Singapore's fin-tech startup Call Levels is raising US$500K

The startup expects to close the bridge round in the coming weeks. It has earlier raised US$140K from industry veteran Timothy Teo and private hedge fund managers

Singapore-based real-time financial monitoring app Call Levels is raising a US$500,000 bridge round to spur growth, e27 has learned. The round, which is still open but partially committed, is expected to close in the coming weeks.

Call Levels has previously raised US$140,000 in angel funding since its launch in October last year, led by angel investor and former JP Morgan executive Timothy Teo. The remaining funds came from private undisclosed hedge fund managers.

Backed by industry heavyweights

“We’re creating something that even New York’s biggest hedge fund manager would want to use, and think is comparable to professional systems — but is easier,” Cynthia Siantar, Co-founder of Call Levels, said in an interview.

Siantar was previously a Hong Kong-based equity capital markets associate with HSBC for nearly three years, and also a Singapore investment analyst with Mercer Investment Consulting.

Her co-founder, Daniel Chia, has roughly seven years experience as a Vice President at Ortus Capital Management, and prior to that as an Investment Manager at the Government of Singapore Investment Corp.

Put simply, Call Levels provides real-time financial monitoring and notification service on the cloud, covering more than 5,000 assets including US equities, Forex, Futures — and now Bitcoin.

Users can set a call level — an industry term that means “call me when the price hits a certain level” — and be notified instantly through a mobile notification. A premium automated phone calling service is planned to be rolled out soon.

Partnering with a Bloomberg service provider

The startup has partnered with itBit, a global bitcoin exchange and the first of its kind to be fully regulated under the New York banking laws, which inked a deal to provide Bloomberg’s 300,000 terminals globally with real-time Bitcoin monitoring.

“When the Swiss Franc crashed, we informed our professional users faster than any other system out there,” Chia said. The crash, which came in the middle, caught many traders off-guard.

Although neither company has officially shared numbers, both Didi Kuaidi and Uber are probably losing money in China. Uber is apparently losing money globally, and its high subsidies in China likely make the country an area of significant loss. Similarly, Didi is spending hundreds of millions on promotion alone and giving away free rides – I would be surprised if the company was turning a profit.

In principle, there’s really nothing wrong with that. Operating at a loss during expansion in order to secure a bigger slice of the market is an approach that many highly successful tech startups have adopted over the years. But the sums being spent in China’s ridesharing app market are so massive now that one wonders how long this kind of battle can really be sustainable. Neither company will want to lower its discounts and subsidies and chase profits until it has secured a significant hold on the market and the Chinese government has giving ridesharing apps a regulatory pass.

But there’s no way of knowing when, if ever, the latter could happen. If it takes China five years to legalize the Uber model, can either company afford to keep pouring billions into the market that entire time?

When you do come, it will be of course much easier if you are part of a community such as 500 Startups, which has a thriving Taiwanese founder community, but others have found it productive to attend local meetups or hackathons to meet motivated and skilled developers. One of the newest initiatives looking to bridge precisely this gap is Taiwan Startup Stadium, a startup service provider with ample space and programming to help Taiwanese startups to expand globally and for global startups to come to Taiwan.

Looking forward

Overall, I’ve seen some pretty compelling success stories on the software development side of companies hiring key technical talent in Taiwan while serving other markets. Certainly, large foreign companies are starting to take notice. Mozilla and Cheetah Mobile, amongst others, have come to Taiwan to build engineering offices, and they are definitely exerting upward pressure on developer salaries.

Anecdotally, it feels that for hardware companies the fit is likely to be even better, and we have seen at least one portfolio company, the Japanese startup Whill take advantage of the wealth of knowledge in that sector on the island. The boom in startup activity worldwide has also left its mark on Taiwan and things are changing fast. But what about Taiwan versus neighboring mainland China? Aside from the fact that China is no longer particularly cheap (according to recent statistics, about half at the junior level are quickly ramping up to be on par with Silicon Valley levels at a dozen years or so of experience), it is also very competitive, whereas Taiwan’s job market is significantly less overheated. Although I do not have detailed data on turnover rates, it certainly feels that anecdotally, my founders managing teams in Taiwan worry far less about the stability of their teams than those operating primarily in mainland China.

PulsePoint claims its optimization on sites and apps gets three times as much time-on-page by users than the standard length of time. One of the company’s clients, TaylorMade Golf, said in a statement accompanying the announcement that it has seen a 95 percent increase in video views since it began a campaign with PulsePoint.

There are no stats yet about whether this increased engagement results in any, you know, increased sales.
