Key players in Asia’s maker movement

Asia’s maker movement is well underway, with startups, ecosystems, and spaces augmenting the rising interest in hardware-software innovation. While the Internet has encroached on us, much of our lives still occur in the world of atoms, which contains plenty of opportunities that are untouched by Internet companies.

アジアのメーカームーブメントにおける主要なプレーヤー

アジアのメーカームーブメントがまさに進行中だ。スタートアップ、エコシステム、メーカースペースによりハードウェア-ソフトウェアイノベーションに対する関心がさらに高まりを見せている。インターネットは我々領域に侵入してきているが、まだ生活の大部分は現実世界で起こっている。そこにはインターネット企業が手を付けていない多くのチャンスがある。

To be clear, the maker movement and the rise of hardware-software companies in Asia are two different trends, though they feed into each other. The maker movement is more akin to a subculture that promotes a DIY spirit in electronics, 3D printing, and robotics. Companies that combine hardware and software innovation in new, interesting ways are both benefactors and sustainers of this spirit.

Which is why I am lumping them together here — for the movement to grow, enthusiasts need to see a progression from hobby to multi-million (or billion) dollar business.

念の為に断っておくと、アジアにおけるメーカームーブメントとハードウェア-ソフトウェア企業の盛り上がりはお互いに力を与え合っているが別々の動向だ。メーカームーブメントは、エレクトロニクス、3D印刷、ロボット工学の分野のDIY精神を推進するサブカルチャーにより近い。ハードウェアとソフトウェアのイノベーションを新たな興味深い方法で結びつける企業はこの精神を支援し支えている。

このためここでは両者をひとまとめにして取り上げている。メーカームーブメントが成長するためには趣味が数百万（あるいは何十億）ドル規模の事業に発展する必要がある。

DFRobot: Besides making 3D printers, it operates an online store selling all sorts of open hardware parts.
Makible: Hong Kong company selling 3D printers from USD 200.
Pirate3D: Singapore-based 3D printer maker which raised USD 1.43M on Kickstarter, 14 times its initial goal.
Portabee: Cheap 3D printer based on open-source design RepRap Wallace. Based in Singapore.

Sassor: Japanese company that allows small offices and restaurants to manage their electricity consumption easily.
RedBearLab: Makes Bluetooth Low Energy boards that are Arduino-compatible. Based in Hong Kong.
Robugtix: Hong Kong company selling bio-inspired spider robots.
HEX Air Robot: A company from China that’s creating an open source platform for aerial personal drones.
Codlo: Malaysian startup that transforms rice cookers into sous vide machines. Past the halfway mark in its USD 148K Kickstarter campaign.

HackJam: A weekly meetup of hackers, artists, techies for the purpose of hacking interesting stuff. Held in Hong Kong.
Mini Maker Faires in Singapore, Taiwan, Seoul, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Shenzhen.

For now, the search engine is unable to account for a range of user behavior. Perhaps having toggles that allow for ‘discovery’ searches versus ‘specific’ searches might help. Having the ability to prioritize or filter results by color, texture, make, and even gender might be useful too.

Anyway, with further user feedback in the coming days, we should see the technology improve. For all we know, users might not really care about relevancy at all.

But in the meantime, Rakuten or VizSense might want to consider creating a guide to teach shoppers how to circumvent the tech’s limitations.

今のところこの検索エンジンはユーザー行動に関しては把握することができていな。
おそらく「発見するための」検索と「具体的な」検索を切り替える機能をつけるといいのかもしれな。また、色、テクスチャー、メーカー、さらには性別などで優先順位をつけたりフィルターをかけたりする機能も役に立つだろう。

とにかく、ユーザーから寄せられるフィードバックにより技術は改善されることになるだろう。ことによるとユーザーは関連性などはまったく気にしないかもしれないが。

しかし当面の対策として、Rakuten あるいVizSenseは、この技術の限界を回避するためのユーザーガイドを作ることを考えた方がいいだろう。

It is maintaining cost competitiveness by relying on free or subsidized services through partnerships (payment gateway PayTM is one example), software automation, and hiring employees who are willing to be paid at below-corporate scales.

Since its founding in 2010 by Sourabh Sharma, Anoj Viswanathan, and Mayukh Choudary, Milaap has raised over USD 800K in loans impacting over 25,000 lives across 10 states in India. Needs include better school infrastructure, employment-linked, training for the youth, seed capital for small businesses, access to clean water & sanitation, and safe lighting for families.

The company claims that 100% of its loans are repayed, with an average loan period of 18 months. Part of its operating expenses is recouped by charging field partners about 6 percent of the interest rate on the loan amount recovered from borrowers.

It hopes to reach sustainability eventually by achieving scale and transacting larger loan volumes every month, and expand into one more country in Southeast Asia within a year.

Milaapによるとローンは100％返済されておりローン期間の平均は18ヶ月だという。運営費用の一部は、借り手より回収したローン金額の利息の約6％をフィールドパートナーから徴収することにより賄っている。

WeChat Announced 70 million Overseas Users, Will Open up to Third-party Developers

At today’s 2013 Tencent Partner Conference, Martin Lau, president of Tencent announced that overseas WeChat users had reached 70 million. The 50 million milestone was announced as recently as in the past May. Its overall user accounts surpassed 300 million in January 2013.

