ブラウンは直線目盛り機を用いて、当時としては全く信じられないような０．００１インチロ盛りのスケールやノギスの生産を始めた。１８５１年のことである。ノギスのアイデアはすでに欧州にあったともいわれるが、加工できる機械がないために実用化には至らなかった。
ブラウンは高精度ノギスの実現に非常な誇りを持っていた。精密測定器の革命といわれ、機械工業製品の精度向上、「互換式生産方式」の発達に大きく貢献した。しかし最初の年にはわずか四台しか売れるなかったという。
不具合を検出する方法のポイント
Brown started to produce a scale that can measure every 0.001 inch and a vernier micrometer, which are unbelievable things those days, in 1851. It's said that the idea of a vernier micrometer had already been in Europe but they didn't put it to practical use because they didn't have a machine to manufacture it.
Brown was proud that he had achieved production of very accurate vernier micrometer. That was called a revolution of precise measurement and it also made a great contribution to improvement of the machine industry in precision and development of the interchanging production. However, in the first year, only four of them were sold.
