As Aetna reported a 4% rise in first-quarter net income, the U.S. health care insurer said it plans to buy what it's calling the largest independent third-party administrator of self-funded health plans in the United States.
Aetna said it would acquire Prodigy Health Group from its majority owner, One Equity Partners, for about $600 million. Prodigy operates in 15 states and has about 600,000 medical members.

The acquisition "extends Aetna's reach into the third-party administrator business while providing a separate option under the Prodigy brands that addresses affordability and quality for middle-sized and small businesses and customers who are primarily price-focused."