WeChat would open up to all third-party developers on Tencent’s existing open platform, helping them expand to overseas markets, Mr. Lau said today.

2013 Tencent Partner Conferenceで今日Tencentのプレジデントを務めるMartin Lau氏は、WeChatの海外ユーザー数が7000万人に達したと発表した。5月にマイルストーンとなる5000万人達成が発表されたばかりだ。全ユーザー数は2013年1月に3億人を突破している。

今日Lau 氏は、WeChatをTencentの既存のオープンプラットフォーム上のすべてのサードパーティデベロッパーに開放し、デベロッパーの海外市場展開を支援すると述べた。

Currently newly added users are mainly from Southeast Asia and Latin America. So far it has presence in Thailand, India, Indonesia, Philippines, Singapore, Mexico, etc. An office was also set up in the U.S.

The mobile voice messaging app was launched in mainland China in January 2011. The English version was released later in October and was renamed WeChat in mid-2012. Now it has had eighteen language versions and cover over 200 countries and regions.

現在のところ新規ユーザーの大半は東南アジアおよびラテンアメリカからのユーザーだ。これまでにタイ、インド、インドネシア、フィリッピン、シンガポール、メキシコなどに進出しており、米国にもオフィスを開設した。

It’s not only one of the fastest-growing mobile Internet services we see in China, but also one of the few Chinese Internet services successfully expanding to the markets outside China.

The WeChat team is reportedly working on a major update, 5.0 version which is believed to be a game changer in terms of mobile commerce and user interface. WeCha exec Zengming confirmed that the new version will support payments.

WeChatは中国で最も急速に成長しているモバイルインターネットサービスの1つであるだけではなく中国以外の市場への進出に成功した数少ないインターネットサービスでもある。

WeChatチームはメジャーアップデートとなるバージョン5.0の開発に取り組んでいると報じられている。新バージョンはモバイルコマースやユーザーインターフェース面で画期的なものになると考えられている。WeChat 幹部のZengming氏は新バージョンが決済機能をサポートすることを認めている。

The rise of smartphones with good cameras, combined with a surge of interest to document our lives and share those clips with others over better and faster networks, are all contributing to a boom in the market. And we see absolutely no signs of this stopping and slowing down anytime soon.

Red or Blue Ocean?

There is minimal doubt that video will be the next big thing, with heavyweights such as Facebook (through Instragram video), Twitter (through Vine) as well as Google (through YouTube) all fighting for a slice of the huge lucrative pie.

Social Voice App Bubbly Hits 30 Million Users

Singapore-headquartered Bubbly, commonly known as the “Twitter for voice,” has hit 30 million users. In addition to the 30 million users milestone, the company has rebranded itself as Bubbly (it was formerly called Bubble Motion) to give a more unified branding, look, and feel. Aptly, the latest version of Bubbly (v3.0) also launched today with a new design.

「Twitterの音声版」として一般に知られるシンガポール発のアプリBubblyのユーザーが3000万人に達した。3000万ユーザー達成というマイルストーンに加へ、ブランドとイメージを統一図るため社名がBubble Motion からBubblyへ変更された。また、デザインが新しくなった最新版Bubbly(v3.0)が今日リリースされた。

The highlight of the refreshed Bubbly app is perhaps its additional background filters which allow users to add an atmospheric soundtrack to their recorded voice. Some of the new background filters include ‘Coffee Shop,’ ‘Clubbing,’ and ‘Bombay,’ on top of the 12 it had in version 2.0. They’re just like Instagram’s picture filters but for voice.

最新版Bubblyの最大の目玉はバックグラウンドフィルターが追加されたことだろう。ユーザーは録音された音声に雰囲気のあるサウンドトラックを追加することができる。バージョン2.0の12のバックグラウンドフィルターに加え「コーヒーショップ」「クラビング」「ボンベイ」などが新たに加わった。これらのフィルターはInstagramの画像フィルターの音声版のようなものだ。

Bubbly is used by celebrities including footballer Rio Ferdinand, cute Japanese girl band AKB48, and Bollywood star Salman Kahn, which is one of the reasons why many folks are attracted to the service. Bubbly is available not only on iOS and Android but also on feature phones, where I believe it gets most of its users. We have reached out to Bubbly to confirm this and will update if we hear back.

Bubbly CEO Thomas Clayton said in a statement that Bubbly is bridging global gaps “by allowing users from both smartphones and feature phones to post voice messages, like, and comment on each other’s posts.” So much so that it even helped an unknown 20-year old student in the Philippines who is only armed with a Nokia C3000+ and a regular headset to become a surprise viral hit, racking up over 200,000 followers on Bubbly.

“There are a lot of exciting changes going on for Bubbly right now as we continue to expand into new markets,” said Thomas. And that seems to suggest that things might just get busier for Bubbly, which recently added David Sloan as head of app products, former Rocket Internet Asia CTO Matteo Pelati as head of platform engineering, and former Fusion Garage CTO Andrew Alcock as head of apps engineering.
