Popcorn App for Movie Lovers in Singapore Works Great

Popcorn is a new mobile app on iTunes which helps movie lovers to search for showtimes, previews, and book tickets. We recently met co-founder of the app, Lee Ken Ming, who says that his app is “really cool” and has the potential to be “the best movie app in town.”

He sounded pretty confident and so I gave it try. My conclusion? I like it. The app is solid. But there are areas where it could have been better. Nonetheless, Popcorn serves its purpose pretty well – search, preview, book — all in an app (iTunes link).

シンガポール発、映画好きのためのポップコーン・アプリがとてもいい

ポップコーンは映画好きな人がショータイム、プレビュー、予約チケットを探すのを手伝ってくれる新しいiTuneアプリだ。私たちは最近このアプリの共同設立者のLee Ken Mingに会った。彼はこのアプリは「本当にクール」と言い、「町で一番のムービーアプリ」になる可能性がある、と言っている。

Search: Popcorn’s search functionalities pin-point what movie lovers are looking for exactly: (1) movie date and time, (2) movie title, (3) and theater. It loads pretty fast on 3G too. Nonetheless, I thought the date selection was pretty disappointing as it only allows search to be conducted for today, tomorrow, and day after tomorrow. In other words, folks who are searching for movie tickets from Monday to Wednesday can’t use the search function to book tickets for Saturday, which is a common movie day.

サーチ：ポップコーンのサーチ機能は映画好期の人が正確に探したい次のことをピンポイント検索してくれる：(1)映画の日付と時間、(2)映画のタイトル、(3)映画館。このアプリは3Gでもかなり早くアップロードできる。それでも、日付選択が今日、明日、明後日しか検索できないのにはとてもがっかりした。つまり、月曜から水曜の間に映画チケットを探しても、映画がよく上映される土曜日のチケットを予約することはできないということだ。

Book: Popcorn provides a full list of theaters across Singapore. In other words, there seems to be no favoritism towards a particular cinema. Clicking on ‘book’ will lead the users to the cinema’s page. So depending on the cinema, some of the theater sites aren’t mobile friendly to facilitate easy booking through the iPhone. But the option of letting users buy straight from the app makes things more convenient.

Popcorn isn’t without competitors though. A couple of my friends in Singapore are using the Showtimezz app to check for movie while on the go. I used to use that too but I personally find it a little cumbersome. It doesn’t have a search option to help users find movie information quickly and accurately.

予約：ポップコーンではシンガポール中の映画館の全リストを提供している。つまり、一見特定のシネマびいきはないように見える。「予約（book）」をクリックするとシネマページにジャンプする。シネマによるが、映画館のサイトのいくつかは、iPhoneで簡単に予約できるといったモバイルフレンドリー性に欠けるものもある。しかしアプリからユーザーが直接買い物ができるようにしているオプションのおかげでかなり便利になっている。

しかしポップコーンには競合他社がないわけではない。シンガポールの私の何人かの友人はShowtimezzアプリを使って外出先でも映画をチェックしている。私もそれをよく使っていたが、個人的にはそのアプリがわずらわしいことに気づいた。映画情報を素早く正確に見つけるためのサーチオプションがないからだ。

I must admit I rarely use an app for movie booking. Rather, I prefer to Google for movies and buy it online before heading out to meet my friends. But it doesn’t hurt to have Popcorn on your iPhone though, just in case.

Popcorn is free to download and is generating revenue via ads for now. Ken Ming explains his business model to me further:

Preview: Movie previews are pretty good. It includes a neat write up with the running time and movie cast listed. Every movie is also linked to a YouTube movie preview video and is integrated with Rotten Tomatoes’ movie rating — one to five stars —
which helps users to make a more educated choice quickly. However, it will help if users can view comments from local reviewers though, especially on locally produced movies which don’t have reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. Facebook integration that would allows users to comment would be neat.

