放射線は、細胞が分裂してふえるときに必要な遺伝子に作用して、細胞がふえないようにしたり、細胞が新しい細胞に置き換わるときに脱落する仕組みを促すことで、がん細胞を消滅させたり、少なくしたりします。放射線治療はこのような作用を利用してがんを治療します。放射線治療に用いられる放射線の種類には、X線、γ（ガンマ）線、電子線などがあります。このほか、研究段階ですが陽子線や重粒子線による治療が一部の施設で行われています。

Treatment of cancer by radiation

Radiation extinguish or decrease the number of cancer cells by acting on the necessary genes for the dividing and multiplying of the cells; as a result it stops the cells from increasing, and enhances the shedding of cells when the cells are replaced by new cells. Radiation therapy utilizes such mechanism, and thus treats cancer. The types of radiation used in radiation therapy are: X-ray, γ-ray, electron ray, etc. Other than these, though it's still experimental level, proton beam and heavy particle beam are used in some facilities.
