In fact the company was built on an ethos of thrift. And, whenever employees appeared to lose sight of this ethos and were felt to be taking advantage of the company's generosity, the culture would reassert itself. Employees would be exhorted to shake off complacency: the company's success, they were reminded, had to be earned 'one day at a time'. Eating 'weenies instead of shrimp' was the path to continued success they were reminded.
