5 reasons to pay attention to Vietnam’s startup scene
In a build up to Echelon’s Top 100 Startups, we take a closer look at the 14 countries where the regional qualifiers will be held. First up: Vietnam
Tourists flock to Vietnam for its breathtaking natural landscapes and prized World Heritage Sites; these days investors value the country for housing exciting, burgeoning communities of startups and consumers.
This March, e27 is headed to Vietnam in search for Asia Pacific’s Top 100 Startups, eager to hear the qualifying pitches from these companies. On this road to the Echelon Asia Summit 2015, here are five reasons why Vietnam is on the startup map.

今年3月、e27はAsia Pacific’s Top 100スタートアップについて調査するためベトナムへ向かう予定だ。優れたスタートアップ企業のいくつかから話を聞きたいと考えている。今回のEchelon Asia Summit 2015に向けて、スタートアップの勢力図にベトナムが載っている5つの理由を次に述べる。
Echelonの「トップ100スタートアップ」を選出するにあたり、地区予選を行う14の国について詳しく見ていくことにする。まず最初はベトナムだ。
旅行者は息をのむような自然景観や世界遺産を求めてベトナムに集まる。一方、投資家はこのところ、活性化する住宅市場や急成長するスタートアップと消費者のコミュニティがあるという理由で、この国に価値を見いだしている。
この3月、e27は「アジア太平洋地域トップ100のスタートアップ」を探し求めてベトナムに向かい、各企業による予選のピッチを聞く予定だ。来るEchelon Asia Summit 2015に向けて、ベトナムがスタートアップの世界において重要である5つの理由をここに挙げる。
1. Rising affluence and prosperity: Since the introduction of ‘doi moi’, a policy of economic reforms for market-driven liberalisation in 1986, Vietnam has rarely looked back. With a GDP growth rate of 5.3 per cent in 2013, it is the third-fastest growing country in ASEAN (behind Laos and Burma). When Vietnam joined the World Trade Organisation in 2007, its commitment to trade and capital flows only strengthened. In other words, there is now a bigger consumer market of opportunities which startups can tap into.
1986年に、市場牽引型の自由化を目的とした経済再生政策の「doi moi」が導入されて以来、ベトナムが過去を振り返ることはほとんどなかった。2013年の同国のGDP成長率は5.3%であり、ASEAN諸国の中で第三位の成長率の高さを誇る（ラオスとビルマに続く）。ベトナムは2007年に世界貿易機構に参加し、それにより同国の貿易と資本流入に対する傾倒は強まるばかりであった。言い換えれば、現在はより大きな消費者市場が存在するため、スタートアップが進出できる機会も増大していると言えよう。
Investors matter too. In 2013, The Wall Street Journal cited Hanoi-based startup incubator Topica that said “only Singapore has a better record [than Vietnam] of tech entrepreneurs starting companies and then successfully selling stakes to outside investors”. It was also a boost that the population of ultra-high net worth individuals in Vietnam increased by 14.7 per cent in the same year.
2. Greater ease of doing business: The Vietnamese government has sought to streamline administrative processes and reduce taxation rates so as to make it easier for small businesses to thrive. On World Bank’s ‘Doing Business Index’, which determines if a regulatory environment is conducive to the starting and operation of a local firm, the country rose from 99th in 2013 to 72nd in 2014 (out of 189 economies).
3. Wider Internet and mobile connectivity: With a population of 92 million, there are 42 million Internet users (penetration rate of 45.6 per cent), 25 million active Facebook users (27.2 per cent), and 134 million active mobile subscribers (145.7 per cent) in Vietnam. These oft-cited statistics point to the proliferation of mobile users and networked communication, and are consequently favourable for startups plugged into the Internet of Things. With the simultaneous growth in the number of smartphone users, as well as data subscription plans, companies have also rushed into the mobile game and app markets.
4. A robust community of startups: Beyond the promise for e-commerce, small and medium enterprises (SMEs) have become more ubiquitous. These enterprises – including startups – account for over 90 per cent of the Vietnamese economy. When the government launched a fund in 2013 to assist with the development of SMEs, it was projected that the number of new companies would reach 350,000 by the end of this year. These trends point not only to greater institutional support, but a more diverse landscape for startups to expand their operations, as well as network.

5. Echelon footprints in Vietnam: Having organised the Echelon Vietnam Satellite in 2013 – which hosted 120 participants and eight startups that pitched to a panel of judges – this will not be e27’s first visit to the country. At the satellite, Vietnamese developer Not A Basement Studio emerged as the most promising startup. Later in the same year, the Echelon alumni launched its new iPad app KeepShot, which helps users manage photobooks.