It now appears that the cloned Groupon.cn… hmmm, I mean TuanBao, has fired 70 to 75 percent of all its staff from the time of its inception to now. Earlier this year, Chinese media reports today, the company had 4,000 employees nationwide. But that figure is now at 700. That’s 82.5 percent of all employees at TuanBao having being told to clear their desks.

Taking some regional offices as examples, TuanBao’s Beijing branch has trimmed its editorial department from 120 to 36 people. Further south, in Suzhou, the original team of 40 there is now down to 10.

Now let’s check on Singapore, India, and Indonesia — all countries with emerging start-ups that we regularly cover. It’s interesting to see that they are mostly under the world’s average, unlike Japan, Hong Kong, and Taiwan in top position. However, the start-up ecosystems in these countries are growing quite well considering their Internet speed handicap. It’s not an earth-shattering conclusion, but it is reassuring to know that speed is only one little factor contributing in the growth of digital start-up ecosystem.

Wishscope: A Social Wishlist from Japan

Tokyo-based tech start-up Zawatt just announced it has received funding from Japan’s Cyber Agent Ventures and now is worth 20 million yen. The start-up is currently working on developing an iPhone app called Wishscope, which allows you to ask someone to help you make your wishes true and solve problems that you’re facing.

I just had an opportunity to interview the start-up’s CEO Daisaku Harada and CTO Nobuaki Suzuki at Shibuya’s incubation facility, EC-Navi Boat.

東京に拠点を置くスタートアップ、Zwattが、このほど日本のサイバーエージェントベンチャーズから資金調達を受け、現在2千万円の価値となっていることを発表した。このスタートアップは現在、ウィッシュスコープと呼ばれるiPhoneアプリの開発作業中だ。ウィッシュスコープとは、自分の望みをかなえたり、直面している問題を解決するためのお手伝いを誰かに頼むことができるサービスだ。

私はこのスタートアップのCEO（最高経営責任者）のハラダ・ダイスケ氏とCTO（最高技術責任者）スズキ・ノブアキ氏に渋谷のスタートアップ育成施設のECナビボートでインタビューする機会があった。

Could you briefly tell us a little about Wishscope?

"Wishscope is a web service and iPhone app that helps people connect by matching someone in need of help with those who can contribute or help them. There users can assume two different roles in this service: a person can ask someone else to help them (i.e. be a ‘wisher’), or they can help someone do something (i.e. be a ‘hero’). A list of other users’ wants and wishes will be presented on our platform, and the users can take one if they find something that they can help with. Our service aims to help people solve problems and encourages them to connect with each other on our platform."

What is the major difference between Wishscope and similar services such as Zaarly (U.S.) and Wondershake (Japan)?

Zaarly was launched when we were just preparing for launching our service. One of the main differences with them is our service is based on real name member registration. As for Wondershake, actually we aimed at encouraging people to connect but we use a sort of list presentation where users can share their interests. That’s the main gap.

ウィッシュスコープと、ザーリィ（アメリカ）やワンダーシェイク（日本）のような類似のサービスとの主な違いは何ですか？

ザーリィは当社がこのサービスのスタート準備をしているときにスタートしました。それらのサービスとの主な違いの１つは、当社のサービスは本名登録を基本としていることです。ワンダーシェイクとの違いについては、実際当社は人々のつながりを促進することを目的としましたが、当社はユーザーが自分の関心事をシェアできるリスト・プレゼンテーション的なものを使っています。これが主な違いです。

What made you launch the service?

"CEO Harada has a girlfriend, and I’ve given her many presents. But she never looks pleased when I give it to her. I thought it’s very hard to find what other people really want. I then thought that exchanging people’s wants would be a good idea. There are some services where people exchange skill sets on ‘crowd-sourcing’ sites, but I think it may require a high skill level or some expertise to participate. Our service is simpler, and people without any technical background or special expertise can help someone solve their issues and make their wishes come true."
