Although PriceArea is another startup doing pretty much the same thing, Telunjuk can add greater competition in this sector. Telunjuk is the second startup under the guidance of Project Eden to have officially launched, after the SpotDokter launch a few weeks ago. This is a great sign that Project Eden is now getting up to speed after months without any real activity. Project Eden is also planning to open its co-working space to the public so it can be a creative hub among the nation’s startup founders.

Are Pinterest Clones the New Groupon Clones in China?

What a difference a year makes! A year ago, inspired by the success of Groupon in the US, group buy clones were spreading across the Chinese internet like wildfire. At the peak of the madness, China had over 5,000 different group buy sites. These days, though, the verdant green fields of internet through which little group buy clones once scampered are now littered with their bones.

But those fields are still verdant and green, and it looks like a new kind of clone may be rising to enjoy its time in the sun before its inevitable over-saturation and self-destruction: Pinterest clones. For those not in the know, Pinterest is a social pinboard site, where people can share and organize photos. In the past two months we’ve written about Chinese net giants like Renren, Qihoo, and Tencent launching Pinterest clones, but they’re not alone. In fact, there are already more than thirty Pinterest clones afoot. There’s Duitang and Zhimei and Mishang and MarkPic and Pinfun and Budou and iCaitu and…OK, I’ll stop. You get the picture. (See what I did there?)

Now, by Pinterest “clone,” I really just mean that these sites took the concept of Pinterest, not necessarily the design or every little feature. I am sure they are all unique and beautiful snowflakes. However, they’re going to melt like a snowball in a microwave if they keep multiplying. The Chinese market can probably support thirty Pinterest clones for a little while, but how many of these are there going to be by next month?

On the one hand, the fact that it’s logistically easier to start this sort of social media site — you don’t need local teams in every city across the country — means that Pinterest clones may actually spread faster than group buy sites did. On the other hand, that ease will keep costs and team sizes down, so at least when the culling of these clones comes to pass, we probably won’t see as many news stories about huge layoffs and branch closing. Hooray?

Aside from that, QQBrowser for Mac is really simple, and looks like Safari, mainly due to having its tabs below the URL bar, which now feels like a step backward having gotten used to them being on top (which is one of many reasons I use Firefox on my Mac, not Apple’s Safari). Tencent has been leading the way among Chinese web companies by its bringing some of its core apps to the Mac. In addition to its ubiquitous QQ IM app – which we looked at last summer after it got video chat support – there’s also the QQ IME. Yes, that’s only two, but it’s two more than Baidu and most others.

QQ for Mac is a 38 MB download from its new homepage – but comes to nearly 100 MB once installed – and works only on OS X 10.6 and 10.7.

How InMobi’s Smartpay and Opera Mini Will Enable Online Payments for Featurephones

The Indian online ad and payments platform InMobi has announced that it’s teaming up with Opera, makers of the popular Opera Mini mobile browser, to enable online payments for digital goods for featurephone users across the globe.

With so many users of these relatively simple phones being in Asia – especially in India and Indonesia where they’re the primary method of getting online – this expansion of InMobi’s SmartPay mobile payment platform seems especially significant for Asia. To get a sense of what it entails, we talked to Sally Wuu, the head of marketing in Southeast Asia for InMobi, who explained that the aim is for “Opera users to conduct mobile commerce seamlessly” without a need for a smartphone, credit card, or other platforms such as Paypal. Indeed, those are all things that many folks in emerging markets are lacking.

The problem in online payments in emerging markets is essentially solved in this partnership by “user identification on the browser” – that is, the Opera Mini browser is now primed to work with InMobi’s online partners, and those sites and app publishers in turn will trust the Norweigan-made web browser. And so the partnership also gives InMobi’s platform partners access to the 160 million users of the Mini browser around the world.

Currently, InMobi Smartpay accepts only carrier billing, but it will expand in due course to accept, says Inmobi’s Sally, “banks, credit cards, PayPal, and peer-to-peer payment services.” It can be used in India, Indonesia, Malaysia, and 27 other nations around the world. It launched in May 2011.

Other payment options for consumers in the region include Singapore’s Movend, which now accepts MOLPoints, Paypal, Cherry Credits, and China’s Alipay.
