung.

Xiaomi buys $300 million stake in Chinese video portal iQiyi

Xiaomi has confirmed it will invest US$300 million in Baidu-backed online video portal iQiyi for an undisclosed stake in the company, according to Techweb. The money is part of Xiaomi founder Lei Jun’s pledged US$1 billion to accelerate content acquisition. Lei’s personal fund also participated in the investment.

Last week, the company also revealed it would invest an undisclosed amount into Youku Tudou, another leading video portal in China.

Xiaomi plans to make a major announcement today at 2pm Beijing time today, which will likely include the partnership with iQiyi. Many fans are also expecting a larger-screen version of Xiaomi’s smart TV.

Both Youku and iQiyi are developing exclusive, original TV shows and movies. The portals’ libraries of exclusive content can help Xiaomi better monetize its cheap gadgets, which are likely sold at or near cost of production.

In July, iQiyi launched its own in-house film studio, and now has eight co-produced movies in the pipeline.

Chinese authorities have clamped down on domestic video sites this year, banning many foreign TV shows and forcing them to obtain licenses to stream overseas TV series.

WeChat Adds Wi-Fi Solution to Public Accounts

WeChat today added a new WiFi connection plugin for its public accounts. The new feature offers Wi-Fi solution plans to bricks-and-mortar stores, connecting Wi-Fi service providers, offline merchants and customers.

According to Tencent, this function will be applicable to different scenarios in shopping centers, hotels, hospitals and restaurants.

WeChat users will be able to enjoy free WiFi connection over WeChat public accounts when they enter the corresponding bricks-and-mortar stores.

While users are surfing on the internet, the WiFi connection tab will be displayed at the homepage of WeChat, enabling users to browse the details of connected public accounts in one click. In addition, WeChat will offer merchants various data in fields such as like daily visitors, or sent alerts to customers when they are approaching the stores. These data will enable retailers to derive business intelligence from real-time and historical WiFi analytics and convert customers into promoters via the integration of social channels.

WiFi service providers and third-party developers will also gain access to more data from public accounts, helping them to manage user accounts, and so on.

Tencent reportedly invested in WiWide, a leading domestic business WiFi business which received funding from Xiaomi last year. Tencent have poured over RMB100 million (around US$16 million) in this financing round together with Dianping, the review and rating service in which Tencent holds a stake, the report added.

Tencent isn’t the first internet giant that hopes to have access to all consumers through WiFi hotspot software. Alibaba, Meituan, Xiaomi have all launched their public WiFi solutions to tap the burgeoning sector.

Alibaba will launch an international version of Taobao: Ma

Taobao, China’s smash-hit ecommerce marketplace run by Alibaba, will get an international version in English and other languages, said company founder and chairman Jack Ma today.

Ma’s remarks came during a speech at the World Internet Conference and were reported by Reuters.

Taobao is a little like Ebay in that it involves person-to-person selling, but many of its merchants are small businesses selling new goods, in contrast for the tendency of Ebay to be full of random people selling secondhand stuff.

Alibaba already has a global marketplace called AliExpress, but that’s mostly for Chinese merchants to ship wholesale to overseas buyers.

In September, Taobao launched a regional version for Southeast Asia, with translation available for a few major languages there including English. But the translated version only applies to links and navigational elements, not the actual product listings. Taobao uses the International Parcel Forwarding Service (IPFS) to send goods to overseas buyers. Shortly after launching there, 280,000 customers signed up in Singapore, and another 210,000 in Malaysia.

Ma didn’t give a timeline or any further details about the international marketplace.
