Hyatt briefly demoed an area where a crew member could come in handy on the El Dorado map. The primary puzzle in this area involved pushing blocks onto switches in the correct order to raise a platform up to a dais containing a jewel piece. Alone, Hyatt’s character would’ve had to push blocks and determine the sequence through trial and error (which burns through his energy gauge). With a friend recruited, he could have the friend stand on switches to work through the sequence (burning through the “guest energy instead).

The thing to point out though is that DeNA has the ability to spend capital in a way that a venture-backed company like PapayaMobile, which recently closed an $18 million round, does not. DeNA is trying to grow outside of the saturated Japanese market and has pledged to investors that it will become the biggest mobile social gaming platform in the world. With its high-rolling Japanese consumer base (which produces an ARPU of $12.06 on Mobage), the company had 50.9 billion yen ($665 million) in cash and cash equivalents on its balance sheet at the end of the last quarter.

Angry Birds hits 350M downloads, more films and media coming 9/12


Gamers have downloaded game developer Rovio’s Angry Birds, a popular iPhone slingshot-style game franchise, more than 350 million times, the company’s general manager Andrew Stalbow said today.

Mobile device users play the game for more than 300 million minutes each day collectively, Stalbow said. But on top of being a popular game, it’s also becoming a massive entertainment franchise that spans multiple media forms. The company’s short films on YouTube, for example, have picked up more than 170 million views.
