Interim Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril said Monday that NTC control of Sirte would ensure that all of the country's sea, land and air entry ports are secure. He acknowledged that fighting will continue in a number of pro-Gadhafi pockets deep in the southern desert, including Bani Walid.

Jibril and NTC head Mustafa Abdel Jalil already had pledged to take no further part in the country's future government, as required by the country's interim constitution. The pledge was intended to reassure the public it will not suffer under another dictatorship.

Libyans poured out of Sirte Tuesday, after three weeks of brutal shelling and gunbattles finally forced them to flee through hostile interim government checkpoints.

Cars piled high with possessions and carrying terrified, hungry families crawled out of the strategic coastal city to have their belongings searched and identities checked by suspicious National Transitional Council forces.

NTC fighters eased their shelling of the town Tuesday, allowing residents to escape. Neither the fleeing Sirte families nor the revolutionary fighters searching them hid their mutual distrust, although most civilians said they were well treated and some were given food and water.

U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta says the NATO mission in Libya is an example of why the alliance matters, and shows that it can mount an effective campaign with Europe playing a lead role.

His comments came Wednesday in Brussels, where NATO defense ministers are gathering to discuss the situation in Libya and other operations.

Panetta said Tuesday the NATO air campaign over Libya cannot end and the political process cannot begin until former leader Moammar Gadhafi's hometown of Sirte and other areas are taken. He said not knowing Mr. Gadhafi's whereabouts also makes it difficult for the alliance to decide when to end its air operation and allow the interim government to move on to other issues.

アメリカ国防長官のレオン・パネッタは、NATOのリビアでの任務は同盟の大切さを表す例であり、主導的役割を果たしながらヨーロッパと協力して効果的な軍事作戦を行っていくけることを示していると述べている。

China’s Top 20 Daily Deals Sites – and Who Has the Hottest Deals?

In updated stats from group buy deal aggregator DaTaoTuan which go right up to the end of August, we get a new snapshot of China’s frantic and fragmented daily deals segment. Last time we checked, earlier this summer, we saw Tencent’s QQ Tuan was the king in terms of both market share and revenue.

This time round we see the top 20 deal sites in the country, and also get a good sense of who’s creating – and selling – the most successful packages. Note that DaTaoTuan didn’t scrape revenue figures this time.

Sunbridge Invests In Japanese Start-ups Wondershake and Midokura

Sunbridge, a Tokyo- and Sunnyvale-based tech incubator/VC firm founded by Oracle Japan’s former president Allen Miner, unveiled on Friday that it has invested in two Japanese start-ups, Wondershake and Midokura. The firm has not disclosed exactly how much it has invested, but some news media including CNET Japan report it was several million yen for each.

オラクルジャパンの元社長のアレン・マイナーが設立した、東京とサニーベイルに拠点を持つ技術育成者／ベンチャーキャピタル会社のサンブリッジが金曜、日本のスタートアップのワンダーシェイクとミドクラに投資したと発表した。同社はいくら投資したのかははっきりとは開示しなかったが、CNETジャパンなどの幾つかのニュースメディアによると、それぞれのしゃに各数百万円を投資したとのことだ。

Wondershake won the grand prix at TechCrunch Japan’s start-up pitch event in April, where Allen Miner served as the chair of judges. The start-up raised funds from Cyber Agent Ventures on the same day. Now the Wondershake team has moved to San Francisco and are working on registration as a US company.

Sunbridege will invest in a form of convertible notes to avoid increasing the valuation with the investment, and make it easier for the start-up to get additional fundraising from potential US investors in the future. (Refer to our previous article for more on Wondershake)

Meanwhile, Midokura is a cloud enabling tech company and funraised 100 million yen in its seed round from some VC firms including NTT Investment Partners and datacenter company Bit Isle.

The company was co-founded by the former COO of Globis, a private MBA schooling company in Tokyo. Japanese legendary techpreneur Kiyoshi Nishikawa (the founder of NetAge) is also involved in the board of directors. During the past few months we’ve heard from some of the company’s team that they are developing the alpha version of some cloud-related apps, but no further details are available at this point. We’ll keep you posted if we hear anything.


Update: Wondershake just announced the total amount of this fundraising from several investors including Sunbridge was 360,000 US dollars. (Their announcement, in Japanese)
