The marketing of Microsoft products, including the frequent upgrades that make earlier versions of software obsolete, ruffled a lot of feathers inside the US Government. These and other concerns, including a series of complaints from rivals in the computer industry, aroused the interest of the Federal antitrust authorities, which investigated Microsoft for alleged anti-competitive practices - as did the European Commission of the European Union - in what seemed an endless round of rulings, counterclaims, fines and settlements.
