Trees that live near salmon streams grow 3x faster than normal trees in the area.
And it isn’t because of the extra water.
Every year, when millions of salmon migrate back from the ocean and into streams, back to their original spawning pool, they bring with them their own fat bodies, that are full of nutrients they’ve hoarded while at sea.
As they go up the streams, to their original grounds, they are picked off by numerous predators, particularly bears, who often take their kill up into trees to eat.
The remaining carcass is often left on the ground near the tree. And other remains often pass through the bear at nearby trees, still containing lots of nutrients.

鮭が川を上り以前の生息地へ行くにつれ、数多くの天敵に狙われる。特に熊は鮭をつかまえ、食べるために死んだ鮭を木のところへ運ぶ。
食べ残りの鮭の体は木の近くに残される。そしてその他の残りは木の近くの熊にフンとして残されるのだが、それには豊富な栄養が含まれる。

Their bodies are then broken down by fungi, which turn salmon into a more liquidated form that can be sucked up by the tree roots.
Ever notice how most grass/tree fertilizer has a lot of nitrogen in it? That’s because nitrogen is what allows plants to convert light into energy.
Salmon is packed with nitrogen. Every dead salmon that is rotting on the ground in that forest is like a vitamin for the surrounding trees.
The availability of nitrogen is often what places the upper limit on how a forest will grow.
This is part of the reason that Alaska has such an abundance of large trees near these streams.
Nothing in this circle of life goes to waste.
