Volatility can either be measured by using the standard deviation or variance between returns from that same security or market index. Commonly, the higher the volatility, the riskier the security.

That last line concerning risk is particularly significant. While Bitcoin’s volatility is great for traders and even aggressive investors, its risky reputation places it beyond the consideration of more cautious financial players, whether amateur or expert.

This “volatility moat” is arguably a good thing. At its present level of development, Bitcoin would struggle to absorb a massive influx of new users or investors.
